how cool. My mum wants to learn PS. It’s going to have to be mostly distance-so I may as well share the tips! One-the goal Know your goal / Make a plan / Stick to the plan / If the plan doesn’t achieve the goal, make a new plan / Achieve the goal. Two-the goal Natural or nurture? Portraits Let’s pick natural first. Why do we like natural? It’s easy to relate to, we feel close to it, we’re familiar, we feel comfortable. If an image is ‘natural’, we accept it. Anything unnatural stand out. We jump on it. When using PS, less is usually more. Like film photography- Aim to get the best results in camera. That means good light, good subject and good angles. Because; What you see is what you get. What you see through the lens is what you end up with. Exception: the camera’s eye is not as good as our own. Light-It sees less when it gets dark, flashes drown out backgrounds and artificial light is, surprise! artificial (either yellow or green usually). example of different light (see dif angles/light-walking around the subject (Lara) in sunlight Exception-Depth of Field (DOF) this how much of the foreground/background is in focus. For portraits, its best to have just the face in focus. The background is distracting, unless it adds info about the subject being photographed. With an automatic camera, it depends on how much light. More light will mean more in focus. As it gets darker, the camera might not focus on anything, or it may too close to the subject. In PS, to get rid of distracting background, blur it. There is a blur tool. Remembering, less is best-use it subtly, and logically. Heavy handed blurring can detract. I suggest 50% to begin with. go look at portraits on the net and find ones that use varying DOF. Notice there are very few tips on PS here! That’s because the same thing can be achieved using the camera first, so get familar with the goals first! Then go on to lesson 2

My first spin around the bubble on a purchasing spree and these are the cards that I choose to order first. I figured since I sold some stuff which I never imagined in my wildest dreams would ever happen, I wanted to order some of my favorite pieces of work on RedBubble. I hit on an idea for my cards that i have purchased from RB to keep them safe and clean until my room is decorated and I can display them on the walls. I thought I would pass it on to fellow bubblers. / I went to Wilkinsons and purchased a photo album for 99p and it holds 32 (5×7) images, various designs available. (Local have everything you can think of store in the UK) It is perfect for holding the cards that I have purchased from RB, it keeps them clean and safe and i am able to impress friends and family with all the wonderful work on RB. / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

Yesterday I wrote a journal about hoping to win a Canon 400D in a local comp in the newspaper. I entered 3 pics and 1 got published as a finalist (which is great) and the winners were published this morning. I didn’t win….which is fine, I wasn’t expecting to…....but when I was thinking that I assumed I’d be beaten by better pics!! Instead I was beaten by a cat with a remote control….LOL I’m going to winge now so if you are not into that sort of thing you’d better stop reading now….seeya Firstly, it was advertised as a summer photo comp – can’t quite figure out how 2nd and 3rd place exude summer Secondly when you check out the photostream its titles “Hunters Best Photographs”....How embarassing is that if they were the best….doesn’t say much about mine does it… OK I knew it was going to be one of those comps – most pics that got published had kids in them, a blow up pool and an animal….but whats with the cat and the remote control!!!!! OK…rant over.. Here are the other two pics I sent in: If you are curious about the winners you can see them on this Link Well, if you’re reading this bit, thanks for sticking around. I don’t usually winge like that….but I feel all the better for it. Can’t wait til next years comp….LOL

  • One Photo Per Day : 6th-25th September
    by berndt2

Part IX continues on from Part VIII...

