Erase the year.. / Again..I’m here. They told me to be a wall. / Told me to be lonely. I didn’t believe them. / So instead, I loved. Now.. / I am free..

There was a bit of experimentation going on in this one for me. Watercolor, charcoal, colored pencil, pencil, marker, ink, and a wonderful photo of my not so handsome face were used to pull this thing together. Quite surprisingly, I don’t hate it. I know, I know…me not hating something that I’ve done is no doubt the first sign of the coming apocalypse. I’m sorry that a pathetic self portrait by a nobody you’ve never met had to bring forth armageddon, but I guess that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Or I suppose the way the earth crumbles…as the case may be.
For some reason I always find myself drawn to the moon in my greatest times of adversity…. seeking solace in the Mother Goddess maybe….. perhaps some ritual remnant of pagan ancestors….. Either way, it soothes me. The ritual known as Drawing Down the Moon is the Wiccan/pagan ritual of drawing the spirit of the Goddess/moon into the practitioner to enable the Goddess to speak directly through this person. / It is a very sacred ritual amongst followers of this faith. Night of Museums, an inspiring manifestation that took place on a fine summer evening last year in Belgrade. One ticket opened the doors of many museums on that night. / I believe that many will recognize this photo. It is famous Che Guevara portrait made by Rene Burri. Obviously I was not the only one interested in this charismatic photo and luckily they even helped me to get more appealing composition :) / And again for the reference, FujiFilm FinePix F30 Zoom compact camera was used for capturing this photo.

There are various powers, you know what I am talking about, don’t you? You call them siddhis, don’t you? Do you know all these things are like candles – candlelight in the sun? When there is no sun, there is darkness, and then the light of the candle is very important; but when there is the sun, the light, the beauty, the clarity, then all these powers, these siddhis, are like candlelight. They have no value at all. And when you have the light, there is nothing else – developing various centres, the charkas, kundalinis, you know all that business. You need a sane, logical, reasoning mind, not a stupid mind. A mind that is dull can sit for centuries breathing, concentrating on various charkas, and you know all that playing with kundalinis, – it can never come upon that which is timeless, that which is real beauty, truth and love. So put aside the candlelight which all the gurus and the books offer you. And do not repeat a word that you yourself have not seen the truth of, which you yourself have not tested. (Krishnamurti – 4th public talk in Bombay, 1970)
It’s been so hot lately!!! I’m relatively new to portraits, especially self portraits, -close-ups in particular. In posting this image I’m attempting to find a deeper level of self acceptance by embracing what is. In this case, it is hot and this is me, imperfectly me, outside trying to catch a breeze. Many heartfelt thanks to those of you who have been so supportive & encouraging toward me and my artistic journey. / It means the world to me and my gratitude knows no end! September 2009.
