Art has always played a big part in Tom Godfrey’s life. For 20 years the former schoolteacher ran the art department at Highbury High School in South Africa. “Teaching fulfilled most of my creative urges,” he says, “I could try all sorts of artistic things with the kids, which was fun for them and for me.” It was only during school holidays that Tom had time to work on his own creations. “I guess it all started when I made cartoon covers for the school’s cultural and sporting events – things like the evolution of the running shoe, although a little simpler. “After that I thought I’d try my hand at watercolour. Eventually, I joined a watercolour society and exhibited. To my delight I sold two landscape paintings,” he says. Even for such a talented artist the rest hasn’t quite been ‘history.’ For Tom, giving up the day job to pursue his passion was too much of a risk. “There is nothing like a regular income when you have regular expenses,” he says. Even so, he dreamed of retiring early to become a full time artist. Last year Tom and his wife immigrated to Sydney. The move was prompted by a need to look after Tom’s mother-in-law who suffers with MS. It was the fresh start he had been waiting for. “I realized once I had given up my day job in South Africa that the future was a clean slate and being older, and hopefully wiser, I decided that it was up to me as to what was recorded on that slate. “I have given myself a window of about two years to make it, in some form, in the art world. “A full time artist once said to me, ‘Tom, put yourself in a corner and paint your way out of it.’ I always like that image,” he says. Although one of the most respected and versatile artists in the Red Bubble community, Tom is still searching for his niche. “The problem is I’m interested in so many different approaches to 2D art,” he says. “In traditional media I use both acrylic and pastel to create wildlife and landscape paintings. But I also love cartooning, caricaturing and sci-fi. ”I’m not focused on a single approach yet as I am testing out new markets to see what sells – I need to eat first and indulge later,” he says. Tom is currently working part time in a local gallery while building his reputation on and offline. “I’m starting to get commissions coming through,” he says, “Although things are probably taking longer than I expected.” Cartoons and caricatures have proved most commercially successful for Tom but it’s his outstandingly original sci-fi / fantasy artwork that gets him most excited. “If I won the Lottery that’s the stuff I would concentrate on,” he says wistfully. As well as the visual appeal of his alien landscapes populated with characters like Gorgon and Zola, Japanese Fighting Fish, and the Clakkerpods, Tom’s illustrations are accompanied by tantalising back-stories. “The stories just come to me as I work on an image,” he says, “I guess it all comes from having an overactive imagination.” - Craig Scutt More of Tom’s art can be found here /

