A truelly amazing petroglyph made by the Paiute Indians native to the Owens Valley. These glyphs are carved into very hard volcanic rock. Some say these are representations of the shamans hallucinogenic journeys. All content & images are © Nolan Nitschke. You may not use any images in any way without written consent from artist. Rock engravings (petroglyphs) occur at countless sites over a wide area in the Pilbara region, with a variety of styles and subjects. The engraved motifs generally depict fauna, animal tracks and abstract symbols. Pilbara Petroglyphs are considered the earliest example of art in Australia. My field assistant and I stumbled upon these ones while mapping in an area near Wodgina Station. We suddenly felt like very new arrivals in this ancient landscape…

Established in 1931 as a National Monument, Canyon de Chelly is within the Navajo Nation in Chinle, Arizona. The White House Ruins are located on the South rim drive of the canyon. The upper ruin of the White House ruins is located in a cave and the lower ruin rose high on the cliff walls, making access to the upper ruin possible. Canyon de Chelly continues to sustain a living community of Navajo people and is unique among National Parks, as it is wholly comprised of Navajo Tribal Trust Land, home to the canyon community.

A common sight among petroglyphs is the human hand connoting the presence of man, his work, his acheivements, his legacy. It also represents the direction of the creative spirit through a man, as a vessel for the Creator’s power.

Rock art, Newspaper Rock, Utah ‘Saw bear tracks this evening / Back from camp, / Up under the salmonberry, / Wet spot, / wide, wide foot. He turned off into the brush above camp – / That’s the noise I heard last night. / No berries now, hungry maybe. / So I’m down in the drift tonight, / on the dry sand, sleep here.’ / —Robert Sund, Poems from Ish River Country

A petroglyph is a carving or engraving in rock; especially an ancient one. My ancestors left tens of thousands such depictions of their lives on rocks throughout the Great American Southwest. / This fellow I have created here displays the Zia (Sun) with its four rays – “To the Zia Indian, the sacred number is embodied in the earth, with its four directions; in the year, with its four seasons; in the day, with the sunrise, noon, evening, and night; in life, with its four divisions—childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life and love, without beginning, without end.”

Five volcanic cones lie along the West Mesa of Albuquerque. They are part of the Petroglyph National Monument. The area surrounding the volcanoes is a favorite place of mine, because it has such a sense of spirituality and solitude. This is an original acrylic painting on canvas and measures 24” high x 30” wide.

Third in the series, this shot was taken of petroglyphs just outside of Chaco Canyon. The Anasazi were astute pottery makers, their distinctive black and white was the most prominent passed down many generations. They actively traded and formed roads (about 9 meters across and reached beyond 300km) leading out of their villages to their trade destinations, labeling roads and landmarks with symbols, like a clockwise spiral which depicted a good road and a counterclockwise spiral for a bad one. The Great North Road that stretched more than 20km pointing exactly southward, while they traded turquoise for parrot feathers, copper bells and cotton with MesoAmericans.

This rhyolite petroglyph caused me to pause; notice the large and small hand pounded into rock. This is an ancient ‘pounded rock pictograph” / This rock art made sense later as i drove it to find waterholes in the desert.
