‘Emergence’ is the first of a series of tees I am doing based on Native American symbology. It is from a petroglyph found in Utah and depicts the emergence of humans from the womb of the earth. I am making a sincere effort to present these designs as they originally appeared, with a wee bit of stylizing on my part. This series of tees is intended to honor the ancient ones and the art they left behind for us.

Rock engravings (petroglyphs) occur at countless sites over a wide area in the Pilbara region, with a variety of styles and subjects. The engraved motifs generally depict fauna, animal tracks and abstract symbols. Pilbara Petroglyphs are considered the earliest example of art in Australia. My field assistant and I stumbled upon these ones while mapping in an area near Wodgina Station. We suddenly felt like very new arrivals in this ancient landscape…

Established in 1931 as a National Monument, Canyon de Chelly is within the Navajo Nation in Chinle, Arizona. The White House Ruins are located on the South rim drive of the canyon. The upper ruin of the White House ruins is located in a cave and the lower ruin rose high on the cliff walls, making access to the upper ruin possible. Canyon de Chelly continues to sustain a living community of Navajo people and is unique among National Parks, as it is wholly comprised of Navajo Tribal Trust Land, home to the canyon community.

A common sight among petroglyphs is the human hand connoting the presence of man, his work, his acheivements, his legacy. It also represents the direction of the creative spirit through a man, as a vessel for the Creator’s power.

Rock art, Newspaper Rock, Utah ‘Saw bear tracks this evening / Back from camp, / Up under the salmonberry, / Wet spot, / wide, wide foot. He turned off into the brush above camp – / That’s the noise I heard last night. / No berries now, hungry maybe. / So I’m down in the drift tonight, / on the dry sand, sleep here.’ / —Robert Sund, Poems from Ish River Country

A petroglyph is a carving or engraving in rock; especially an ancient one. My ancestors left tens of thousands such depictions of their lives on rocks throughout the Great American Southwest. / This fellow I have created here displays the Zia (Sun) with its four rays – “To the Zia Indian, the sacred number is embodied in the earth, with its four directions; in the year, with its four seasons; in the day, with the sunrise, noon, evening, and night; in life, with its four divisions—childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life and love, without beginning, without end.”

Five volcanic cones lie along the West Mesa of Albuquerque. They are part of the Petroglyph National Monument. The area surrounding the volcanoes is a favorite place of mine, because it has such a sense of spirituality and solitude.

Sophie Shapiro was kind enough to give some information about Petroglyphs..as follows: There are many theories to explain the purpose of Petroglyphs however depending on their location, age, and the type of image. Some petroglyphs are thought to be astronomical markers, maps, and other forms of symbolic communication, including a form of pre-writing. They might also have been a by-product of other rituals: sites in India, for example, have been identified as musical instruments or rock gongs. / Some petroglyph images probably had deep cultural and religious significance for the societies that created them; in many cases this significance remains for their descendants. Many petroglyphs are thought to represent some kind of not-yet-fully understood symbolic or ritual language. Yours is a beautiful addition to them! Well done!Sx *I was having a dream of Petroglyphs.. and here is as close as I can describe the dream… *

In many indigenous cultures, Lizard can have several meanings; Conservation, agility. Lizard promotes dreaming. Also, ability to let go, elusiveness and able to avoid one’s enemies. This is a recreation of an ancient Mimbres (Mimbreños) culture lizard. The Mimbreños were an ancient people who inhabited the southwestern portion of present day New Mexico. They disappeared, most likely being absorbed into several of the Apache tribes who had located nearby.