I have just learned a really useful little tip for Sharpening images in Photoshop which I thought I should share with you all. Until now when I sharpened an image in CS3 with Smart Sharpen I used to sharpen and then leave it at that. As you may well know over sharpening can produce exaggerated noise and produce “halo” effects on your edges which look plain nasty. Here’s a few useful tips to help you improve the quality of your sharpening. – Always sharpen to a NEW LAYER (Merge all to new layer using SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+E on PC’s) – I always convert this layer to a smart object to allow me to modify any applied filter effects. – Always change the blend mode on this layer to LUMINOSITY. This massively reduces the halo effects on your sharpened image. (Try over-sharpening an image and then changing the blend mode to luminosity just to see this in action) – Follow these guidelines for smart sharpening for the best results For STANDARD SHARPENING – Amount 100, Radius <=2 / For SOFT IMAGES – Amount 140, Radius <=1 / For PORTRAITS – Amount <=5 Try these guidelines out and see what you think.
The first time I met people off the internet, it was …
The first time I met people off the internet, it was 20 bubblers at some pub I’d never been to, and I was supposedly the organsier- I was a nervous wreck! Meeting complete and utter strangers off the internet isn’t always easy, even for the most social butterflies, and even if you feel like you know them pretty well from online. So think about how best to comfort people and make them realise that not everyone on the internet is a scary monster… - meet in a public place where there are passers by / - consider a daytime meet / - ensure any activities include people / - invite attendees to bring a friend or partner along for moral support / - be clear about how to identify each other at the meet up point / - have a way for attendees to contact you/someone on the day / - touch base with attendees prior to the day so they know you really do exist and that it will be going ahead. Inviting People / Well I can tell you how not to invite people- with a vague open ended forum post like “anyone in suchandsuchatown want to meet up one weekend?” This results in three pages of umming and arring and trying to work out details. What you need to do is give it some thought and present a cohesive idea along with the message that you are flexible to other people’s ideas. / Here is an example of how I first suggested a group of us drive 3 hours out of melbourne for a night in Lorne. I suggest having the following details in your invitation post: - A date and time to meet / - A specific meet up location (somewhere well known is best) / - A suggested activity for the day/evening / - How you will identify each other / - How you will contact attendees should there be a change of plans / - How attendees should contact you/someone else should they be late etc. / - Advise people on what they should bring- lunch money, camera etc. Once you have written and posted your invitation in all the right places, (such as a relevant group) people will start to respond. Some will jump in with a big YES!, others will express disappointment at living at the other side of the world, others will ask you to change the date, some will ask you to change other details. When negotiating details, remember that more changes, the more confusing it gets. So don’t feel like you need to bend to every person who can’t make a certain date, or whatever. Some people will miss out – they can come to the next one! / Lorne 07 – RB Melb Group Shot by whoalse A few days before Let attendees know that it is in fact going ahead, confirm the details and get yourself orgainsed. If you have promised them red balloons to mark the meet up point- buy them. If you need to wash your picnic rug, do it. Just trust me on this. You will be nervous on the day itself and are more likely to forget things. Some of my suggestions for the day before are: - charge you camera batteries / - print off a list of people who are coming and any mobile numbers you have for them / - double check any reservations you have and confirm numbers / - Charge your mobile phone and ensure you have enough credit to make several calls / - If you are doing the popular red balloon thing, bring string to tie them to something / - Pack a map, even if you know the area well. It makes giving directions to others easier. / - If there is a reservation, make sure attendees know what name it is under Once you are all packed, leave everything you are taking at the front door or in a pile somewhere like that. On the Day This is the bit where people call you to cancel, rock up late, get lost, and never arrive for reasons you will never find out. - Have your mobile phone on Loud. Boy I have learned this the hard way several times over! / - Be the first person to the meetup point / - Decide how long you are prepared to hang around waiting for latecomers / - Watch out for people arriving / - Introduce yourself with a smile and if your real name is different to your username, introduce yourself with both names. / - Introduce people to each other as they arrive Then you all go off and have a bunch of fun!!! The rest takes care of itself, trust me :) Oh yeah, almost forget… the absolute most important bit of all / post all the photos in a journal post on redbubble so we can all see :)

There is so much crazyfreakycool stuff happening around here at the moment anyone would think it was Christmas already. Actually anyone who has been into any shop since August would think it was Christmas already. Firstly, calling all t-shirt mentalists, do you want your clothes hung in a store next to Carnaby Street, London? Does Amy Winehouse need to go into hibernation? Of course, so go and check out this mentalist tee comp we just launched over here, you’ll be too excited to sit down. Secondly, anyone hanging around the t-shirt section in the last six months would have had to be clinically dead to have not noticed the infectious rise of one Natalie ‘I’ve got at least a million new challenges up my sleeve’ Tyler, who has more impact on the clothing world of RedBubble than the Earl of Sandwich had on convenience food. So without further ado I’d like to officially welcome her into the RedBubble fold. Good work Nat. She’ll be doing lots of community based bits and pieces and also some good healthy idea generating and marketing and probably a whole bunch of other stuff that she hasn’t bargained for at all. And while we’re on the subject on new staff, I’d like to introduce you to Rhana Griffin who you’ll probably have noticed around the place being super helpful and energetic, so super helpful in fact we thought we’d make it official, so now Rhana will be focusing on our customer service, a role she’s already been assisting admirably with, and has now made it a full time objective, nicely done. / / And finally, the sharp ones among you will have noticed that Nat is based in London, the sharper of you may have also noticed that a few months ago I moved my bombshell of a desk at the Melbourne RB office to that very same London, and it’s about now I’d like to stir up the interests of all of you who are perfectly capable of dealing with 362 days of rubbish weather, extraordinarily full trains and very expensive cornish pasties, and direct your attention here. The official home of RedBubble UK, where Nat and myself can keep you all abreast of future challenges, meet-ups and general English shenanigans, in the cold. That’s about all the excitement I can handle right now. / / Originally from here

