Four days into the new year saw the first major bushfire in Perth for 2009. In the suburb of Brookdale (about 25 kms south of the city), 70 firefighters fought to bring the fire under control. The firefighters, plus five helitacs and two fixed wing water bombers worked together to extinguish the flames which burned 82 hectares of bushland. / A helitac helping to bring the blaze under control. / / One of two fixed wing water bombers There were no threats to houses in the area but a number of roads were closed in the area. / Police and fire crews block roads surrounding the area. A summer heatwave hasn’t helped the threat of more bushfires this season with temperatures in Perth unrelenting. The maximum temperature in Perth has been over 32 degrees C (90 f) for 14 days straight with only 4 of those days under 35 degrees C (95 f). / A cool break is expected for the next couple of day with maximum temperatures expected to reach only 27 and 28 degrees C before returning to the low 30’s again after that.

One of my fireworks images was featured into the Australian travel photography group. For those who are interested this image contains no photoshop and the affect was achieved in camera. The camera shutter was locked open to bulb & a piece of cardboard was placed over the lens. A series of 3 seperate fireworks bursts were released. I removed the cardboard for approx 4 seconds then recovered the lens. This process was repeated for each burst & then when I had sufficiently filled the frame closed the shutter revealingthe finished product. / cheers Nigel http://www.redbubble.com/people/nigeldonald/art/632342-3-australia-day

While messing around with some old images, I dug up one of many fire works pics. This image had been burried in my hard drive unedited for 2 yrs. / With a quick boost in CS3 vibrance, sharpness, and a minor rotation which was all was needed .The rest was capturted in camera. / An old trick i read about about 30 yrs ago was to set a long exposure and use a piece of cardboard to cover the lens. / This image was set up with a bulb exposure, manual focus,f16,AWB,RAW,tripod,shutter realease cable, lens hood, cardboard. / The cardboard was removed for each burst approx 4 secs & the shutter locked open for 2 min. The rest is a guess on when the frame was filled. This image was featured in the Canon DSLR group / Fire Works
