No, this is not sponge cake in a trifle, this is the art of making one area of a photograph retain it’s original colour whilst the rest is desaturated (converted to greyscale). If that all sounds like gobblygook, it did to me at first. Now it just rolls off the tongue. / And I only taught myself this technique this afternoon (10th Oct 2007) Here are a few images I’ve created so far: They the correct dimensions for printing as a card, laminated or framed image, because I know you’ll want to purchase them ...right?

I am doing a presentation for postgraduate management students on the topic of worklife balance. I wanted to use the above photograph in the context of childhood and the slow development into adult responsibilities that factor into why resilience and establishment of values are important. When I asked the photographer if I could use it in my presentation he generously allowed me to do so. I love the red bubble website because it is so positive, especially the feedback, and it allows voyeurs like me who enjoy photography so much visual pleasure. The Little Princess picture conveys so much life and emotion. My instant response was one of peace and happiness. I appreciated what Antonine was able to convey in just one shot . I will keep looking for his pictures as they appear on red bubble. I will also acknowledge in my presentation the source of Antoine’s picture and those of other photographers who also gave me permission to use their photo. Hopefully, this will lead to more interest, sharing of photographs and some sales for those who contribute.

I want you to know that what I appreciate most about your work, is that you open my eyes to the wonders of the world through your photos. I travel to the most far-off and beatiful places; into the hearts of flowers; I see the tiny lives of insects I didn’t know even existed. I become a traveller when I open Red Bubble. / Thank you all for letting me see the world through your eyes. And, please, take some time to describe. I love the history and nature lessons. Hi All, / Today i had some fun with my Camera Club, Pakenham Camera Club . The PCC organised a model shoot for it’s members. / A very special thanks to Roy for allowing the club to use his studio and home, and also for all of Roy’s amazing knowledge and advice! Pakenham Camera Club has a wide range of age groups and expertise amoung these age groups… some die hard film shooters and also the new digital shooters… The camera club caters for all alike and try and encourage all members to partake where possible, if you are near or far and looking for a great club with a bunch of great members… give us a try! Ok back to the images…....I have had a play with the processing to achieve a certain style and i pretty much had this in mind when i shot them, i wanted that film noir, dark and moody dorothy in the wizard of Oz feel to them… Not sure i have got there with what i intended but i am pretty happy with the results all the same! Here are a couple from today!

I’m sure you’ve all seen the article that RB posted earlier today (or maybe yesterday) about the site being featured on the Australian morning show 9AM With David & Kim. The video can be seen here I was lucky enough to be one of the artists who made an appearance during the story (albeit for about 2 seconds!). It was such a lovely surprise and honour – particularly because I’ve only just started using this site in the last week. So I’m writing this to say thank you to RB for featuring one of my photos and for all the groups who have also featured my work in the last week. And even more importantly, thank you to all of you who have been supporting my work already, with watches, faves and thoughtful comments. You’ve all given me a really wonderful welcome to the site, and your support means a great deal to me. What a fantastic resource and community this site is, it’s wonderful to be surrounded by like minded artists to share inspiration, ideas and encouragement. I really look forward to seeing more incredible work from you all! Thank you again for your support! Cheers, / Damienne Life Is In The Details III is the photo that was lucky enough to be featured by RB and 9AM.