I’ve had a few people ask how I achieved the finish to some of my portraiture works, so as promised, I’ll try and explain as best I can, how I acheived the image below. This is by no means a step by step guide, as I generally just mess about with an image until I’m happy with it. There are however, certain effects in photoshop I tend to favour for certain subject matters, so I can at least give you an insight into those! To start of with, if you are going to heavily edit a photo, it’s generally important you are working on perfectly focussed image in the first place, so if you are going for quality, use a tripod. The reason this is important, is because when you edit your work, you are directly affecting the pixels of your digital image, and somtimes, editing can cause pixel loss, therefore reducing the quality and sharpness of the image. Lighting is another important factor – it doesn’t have to be perfect, but make sure you don’t have any areas that are very under or over-exposed. One thing I always do when I start editing, is to duplicate the background layer twice to create three layers. I then hide the background layer, leaving two layers visable. I then tend to work on the top layer when adding effects, and once I’m happy with each effect, I merge with the second layer before duplicating the merged layer ready for the next effect. This way, you always have your untouched background layer so if you do go terribly wrong, you haven’t lost your original image. You can also use your background layer to compare your edited layer with. I find this very useful to measure how far you’ve come with your editing. If you’ve gone to far, and over edited, you can always reduce the opacity of the edited version to get some of the detail back, before merging with a duplicated copy of your background layer. To create a glamour style portrait, I generally start by tidying up the image. If it’s too grainy, I use despeckle or reduce noise, but this can cause loss of detail to important areas like the eyes or lips. Detail can be recovered by carefully using the eraser tool on these areas. This will reveal the layer beneath. These layers can then be merged and duplicated. I focus very much on the eyes and mouth of my portraiture work, and I frequently select these areas using the marquee tool or pen tool, (set to a feather strength of 100 or so) and sharpen them using the unsharp mask. Any areas that look over sharpened can always be erased with the eraser tool. I also use this method to increase contrast. The next step I might take is to set the colour palette to a very pale flesh colour and select diffuse glow. It’s always best to add each effect in a subtle way. I often repeat effects over and over adding just a hint each time. It might be more time consuming, but the final result will be much more pleasing to the eye. After you’re happy with the glow of the skin, have a play about with the layer effects in the layer palette. My favourites are “overlay” “screen” and “multiply”. To create the effect of smooth skin, I add a suitable layer effect, and then choose gaussian blur. You will have to play about with the slider here to see what strength looks best. I often reduce the opacity after each effect before merging with my second layer. I find the effects work much better adding a little each time. Remember that if you lose any detail in the eye/mouth area, you can recover it by using the eraser tool. The next step might be to add accented edges – I find this can add extra sparkle, especially to the highlights of the lips and eyes. A common setting for the highlight strength is 28 or 29, but again, have a mess about with it and see what effect it has on your image. I use a variety of methods to get the colour and tone of an image right, and I tend to begin by using the selective colour option. I’ve actually only just discovered this way of altering colour, and I find this option gives you much more control than any other method. The best advise I can give on getting the colour balance right, is to trust your instincs. If it feels right, it is. Same goes for any other editing you do. Try not to think too much about how it should look, and more on how you feel about an effect or colour you just added. Art is about expression in the most honest way. If you like it, it’s right! Other options to alter the colour and tone of an image are photo filters, colour balance and variations. I tend to use all of them at some point during my portraiture works. Another effect I frequently use is craquelure. This can work great on eyes and lips to bring out texture and highlight. Again, I will select the area I want to enhance, then after the effect, I usually either reduce the opacity of the layer, or fade the effect via the edit menu so it doesn’t look to harsh. Well, that’s pretty much the basics! I will usually run through each of these effects alternately adding a bit at a time. I often return to the eye/lip area to sharpen or add contrast. The skin can be further smoothed by reducing noise and or, despeckling repeatedly. Any detail like hair, eyes and lips, can again be recovered using the eraser tool. I hope this journal gave you a useful insight into how I go about my portraiture works. It might not be a step by step guide but I hope it will encourage you to acheive the effects you desire from photoshop. Let me know if there are any areas you are unsure about, or if there are any other questions, either leave a comment or bubblemail me. Happy editing!! Jen :-)

