  • A self portrait taken for the Canon Photo5 Competition using the ribbon as the object required in the photo.

  • I’ve just uploaded my bubble entry into the Cannon Photo5 competition.

  • This is my entry into the Canon Photo5 comp for the tealight candle…a bit silly, but it was all I could come up with!

  • My final version of an entry for the Canon Photo5 Competition. An accidental breakage of our little teapot gave this fascinating and symbolic object to work with. By using a textured base and putting the tealight under the remains of the teapot I have created this moody and evocative image. I shot a 20 second (not 1) exposure using a tripod and cable release. To get the smokey effect I spilt wax onto a black piece of plastic and photographed it, then lightly layered it over the image in Photoshop. • My 2008 Canon Photo 5 submission for the Cocktail Umbrella category. I put my camera on a tripod and then took a photo of the umbrella floating in the air. I then took a second photo of the same scene but without the umbrella. I added water into the second photo using a watering can to make it look like it was raining. I then took the macro shot of the fly. I merged elements of the three images together to create the final image.

  • My 2008 Canon Photo 5 submission for the crayon category. I took a colour photo of the purple crayon pressed up against the flowers and then imported it into Photoshop. I then duplicated the layer and converted the new top layer to black and white. I then used the eraser to reveal the old colour layer for the flower, hand and crayon. I used the replace colour tool on the flower to give the flower elements of the purple from the crayon to make it look as if the crayon had drawn on the flower.

  • My first entry for the 2008 Canon Photo5 Competition. / Four more to go!!! Description / I combined the supplied purple crayon with some purple Play-Doh to create a creature that appears to be rising from the same mould. Once the creature was complete, I lit it using two Canon 540EZ’s, triggered wirelessly by Cactus V2 radio triggers on either side. A bit of a clean-up and adjustment in Photoshop and here is the end result.

  • Another entry possibility for the Canon Photo5 competition. Suggest improvements. © Ben Herman 2008

  • This is my red ribbon entry into the Canon Photo5 comp. Phew…last one. Now, fingers crossed =-)

  • My second entry for the 2008 Canon Photo5 Competition. / Three more to go!!! Description / I drew a spooky scene on cardboard, cut it out and positioned it near a wall. The tealight was carefully positioned to the right of the camera ensuring it’s glow was cast against the stencil without being in view of the frame. A sheet of orange cellophane was placed in front of the tealight to create an orange halloween-like effect. The image was cleaned up and enhanced in Photoshop and this is the end result.

  • For Canon Photo5 I tied the red ribbon to a ukulele and spun around in circles outside in the evening holding the camera in one hand and the ribbon in the other. I manually focussed the lens, set the flash to fire and used a slow shutter speed – 1/4 of a second to capture the image. Contrast was adjusted in Photoshop. I like how the instrument found its own rythm in the air as I spun, twisting during the exposure to create movement in the image. • My third entry for the 2008 Canon Photo5 Competition. / Two more to go!!! Description / With the lead up to Christmas I thought this idea would be fun. I spray painted a candy cane white and added some new stripes using the red ribbon, giving it a whole new meaning. Photographed on a wood background, extra textures where overlaid and the image was cleaned up and enhanced in Photoshop.

  • My tealight entry to Photo5 I really wanted the light from the tealight – it is so soft, so gentle. I used 3 skeletons clustered round the tealight – wanting the light of life but unable to attain it. Bored, they just sit. The tea light (in conjuction with a slow shutter and loooong lens gave me this warm but sad show.

  • Another Photo5 image that I decided not to use. But I still like it.

  • sorry, I couldn’t help it! :) / My poor excuse for a Canon Photo5 competition

  • Often my life feels like this – like a lively, bright red thread, flying through a vast, dirty and decaying world. Sometimes it zooms about as if on some frantic search, and other times it just floats wherever the wind carries it, but always there is the sense that I don’t belong. • My fifth and last entry for the 2008 Canon Photo5 Competition. / All done – at last!!! Description / I shot a series of bubbles which I later combined with another shot I took of a work mate. My aim was to represent our thoughts and how we sometimes can look into them too much. The elements were composited together in Photoshop, cleaned up and enhanced and this is the end result.

  • This is my entry in the bubble category for the canon photo 5 contest. I took the shot through the round hole in the side of my Foozball table. In the end I combined three shots with photo editing software to get the bubbles in a position I liked.

  • Canon Photo5 Competition entry. Subject is Tea Light candle. “I have used the tea light as an introductory piece in conjuction with some larger candles. The tealight has the reflection on the other candles in the form of subtle light and the larger candles are in turn lighting the way in for the tealight to be introduced to the image.” In this image I aimed to capture the soft and subtle feeling of candle and candle light.

  • This little pic is for the Paper Clip Challenge in the Canon Photo5 Group
