  • A Fabric Phenomenon
    by Sharon Hammond

    US$4.66–US$106.40

We’ve been wearing them since the 18th century. / Too skinny, too low, too high, too baggy, too worn, not worn enough, too blue, too black, too faded….too bedazzled. Oh, the K-Tel Bedazzler – the memories. / I LOVE denim Thank you to my neighbours for supplying some of the jeans. /

  • where's dinghy?
    by dinghysailor1

    US$3.99–US$91.20

There is a clue…. a possible rainbow thing around the shadow of my head…...can you see me yet….? I’m trying to hide my own shadow in that of the central tree, but my elbows are sticking out as i take the picture and there seems a trace of a rainbow around where my head is….. I think it might be something called a ‘brocken spectre’ (I’d just heard about this at my photography class – thanks mark!) One tentative explanation is that ‘a brocken spectre appears when a low sun is behind a climber who is looking downwards into mist….from a ridge or peak. Here is a cropped version of my next pic ‘dinghy’s here!’ as someone else (Waldo?Wally?...) was walking past… Both (unaltered) images were taken 1015am Jan 08 as we climbed out of town above the mist hanging over Peebles in scottish borders. If confirmed this could be my second ‘optical phenomenon’ already this year…. how cool is that! See ‘look up quick!’ / ps The atmospheric optics group have accepted the image which the wonderful photographer Ern Mainka confirms is a faint version of a brocken spectre ‘glory’ (the word they use to describe the kind of halo) ... Now look at his tremendous example of the real thing in full colour below (which makes me feel very humble indeed) entilted:- Brocken Spectre and Glory by Ern Mainka (press image for link to his page with fascinating details)

  • High Desert Phenomenon
    by Arla M. Ruggles

    US$4.32–US$98.80

High Desert Phenomenon / Steptoe Valley, NV ** / Canon 350D EOS / Canon 18/55mm JASC PaintShop Pro x7 + Corel PhotoImpact x3

  • Such an unusual sight as we came to a dip in the lovely border countryside late one afternoon . The hollow in the terrain was covered in what looked like a flattened dome of rainbow colours – imagine 3 bubblers joy…! jen whyte and heather croft will have great captures too…! here is heathers’ sideways rainbow view of the same…with heaps more detail… and jens Aura …after the rain where you can see a glimpe of sunlight…. Reading links from the atmospheric optics site it looks as if it could be a ‘low’ (rain)bow … linked to the sun (erm…what sun…teehee) being high in the sky…. ;))

  • dinghy's here
    by dinghysailor1

    US$3.99–US$91.20

I’m the one on the right with (with a halo? hehe..) while a friend walks by … (waldo? wally?)...... This the next cropped but otherwise unchanged picture after ‘where’s dinghy?’ below: / / I think it might be an something called a ‘brocken spectre’ (I’ve just heard about this tonight at my photography class – thanks mark!) . • Sunset Twister
    by Clive

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Unusual cloud formation taken at sunset in noth central Victoria Australia using an Olympus E520 DSLR camera. This image was sent to the Met boys to explain and they came back with / “We can sort of explain the upper level clouds which are ice particles and they sometime get caught in a vortex and rotate, we can sort of explain the lower levels as sometimes. but rarely, the dust will start to rotate, but we have never seen them joined before”. / So I guess I have scored another unusual phenomenon in our mysterious skys in in the land of Aus. / /

  • Sundog At Sunset
    by Ginny York

    US$4.16–US$95.00

I took this from the side of a road that leads to a lake near where I live. I had already caught quite a few nice shots at my house, and just couldn’t get enough. So I jumped in the car and raced over to that road. Out here in the foothills of the mountains, you can still catch the sun setting in certain spots, even after is has gone down in others. I was so happy I went. This Sundog reminds me of fireworks, and the clouds remind me of waves. It was one wild night in the sky. Something like I had never seen before…or since. Sun Dog – scientific name – parhelion, plural parhelia – for beside the sun. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. When sunlight passes through the sides of a flat crystal, both the angle of the sunrays and the orientation of the crystals affects the shape and color of the sun dogs. Misaligned or wobbling crystals produce colorful and elongated sun dogs as shown in this image.

  • This is a hurried picture taken on my pocket camera as we came into land on 11/6/08 just an hour before sunset. I am posting it for for interest as I think is another of those ‘brocken spectre glory’ things that I learnt about on redbubble (of course!). A snatched pic, not great quality due to engine vibration but fascinating to see that the shadow of the plane is projected onto the clouds below encircled by a perfect rainbow! ...something to do with the water droplets in the air! This is my second upload of this briefly seen ‘glory’ – tweaked this time with the help of the wonderfully talented Ern Mainka and Rosslyn Lunetta who know about these things! This has helped to bring out the beautiful rainbow colours which I saw even through the grubby plane window… / Sooo appreciated guys!! :))) For fuller details of what I think this may be do see the wonderful image and description by the amazing Ern Mainka / Brocken Spectre and Glory Also see Roslyn Lunetta’s amazing early morning Glory / and phenomenal glory and plane shadow For the original version see bullseye / (straightened – otherwise untouched )

  • Rainbow Of Love
    by Ginny York

    US$4.16–US$95.00

I took this shot off the deck in my front yard. The mountains are the Peaks of Otter…a section of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. This was a really wide rainbow and it is next to a heart shaped cloud. I thought that was pretty cool and not too common to see. Hope you enjoy it. It was awesome in person. / FEATURED IN BACKYARD PHOTOGRAPHY (NO MACROS) / FEATURED IN ALL ABOUT HEARTS / /

  • Ocean Explosion
    by Barbara Brown

    US$3.99–US$68.40

Playa Ventura in Mexico had an interesting phenomenon. The waves rolled out almost as powerfully as they rolled in. When they met, there was a dynamic and loud crashing of wave against wave. Canon EOS Rebel

  • more glory...
    by dinghysailor1

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Another day another plane but sitting in the same seat suggested by Roslynn Lunetta (thanks for the tip!) on the side opposite to the sun. As we started our descent into edinburgh I kept my eyes open to be rewarded with another amazing glimpse of a ‘glory’ as previously seen in bullseye and gloryous! http://www.redbubble.com/people/dinghysailor1/art/1252210-6-bullseye (see links pasted here for heaps more info and some excellent examples from other bubblers …) I had more zoom this time and it seems to have captured additional outer bands of colour tho the shape is not as regular and I didn’t get a clear shot of the plane’s shadow… It’s amazing to me how these phenomena are out there for the spotting! I spose lucky pilots must get to see heaps ..but everyone else seemed oblivious to this beautiful fleeting sight…...except us that is… ;)) Talking of pilots eye views here is pilot Val Salva of The Hurricane Hunters describing his experiences: “I’ve been shooting glories for years, and seldom do they come out as brilliant as they appear in real life… it was fun to get the .mpeg. I only wish we had a movie camera the day we were running head-on to a series of glories as we were clipping some cloud tops. After we’d punch through one cloud, you’d see a tiny dot inside a glory straight ahead, then as we came closer, the shadow of the airplane would zoom larger and larger, until you were “crashing” head on with a “plane” the same size! Then darkness inside the cloud for a few seconds, and then it would start all over again. yee-hah!”

  • Moon Ring Mill
    by Matt Harvey

    US$4.99–US$114.00

A silhouette of a wind mill makes the foreground for this rare phenomenon. / The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight (which of course is reflected sunlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is almost always the same size.