Part IX continues on from Part VIII , I think this may be the first set of 20 or so shots that didn’t involve a photo taken outside England. Then again, it does feature Al Pacino, Jack Black and a building in the ‘Brutalist’ style. Actually, there’s far too many celeb shots in this lot… I think I need to schedule more holidays!) / September 6th. St Albans. And…. I have nothing to add. / September 7th. Canal on Maida Vale. Better photos were taken today, and even on my camera. But not by me, which is kind of a problem. Never mind, it was a good day anyway. / September 8th. This is Trellick Tower in London. Awesomeness part 1 : its architectural style: ‘Brutalism’. Awesomeness part 2 : the architects name : ‘Erno Goldfinger’. / September 9th. St Pancras Train Station, containing 2 Cafe Neros, two Paul’s, a Costas and a Starbucks… not to mention the world’s longest Champagne bar. I like to linger… / September 10th. Singer Katy Perry. She kissed a girl, and she liked it. (A snap poll of other guys around the office confirmed my high level of support for her perspective) / September 11th. Harrods, London. They don’t sell Effen Vodka, but they do have a Fossils department. An interesting trade-off… / September 12th. St Albans. It’s getting darker in the morning… / September 13th. Thames Cruise. It’s actually quite rare to see the lifting of theTower Bridge, although The Internet informs me that it’s done about 1000 times a year. Which seems to me to be the opposite of what I just wrote. / September 14th. Righteous Kill Premiere. Academy Award winner Al Pacino strays a bit too close to my 50mm lens. Nice detail – thanks Pentax! / September 15th. A Chairman Mao mural regards the ‘Americana Cosmetics’ store near Kings Cross. / September 16th. Jack Black, at the Tropic Thunder Premiere (He still owes me $5.) / September 17th. Pussycat Dolls just outside BBC1 Studios. The centre one is going out with F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, whereas I think rest are just generically famous. / September 18th. I’ve been wanting to take a shot from this perspective for a while. Pamela Anderson (yes, THE Pamele Anderson as opposed to a different one) arrives at the BBC1 studios / September 19th. ‘The Hope’ pub in Farringdon. Not much to add. I didn’t stop for a beer, but I did hope IT would get back to me on some issues I’d continued to have with network and printer access. As always, though, it was more about ‘the hope’ than ‘the delivery’. / September 20th. One of Many . Railing on a church fence – St Albans Abbey on a spectacularly sunny day. Now to find a pub that serves Frulli beer…. / September 21st. Apparently the Queen has to formally request permission to pass into London City, as signified by dragons placed around ‘the place’. (By ‘the Queen’, obviously they mean some meaningless minion) / September 22nd. An only partially successful attempt at a tilt-shift photo edit. I’m so totally 2006 right now… / September 23rd. (“what do you mean? Your apartment DOES have at least one window!!”) / September 24th. My decision to walk to work from Kings Cross rather than take the tube pays off with this photo. Very coolly coincident signage and building design. / September 25th. My decision to walk to Blackfriars from Waterloo after the trip back from Hook also pays off with this photo. Until next time!! Part VIII, Part VII, Part VI (and so on…)

  • Who's The New Oasis Mouth Model?
    by Carrie Glenn

Okay that would be me! I was asked and very reluctantly took the job for posing for some shots for a medical technology company named “Oasis”. No…I’m not putting a pregnancy test in my mouth although I kept laughing as I was being photographed because it sure looked like one. / Actually it’s a saliva collector! Really cool. It’s a new way of collecting saliva in the medical industry, quickly easily and safely. The shots are being used on a medical website. / Anyway…it’s kind of an odd thing for me as I do not model or anything but hey if random jobs come up that pay money, I’m in! ;D Just sharing my weird venture into the many projects I’ve been involved in lately. ...although it’s not the weirdest job lately….I actually had a request from a gentleman who tried some of my homeade beef strogonoff, that if I could make him a batch a month he would pay me. / Of course I’m going to cause that’s a great story to tell future kids…”at one point I was actually making stroganoff and modeling with pregnancy tests in my mouth!!”... ??? ;D “Will work for food….” apparently I “Will make food for food!” LOL! XOXO

  • 12/14/08 - Selected as one of the best photographers of 2008 is a true SCAM
    by Brendan Schoon

Yesterday I received an email from Photo Laureates concerning the fact that I was selected as one of the best photographers of 2008. Which sounds pretty good, but in matter of fact to good to be true! One of my redbubble friends, Claire Farley , (I really owe her something right now) googled Photo Laureates and came to an awful conclusion. Photo Laureates is a true SCAM. So be aware, don’t submit your work and make the same mistake as I did! Click here to see the proof of the SCAM! My email to Claire Dear Claire, Thank you so much for leaving that link about the fake challenge. I was really surprised about the win and lucky me I was so exited I didn’t read the email very good. I thought the book and the plaque were send to me without any payments and that other people could order the same book as well. I truly appreciate you googled Photo Laureates for me. I wasn’t aware of those SCAM challenges, it all sounded so good and the site looked pretty real. But after some good research on the site, you’ll find some unusual things as names and other stuff. Snoop Dogg is one our editors etc. I’m really blaming myself I didn’t noticed the SCAM. Also when I agreed with the terms of agreement I thought isn’t that a little bit short for a term of agreement? But the stupid me clicked the button and uploaded his picture. The only thing that I’m worried about now is they do have my original picture in full size. It has happened to me before that one of my pictures got stolen and used in a photography challenge. So I hope they won’t steal my pictures for that kind of use. I will try to find out how I can block this site for other people who just want to enter their work in a challenge for more experience and feedback. I think this, “fake company”, isn’t legal at all and I will try to find out how and if I can take any legal actions against them. Faking photography challenges and asking people to buy books, plaques and biographies which are not existing is a really bad thing. I will try to get my work off that site as quick as possible. Again I learned something on the Internet, don’t submit your work at any challenge without reading the terms of agreement and googling them up. Also challenges with free entries are suspicious when the winner’s prize is such a high number. Once again I would like to thank you for your kindness and helping me out and getting me out of that “to good to be true” dream. I think I’m not such a good photographer to deserve such a great title. Just 19 years old, at the beginning of my life and carrying such a title is no good! All the best, Brendan Fake Email Photo Laureates Dear Brendan, The editorial team of Photography Laureates has conducted a detailed examination of the best photographs submitted to us in the last months. We have decided to publish in an Anthology the very best photographers and the most exceptional pictures we have encountered. We would like to congratulate you for being selected for publication as part of our highly acclaimed Photography Anthology. As such, you are a finalist for the $6500 prize. As a Laureate and talented photographer, you now have access to several networking opportunities aimed at exposing you to the photography community. Your photograph was selected out of hundreds of competing entries and you will be published along with other talented photographers. Image is clickable / Your photograph, Banff National Park, Moraine Lake, was selected for its light mix and general composition and will be published in our acclaimed “Best Of 2008 Photography”, Deluxe, 8.5” X 11”, Hard bound, 300 pages Special Edition anthology. • IS THIS A PHOTO OF VAN GOGH?
    by BLYTHART

