  • Close up Portrait,

  • Martha was painted during my filing for divorce. The figure is in an angry wound-up pose, with arrow in hand, ready to release if pushed any further. It was a loose sketch painted in traditional oils. The face was changed to a mask because I was having to contain my anger at the time to thwart danger in the situation—hence the arrow behind the back but the mask of accommodation. The name is a play on Martha Graham (dancer) and Martha and the Vandellas (the singing group). The blue swirls on top of the red dress also are an attempt to pacify my anger with purer thoughts and activities. Original is a 36” x 48” oil on canvas. This is a cropped portion of a large painting.

  • A wet apple blossom, photographed in my next-door neighbor’s back yard. The translucent white petals were reflecting just enough of the available natural light onto the “heart” of the blossom to allow the shot to be possible. This shot was captured on May 2nd, 2009. It is “untouched”, just as the lens “saw” it. This macro photo was captured with a Canon EOS 10D using a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro prime lens. The shutter speed was 1/30th sec at f/16. The camera’s ISO was set to 400. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist. • I just love Carolina wrens; they are perky and bursting with personality. This one seemed to be saying, “Chin up!” Makes me cheerful just to see him. The Carolina wren is known for its jaunty little poses, its upright tail, its distinctively long white eyebrow, and most of all its LOUD song! This little bird can belt out some tunes! Their movements are rapid and erratic and unlike some songbirds that linger at the feeders, the Carolina wren usually is very hasty about getting its grub and leaving abruptly which makes it hard to photograph as a result. Though they have occasionally made nests in nesting boxes, they seem to prefer hanging baskets for their domain. They build little igloo-like dwellings lined with soft mosses and lichens cleverly concealed within a fern or other such plants. Usually, the first time I notice their presence in one of my hanging baskets is during a routine watering when the wren comes charging out of hiding, sometimes barely missing my head! A cute little neighbor all around!

  • This is one of the first portraits I did, for an assignment, when I was taking the NYIP course. Yep, it’s my beautiful mom! :) I just added the texture now.