I have put together this year’s collection of my favourite photos in a gallery. A couple of things - / These are not necessarily my best photos, whatever that means. They definitely are not my most popular photos – in fact, the majority of them have not been seen before. But they are my personal favourites in 2008 (in chronological order), for many and various reasons. You’ll find many genres, from landscape to street, from floral to abstract. However, many of my favourites cannot be shown, as they were taken for clients who do not give permission for public display. Another bit of trivia – I counted 11 photos that have been cropped. I mention this, because one of the things I enjoy about photography is to frame and compose on site. Anyway, enjoy. There are a lot of them – 105, I think. Slideshow works best, on black. If you skim through them, I’ll know, and come and eat your cat. 2008 – A Photographic Retrospective

So the night started well with many bubblers drinking and yelling and screaming and having fun, though I didn’t get the camera out till later when the lights had dimmed the crowds had thinned a little and the barstaff had started to emerge from there bunkers to serve us again. (Oh and the yellow cast may have had to do with the mood-lit exposed low light bulbs swinging above our heads.) 1. / 2. / 3. / 4. / 5. / 6. / 7. / 8. / 9. / +1. / +2. / +3. / +4. / and lastly, for the caption competition of what did John Robb just say to get Jo to actually look shocked 10. / Please note – Other people were photographed and other shots were taken but due to blurring, shyness and general alcohol, these have not made it up to the journal.

I’m pretty certain I have one of the greatest jobs in the universe. Working remotely from home for Redbubble means that I don’t have to deal with traffic, if my children are ill and need to stay home from school it’s no biggie, and I can wear my Elmo pj’s all day and no one will even batt an eyelid. Except my dog. But I have a large stash of schmacko’s to keep her from blabbing to the neighbours ;) For all that though, I find myself isolated. The personalities of my work colleagues are reduced to words on a screen, and an occaisional crackly voice over some shonky internet phone chat setup. So when I find myself invited over to Melbourne to spend some real time at RB HQ, I always grab the opportunity in both hands and run with it as fast as my short little Elmo clad legs will carry me! I mean let’s face it… no matter how hard we try to infuse our personalities down into our modems, what comes out on the other side is only going to be a shadow of our true selves. Being able to see someones face animated with life as they speak, being able to read their body language as you make them laugh… that is something we really can only do face to face. And it is these interactions that round us out and fulfill our sense of connection to other members of the human race. For example… Over the internet I could not have seen how much Geoff’s face lights up when he let’s rip with his infectious laugh. I would never have realised that Xav, Troy and Russ are the Larry, Curly and Moe of Redbubble. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have guessed that Nat and Jo are soul sisters of the Cousin It variety. Nor would I have been able to witness the effect a massive amount of caffiene has on Russ. And I most certainly would never, ever, have imagined that Xav owned a pair of shoes. Let alone that he would actually wear them! Spending some quality real world time with my colleagues has given a much greater depth to our interactions with each other over the internet, and this is something that I have also witnessed at the many Redbubble meet-ups I have attended. These meets are so much more important than just “putting a face to a name”. Meeting fellow creatives from Redbubble provides a deeper sense of connection that simply can’t be conveyed through the written word alone. If you have never had the opportunity to attend a Redbubble meet, go hunt one down in your area or even better yet, why not organise one yourself? Your life will certainly be the richer for it. Rhana P.S. For those who are wondering at the title of this journal well… Shrek was pretty big in our house ;) And friendships are like onions. Many different layers.

Yesterday the latest issue of my Artists Magazine plopped through my mail slot and as usual I sat down to devour it whole...to my surprise the first words that jumped out at me from the business section was the word RedBubble…I immediately abandoned the other articles... I rapidly scanned the section, just to make sure there was nothing critical that would result in a immediate letter to the editor, and having assertained that it was all praise, relaxed and read it again.. They focused on three artists.. Ross Ford, Tim Aldridge and Derek Stewart (I could not find the last two profiles, though they showed pictures of the actual pages)....with quotes from the artists, RB was praised for it’s high quality Tshirts, diversity of wall art, browse by categories, and of course the wonderful community of “artists who give you encouragement and feedback“ With a final section on the ease of use, quality of printing, and pricing, the article mentions that unlike others, artists can sign up at RedBubble for free…the article also included sections on Imagekind and Etsy, but I left those for later…much later