In my Writings I have an entry about copying from photographs...

In my Writings I have an entry about copying from photographs. An observant artist Redbubble friend of mine (I’ll leave the decision to her whether to go public) has drawn my attention to the fact that the photo may not be one of Van Gogh. With this in mind, I Googled “Van Gogh Photo” and this photo did not appear. I can’t remember which site I found it on, but it was a site about photographs being used by famous artists. Some of the photos in my article are from books, but this was definitely from the Internet. I’d love some feedback on this matter as I am left feeling undecided myself to be honest. I’d say the drawing is definitely taken from the photo (whoever the man is), so my point about artists using photos is still a valid one (which isn’t in dispute), BUT unless Van Gogh used artistic licence to alter the painting … One of my pet theories is that, as this portrait is shown elsewhere reversed, with his left ear apearing to be intact, it may very well be the case that he did a self-portrait using his usual method of copying from a mirror and thus showing his good ear as being his left one, whilst in reality it was only reversed by the mirror. The person who used the portrait to demonstrate that it was from a photo might have found a reversed version and been mistaken. Usually, a self-portraitist can get away with a mirror likeness, but not when they have mutilated ear :) Anyway, here is the photo, drawing and painting. What do you all think? Help me make my mind up please … decisions, decisions, decisions :)

  • One Photo Per Day April 16th - May 5th 2009

It’s been nearly two weeks as at now() since I last snapped a celebrity in London, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’ve been bored … all that time. Here’s the highlights for the past twenty days: / April 16th. Hugh Jackman outside BBC Radio 1. I was asked whether I screamed like a girl upon seeing him, and my answer was: I had my iPod on so I don’t know for sure, but I doubt it. I’m a guy, and as such appear immune to the Efrons and Jackmans to which I am exposed… (Therons and Kidmans are another matter..) / April 11th. Another weird mouth-shaped building in St Albans…. was removed from photo for the day in favour of ‘duck in front of trees and a bench’. (It was that kind of day… perhaps more so) / April 17th. Covent Garden tube station. I was all set for a nice excursion into the ‘Garden area, but when I got out it was raining just a bit too heavily and I didn’t have an umbrella. So… back onto the tube I went. / April 18th. The town of Cambridge is very pretty and known for its University/ies, the Kings College Chapel, and punting on the River Cam. But I couldn’t go past this shot of a tree-lined avenue leading to the place where we had a bit of a picnic until we were asked to leave. Bah – I’ve got a degree. Where’s the love? I call it The Dark and the Light and it edged out Not Talking To You for photo for the day. / April 19th. Door handle, St Albans. I removed the two bottom screws in editing for extra added effect. Yeah, I know. It doesn’t change the effect… it just enhances it. Otherwise, a pretty good, albeit nondescript day. / April 20th. At the Star Trek Premiere Chris Pike plays the young Captain Kirk in JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek. And while I think Zoe Saldana is prettier and JJ Abrams cooler, I kind of have to go with the shot of Kirk in foreground, Kirk in background, for photo for the day / April 21st. Russell Crowe exits his Range Rover and heads for some poses for the Paps and some quick interviews before settling down to a massively impressive autograph signing spree at the State of Play Premiere. Very commendable. And YOU were to scared to show up in case he went mental and started throwing things. Bah! / April 22nd. I know, painting with a torch, like tilt-shifting, is kind of the In Thing in photography for the Young Kidz these days. However, while I’ve seen people do quite complicated, nearly 3-D ‘paintings’ and scenes, I haven’t seen anyone tagging the side of a wall with a torch and taking a 30-second exposure of it. (I can’t believe I’ve finally got a tag!) / April 23rd. It’s St Georges Day! And it’s not a public holiday. Apparently, it’s because to organise a national holiday for Scotland AND Ireland AND England AND Wales would be too emotionally charged. Bah. Even if Matthew Broderick’s birthday was a public holiday, no matter how much I detest the guy I’d still want to have the day off… / April 24th. It’s Edinburgh, Scotland. This photo does not include the famous Edinburgh Castle, Botanic Gardens, Princes Street or the large monument I’m calling the ‘Sauron Monument’ because that’s what it reminded me of. / April 25th. Otter fights Eel on a rock on