  • Neutral Density Filters

I can’t talk about these filters in any sort of technical way, but I can explain what I bought, and how good they are at allowing you to shoot dawn and sunset without losing all your sky detail. I started off with a set of Cokin P filters. The filters sit in a plastic holder, that attaches to the front of your lens by way of an adaptor ring. The ring needs to fit the front element of your main landscape lens. When I used the Canon 20D the Cokin P was fine, with no vignetting, but once I bought the full frame Canon 5D, my lens had to be closed down to 24mm wide. This was unacceptable to me, since I like wide landscapes. Looking into various other filters meant spending quite a bit more money, however, all the reviews showed Lee filters to be ideal. There are a couple of companies here in Oz that sell them, and after wasting time ordering and paying in advance to an overseas company, only to find that they were out of stock, with no idea of a delivery date, I asked for a refund and contacted Mediavision in Sydney. Geoff was very helpful, and gave me a quote for a foundation kit, wide angle adaptor ring, a set of 3 neutral density soft graduated filters, and a full 0.6 ND filter. Postage was only slightly extra, and I had them in my hot little hands within the week. Geoff also sent a Lee catalogue. / Mediavision Australia / Sydney Office:- 4 Monash Road,Gladesville NSW 2111 / Phone:(02) 9816 4055 Fax: (02) 9816 1661 / Melbourne Office :- 22 Yertchuk Avenue,Ashwood Victoria 3147 / Phone:- (03) 9807 5133 Fax:- (03) 9807 7814 When I go to the beach, I take a bag with just filters and holder. They all have their soft cloth or soft vinyl bags, and it’s easier to slip them in and out of there without having to take off my backpack. Before dawn I’ll generally just have the adaptor ring and holder on the lens, with no filter. As the sun gets closer to jumping up from under the horizon, the filters are brought into play. Usually I’ll add the 0.6 first, if there’s not much cloud around, and once the sun has risen, the 0.9 will be added on top. The soft graduation means that you can slide the filter up and down, even slightly below the horizon, and it doesn’t leave a solid line. I haven’t been in a situation where I think I’d need the hard grad, to be honest. The holder turns easily if you wish to switch to portrait mode, just remember to turn it back when you go back to landscape mode! Because I live in Queensland where the sun is especially bright, all year round, it’s important to have these filters to make the most of a good sky. It’s near impossible to capture sky detail AND foreground detail without them. I don’t shoot in the daytime if I can get away with it, usually we pack up and leave the beach within 30mins after sunrise. I believe that you can still make good use of the ND grads all through the day, but I don’t have any real experience of that. Even shooting waterfalls can be easier when using ND filters, because it cuts out some of the light that might otherwise over-expose your image if you’re trying for silky water. The only problems we’ve all had is when the sea mist is particularly bad. In that instance we are constantly looking for ways to clean the filters, and still haven’t come up with a satisfactory solution. If anyone can help, we’d be much obliged! I hope this helps, as I said, not techy, but may be helpful for anyone looking to know what to buy….. cheers This has also been added to the tips and advice forum of All Seascapes Group forum

Along with many other Redbubblers, I am donating profits from sales of my work on Redbubble to the Victorian Red Cross Bushfires Appeal until 30th June to support those who have suffered in the Victorian fires here in Australia. ( Except my Cape York Photos – All proceeds will still go to the Cancer Council for The Great Australian Cancer Bush Walk www.thegreatcancerwalk.com.au ) If you have ever thought you’d like one of my images to hang on your wall, or as a card, or to use as a gift, now is the time – the proceeds could not go to a better cause. I will document any sales in a Journal entry at the end of June, and direct monies to The_Red_Cross_Victorian_Bushfires_Appeal Many families have lost their lives and whole towns have been burnt to the ground. It really puts things into perspective and gives us a huge reality check. Please pray for those dealing with the aftermath. The_Death_Toll_Could_Top_200 I have also donated several of my works to the Phoenix-Appeal – If you have time, please check out the fabulous artwork that is being donated by so many here on Redbubble! Having family and friends in Victoria, it has really brought home the impact of this tragedy! Stay Safe! Marilyn

  • SPOTLIGHT ON MARK MOSKVITCH (Sydney Australia) with my compliments
    by Alateia

MARK MOSKVITCH IN HDR / ”!http://images-2.redbubble.net/img/art/border:blackwithdetail/product:laminated-print/size:small/view:preview…

