Hatshepsut was born in the 15th century BC, she was the daughter of Tuthmose I and Aahmes, and was the favorite of their three children. When her two brothers died, she gained the throne upon the death of her father. To have a female pharaoh was most definitely unheard of. She was the first female queen of Egypt. /

Acrylic painting on A4 size Medium Texture Artist Canvas Sheet (primed) – 330 GSM. Size: 21cm x 29.5cm / _______ / This is a painting of Nefertari, favourite queen (1300 – 1250 BC) of Pharaoh Rameses II (1279 – 1213 BC). When her burial tomb was dicovered in the Valley of the Queens in 1904, it was described as the most beautiful tomb ever, by Italian Egyptologist Ernesto Schiaparelli. The tomb (or hypogeum) was built on the scale of a pharaoh’s tomb, decorated with paintings of astonishing beauty. / _____ / I added a cartouche and some hieroglyphics that was found in her tomb, on the right of her image in the painting. Some info about the cartouche: Like the body, the ba (soul), the ka (life force) and the shadow, the name, was regarded as an essential element of every individual. It had to be included in the deceased’s tomb to ensure survival in the afterlife. Nefertari’s name (enclosed in the royal cartouche), took the form of a statement: “beloved of Mut”. / _____ / This image took the no. 1 position on 29 March 2008 in Fine Arts on ArtWanted. Please go HERE to view. / _____ / Image copyright: Mariaan Krog 2008 / _____ / Available to buy in all print sizes. For buying info, see TOP RIGHT of this page. / _______ / / /

__________ / A4 size Medium Texture Artist Canvas Sheet (primed) – 330 GSM. ACRYLIC. / __________ / Cleopatra was the last in the line of her ancient pharaoh ancestors in ancient Egyptian times. The glorious reign of pharaohs came to an end with her death. She commited suicide by having a cobra snake bite her after she heard that Ceasar Octavius of the strong Roman Empire was near her palace. This way she did not suffer the humiliation of defeat by the enemy. / __________ / Image copyright: Mariaan Krog 2008 / __________ / Available to buy in all print sizes. The last of the three major pyramids at Giza is the pyramid for Pharaoh Menkaure. After this, the building of pyramids at the Giza plateau stopped – in fact, it’s believed this pyramid was completed after the Pharaoh’s death. From this vantage point, the pyramid seems lost and alone against the backdrop of the land and sky. It’s amazing to bear witness to the works of men who lived and died, like we all will, 4,000 years ago. /

Hey Everyone, / I’ve been back a few days from Egypt now, but recovering from a respiratory infection I picked up over there, so been a bit quiet and snowed under at work. I also lost my baggage but have been told I may be receiving it later then week (which is great news). / I had an absolutely fantastic time in Egypt and enjoyed myself to no end, I dressed as a local and wander the streets, ate fantastic food and made lots of new friends and penpals. I didn’t take as many photos as I predicted and that was partially due to me really embracing the holiday and just enjoying myself and the culture first hand rather then behind the lens. I still managed to rattle off over 7000 images and some movies to boot so I’m still importing the full collection onto my PC at home. Last night was my first chance to play with a few shots and I picked my favourite three portraits to share with my RB friends. I hope you all like them and the stories behind the captures. I was keeping a loose log of my adventures and travels so I am considering doing a slow release day by day account, with illustrations to accompany the account. There is a fair bit of work to get it up to scratch, but if there is any interest then I think the photos and stories compliment each other better then just images alone. Well I’m glad to be back, and while I struggle to get on top of my work and into a normal routine please enjoy my three favourite portraits (thus far) from my trip photos. And The Lord said. ‘Moses, / tell pharaoh, to set the Hebrews free, / or he will feel the wrath of me’ But Pharaoh, would not set them free. ‘I will punish him and the land, / with ten plagues sent from me, / from My Hand’ ‘The first is blood, / and the rivers and seas will flood / with the crimson of death. / This will happen for seven days, / until he is forced to change, his gruesome ways’ ‘And for the second, / frogs, rise from the Nile, / and infest his people so vile’. ‘From this handful of dust and grain / I will drive you, and your people insane, / with lice. May they swarm and irritate, / there will be no place to escape’. ‘Plagues four and five / will eat you and your cattle alive. / Why, will you not set them free?’ ‘You still disobey me?’ / Then let boils and sores / cover your bodies, the choice is yours!’ ‘Now hail, I will destroy your crops, / your people and animals will perish, in the hopes / that you will now set my people free.’ ‘How much more are you willing to take?’ / Let the locust fly. And finish off the crops / let them blacken the Sky’s, I, will not stop!’ ‘The Darkness now falls upon you, / thick blackness, the kind you can not see through. / Set them free Pharaoh.’ But still Pharaoh did not set them free. ‘And now. You must all pay / for every first born child will be slain, / including yours, Pharaoh.’ ‘But Moses, tell my people / to take the blood of a Lamb, / and to mark their doors with it. / Passover, / and they will be unharmed.’ And so, eventually they were free / escaping over the miracle / of the parted sea.

