A truelly amazing petroglyph made by the Paiute Indians native to the Owens Valley. These glyphs are carved into very hard volcanic rock. Some say these are representations of the shamans hallucinogenic journeys. All content & images are © Nolan Nitschke. You may not use any images in any way without written consent from artist. The Owens Valley has numerous petroglyph site. These petroglyph’s may have been made by the Paiute/Shoshone Indians but arrowheads that date to 10,000 years old have been found in this area, so it is difficult to say who really created them. In the background is White Mountain Peak, the third tallest in California at 14,252 ft. Owens Valley, Eastern Sierras, California. All images are © Nolan Nitschke. ‘Bear Track’ is from a petroglyph in Nebraska, representing one of the most important of all animals to the Native Americans. The bear for them symbolized courage & strength. I am making a sincere effort to present these designs as they originally appeared, with a wee bit of stylizing on my part. This series of tees is intended to honor the ancient ones and the art they left behind for us.
Left etched on a remote rock during a hunting foray, the ancient hunter stands depicted along with his quarry.
Just finished this historical journey through the cultural and tribal advances and achievements of a prehistoric people called the “ANASAZI” – pronounced ah-nah-Sah-zee, as my granddaughter gets ready to journey there and other parts of the Southwest.
‘Emergence’ is the first of a series of tees I am doing based on Native American symbology. It is from a petroglyph found in Utah and depicts the emergence of humans from the womb of the earth. I am making a sincere effort to present these designs as they originally appeared, with a wee bit of stylizing on my part. This series of tees is intended to honor the ancient ones and the art they left behind for us.

Rock engravings (petroglyphs) occur at countless sites over a wide area in the Pilbara region, with a variety of styles and subjects. The engraved motifs generally depict fauna, animal tracks and abstract symbols. Pilbara Petroglyphs are considered the earliest example of art in Australia. My field assistant and I stumbled upon these ones while mapping in an area near Wodgina Station. We suddenly felt like very new arrivals in this ancient landscape…
A companion piece to Pictograph.
Established in 1931 as a National Monument, Canyon de Chelly is within the Navajo Nation in Chinle, Arizona. The White House Ruins are located on the South rim drive of the canyon. The upper ruin of the White House ruins is located in a cave and the lower ruin rose high on the cliff walls, making access to the upper ruin possible. Canyon de Chelly continues to sustain a living community of Navajo people and is unique among National Parks, as it is wholly comprised of Navajo Tribal Trust Land, home to the canyon community.
A petroglyph is a carving or engraving in rock; especially an ancient one. My ancestors left tens of thousands such depictions of their lives on rocks throughout the Great American Southwest. / This fellow I have created here displays the Zia (Sun) with its four rays – “To the Zia Indian, the sacred number is embodied in the earth, with its four directions; in the year, with its four seasons; in the day, with the sunrise, noon, evening, and night; in life, with its four divisions—childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life and love, without beginning, without end.”
A common sight among petroglyphs is the human hand connoting the presence of man, his work, his acheivements, his legacy. It also represents the direction of the creative spirit through a man, as a vessel for the Creator’s power.

Five volcanic cones lie along the West Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They are part of the Petroglyph National Monument. The area surrounding the volcanoes is a favorite place of mine, because it has such a sense of spirituality and solitude. This is an original acrylic painting on canvas and measures 24” high x 30” wide.

In many indigenous cultures, Lizard can have several meanings; Conservation, agility. Lizard promotes dreaming. Also, ability to let go, elusiveness and able to avoid one’s enemies. This is a recreation of an ancient Mimbres (Mimbreños) culture lizard. The Mimbreños were an ancient people who inhabited the southwestern portion of present day New Mexico. They disappeared, most likely being absorbed into several of the Apache tribes who had located nearby.