MARK MOSKVITCH IN HDR / / Einstein once said “Joy in looking and comprehending is nature’s most beautiful gift”. I think that the camera does the looking while the photographer does the comprehension of the image; a comprehension of their own feelings toward this matrix of light that they capture, and more importantly, a second-guessing of the comprehension brought to an image by the alternative viewer. In accepting the law of physics that says we do not see anything at all, just the light reflected from it, the photographer is given license to create reality to some extent. Reality as it is in the case of photojournalism, or reality as they would wish to portray it in the case of fine art photography. Thus much of my work is built upon the high dynamic range (HDR) technique of capturing light as it dances before my lens. A technique purported to provide an image more similar to that seen by the human eye as opposed to the lens. I am free then to experiment with the light colours and tones in a manner similar to a painter to create the reality I seek for an image, and a reality I think will have meaning to the viewer, mostly for reasons I will never know. Therein for me, is the magic of photography and my reason for doing it. / by Mark Moskvitch I would like to share my appreciation for Marks’ work with you / take a look through his collection and look at how his perspective brings a charge to otherwise everyday subjects. This coupled with the tones and moods he arrives at through his understanding of HDR is what impresses me most about Marks’ work. / Bravo Mark! / I for one wish you a bright future through your lense, keep it coming!

    PATCHWORK HISTORY / !http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/clothing/backgroundcolor:fafafa/bodycolor:brown/size:large/style:womens/view:prev…

PATCHWORK HISTORY / / Patchwork Elephant I have a real fascination for/with stitchery and after getting a whole dose of it through a good friend, my work started to take on more of that stitched and bound look… as you see about in Patchwork Elephant but i’ve had the fetish for as long as i can remember…probably because my mum is a super sewer and the sound of the sewing machine or watching her thread a needle are impressed deep in my psych Patchwork Quilting goes back many years. Examples of quilting have been found in tombs of Pharohs dating back to 3400BC. Joseph’s coat of many colors was probably patchwork. Even armour was made by quilting heavy fabrics together. Quilted bed covers were recorded in household inventories from the 17th century. Patchwork quilting has even evolved into an art form known as art quilts. The Amish have developed the quilting traditions of other immigrants into America, into their own style. / excerpt taken from Ezine articles Thank you to the buyer of this tshirt this morning, I really appreciate it… ..... + HISTORY KRAFT BROWN PAPER+ / / Smile Baby – Retro Tee This tee (Smile Baby) is great for photographers and camera lovers of all ages, began as a marker pen drawing on a huge piece of Kraft Brown Paper torn from a large role I’d purchased for the purpose of wrapping and sending original artworks through the post (after they’d been appropriately packaged in bubblewrap then cardboard, but i found that i had excess brown paper, and one day, while waiting for my computer to wake up, got bored, grabbed the paper and started experimenting. I played around with the paint drips and making butterflies and crowns and dresses by folding the paper in half…..but eventually just started drawing quite quickly without much though, and began a whole range of new characters all drawn onto brown paper, I made them into a couple of calendars, and they are all available here on redbubble in card/print/calendar or many of them as tshirts also. Thank you to the buyer of Smile Baby – Retro Tee your purchase is greatly appreciated by the artist Here’s the Brown Paper Creations 2010 Calendar and you can see where the brown paper is left to show through, i’ve also used white gesso in large brush strokes across their faces and bodies and a combo of pastels and ink to achieve the outcome Here’s the Children of the World brown paper girl calendar for 2010 – all the images on the back are available separately also / Kraft paper is paper produced by the kraft process from wood pulp. It is strong and relatively coarse. Kraft paper is usually a brown colour but can be bleached to produce white paper. It is used for paper grocery bags, multiwall sacks, envelopes and other packaging / excerpt from* Wiki / The kraft process was developed by Carl F. Dahl in 1879, and a pulp mill using this technology started (in Sweden) in 1890.[2] The invention of the recovery boiler by G.H. Tomlinson in the early 1930s, was a milestone in the advancement of the kraft process.[3] It enabled the recovery and reuse of the inorganic pulping chemicals such that a kraft mill is a nearly closed-cycle with respect to inorganic chemicals, apart from those used in the bleaching process. For this reason, in the 1940s, the kraft process surpassed the sulfite process as the dominant method for producing wood pulp.[2] / excerpt from Wiki Last, but not least, here’s the Love is a Big Hug 2010 calendar, which has a selection of brown paper creations with a mix of other sweet loving artworks for girls of all ages