A little fun with textures. I experimented with a pencil sketch I had done a while back. The story, as always suggested itself while the drawing was evolving… With the fluids still pumping through his veins, the Pharaoh stumbled across the sandy wastes. His preparation for the after-life had not gone well and he suspected that his awakening had happened, just a little too early. His brain was foggy and his tongue felt thick and heavy in his mouth. He had asked for the miniaturisation process, but how far had they progressed, he wondered, before the disturbance. Something else was wrong, why did his head feel so huge? He stumbled on. I’m not seeing too well either, he thought, then he made the mistake of trying to rub his eyes. His scream would have awoken the rest of the sleeping pharaohs, if he could have opened his mouth.

..ancient Egyptian Pharaoh…. / Re (Ra) was the Egyptian sun god who was also often referred to as Re-Horakhty, meaning Re (is) Horus of the Horizon, referring to the god’s character. The early Egyptians believed that he created the world, and the rising sun was, for them, the symbol of creation. The daily cycle, as the sun rose, then set only to rise again the next morning

The pyramids and the enigmatic Sphinx have been visited for thousands of years, literally. The pyramid on the right (relative to the viewer) is the pyramid of Pharaoh Khafre. The best guess at this time is that the face of the Sphinx was his. It’s believed the clearing of land for his pyramid exposed the large rock the Sphinx was carved from. This was done to decorate what would have otherwise been an otherwise ordinary rock near his pyramid. To the left, appearing quite small here, is the last pyramid constructed at Giza, the tomb of Menkaure. More from Egypt

Nefertiti means, “The beautiful one has arrived.” She lived in Tell El Amarna, located nearly 300 hundred miles south of Cairo. ... first appears in history as Akhenaten’s wife. It’s believed Akhenaten and his queen brought forth such dramatic changes, that they were unloved by their subjects. Akhenaten constructed a place to worship Aten, the sun disk god… Supporting her husbands’ beliefs, she changed her name to Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti meaning, “The Aten is radiant of radiance [because] the beautiful one has come.” Nefertiti was more then just a queen, she supported her husband, promoted his religious beliefs, and was depicted more pharaonic, rather then queenly. ... Nefertiti was probably one of Egypt’s most powerful queens to ever rule. She was shown with the crown of a Pharaoh and was depicted in scenes of battle. Also a large tomb was constructed for her, thought to be a tomb fit for a Pharaoh. ... Not only did she live as royalty, but next to Akhenaten’s name in a cartouche was hers. This cartouche symbolised her status as a pharaoh and great importance. ... ~ Sourced from here

A new digital painting that shows Anubis preparing a pharaoh for the Afterlife. Various symbols from Egyptian mythology and culture are strategically placed within this colourful piece to reveal secret meanings. The work was created as a tribute to the great contribution this powerful and ancient culture has made to the World. ~ Skye “Anubis is the Greek name for a jackal-headed god associated with mummification and the afterlife in Egyptian mythology. In the ancient Egyptian language, Anubis is known as Inpu, (variously spelled Anupu). The oldest known mention of Anubis is in the Old Kingdom pyramid texts, where he is associated with the burial of the king. At this time, Anubis was the most important god of the Dead but he was replaced during the Middle Kingdom by Osiris.” (Info Source: Wikipedia)