the Isle of Arran, Scotland. I had no end of beautiful scenery to choose from, from ferries to mountains to waterfalls to castles to 5000 year old burial mounds, a whiskey distillery and the town of Broddick just after a cleansing afternoon rain and thunderstorm. But for sheer rarity, I kind of have to go with this shot. / April 26th. We left Arran and rather than drive to Glasgow directly, we went via the small town of Arroway, outside Ayr. This is the Brig O’Doon (no, really. That’s it’s name) / April 27th. This building on the campus of the University of London stood in for the British Museum in the movie “The Mummy Returns”. Which is odd because the ACTUAL British Museum is, like, about three blocks away from this building. / April 28th. Giant hanging lantern outside a pub called ‘The Champion’. I assume the ornate wrought ironwork can support that kind of weight… / April 29th. Whenever I see a protest anywhere, I’m put in mind of someone who pointed out “if a million people signed a petition not to go to war in Iraq but the government went anyway, what’s the likelihood that a protest of (a smaller number) will make any difference whatsoever?”. It’s a sobering thought, but one it’s hard to fault the logic of. / April 30th. Hedwig House, St Albans. It’s a Harry Potter reference. In other news, generic brand Ibuprofen is keeping my massive toothache at bay until my dentist appointment next Tuesday. Its strength is adequate, but the four hour delay before it kicks in is probably explained by the fact that it sells for about 1/8 the price of the leading brand…. / May 1st. The studios of BBC Radios 1 and 2 and Leicester Square have provided more photos for the day than any other discrete location, so I felt it was nice to take a shot of one of them without celebs getting in the way. This is Leicester Square. / May 2nd. Part of the Rose Window (?) of St Albans Abbey, one of the few churches in England to date back to Roman times. There’s a Saint interred there, no less, and the acoustics (for when the choir is singing or practicing) are brilliant. / May 3rd. The Rothschild estate in Waddesdon. This is the back of the building (the front has a row of Bentleys and Rolls Royces lined up for you to peruse…. just so you can tell the difference). I’m not the most materialistic of people… but, damn…. I gotta vacuum my apartment. / May 4th. It’s a public holiday Monday, not that this meant I did anything spectacular. This is part of a series of houses on London Road, St Albans, with murals painted on doors and window frames. / May 5th. “I’m Sorry (for being negative)” says the Evening Standard advertisement at Liverpool Street Station. It’s a sobering sentiment when you’re on your way to the dentist. On the plus side, however….. the anaesthetic worked a little too well? Feel free to compare and contrast against the Previous One Photo Per Day So… that was twenty something reasonably decent days, photographically speaking! However, my complaint stands : I haven’t snapped a celeb for nearly two weeks and that’s just crazy. Seriously, right now I’d take a low-order Baroness or former Big Brother contestant! Until next time!

Gosh how time flies, its sort of like a Aussie Bush Telegraph with my Journal here at RB. I’ve been so busy working (like everyone else here) and so wish for more time to paint, shoot and enjoy more time here with this fabulous community of artists and photographers. I’d sincerely like to thank each and everyone who has me on their watchlist and your awesome feedback and comments on my work, also to those who accidentally stumble to my page and leave inspiring words and encouragement also, it really does mean so much to me. It really feeds my soul, would be the best way to put it!! LOL! My cards arrived. I found them waiting on the fence. Tinker was already having a good poke around at them. She reckons she looks a lot like the second one from the left…maybe if she turns her head a tad more…. / Okay, once I managed to get them from Tinkers clutches I sat them down at the table for a spot of lunch….while I was making the sandwhiches they had a game of cards…I really don’t trust the cowboy dude…he looks like he may cheat!!! / Turns out he was the dealer…so hmmmm…. / Once everycard had eaten they all sat around the camp fire telling stories. Trudi’s Image’s Follyfoot card remenised about the time she was a tree… / Dawn’s pony card couldn’t believe it when he saw one of his relatives on the fire!! Louise’s three horse heads just sat quietly just happy to be a card rather than a campfire. / Many thanks to First of was one of Trudi’s Images but I can’t seem to find the image now!! lol By a louisegreen / By dawndavies / and this one I drew when I was 7. I will be giving it to my mum for her birthday next week. I wonder if she’ll recognise it?? ha ha
