Today I went back over my profile and journal entries and realised I’ve only been on RedBubble for 6 weeks. In that time so much has happened… I’ve collaborated a few times, met people for coffee to talk art, organsied a Melbourne Meet up, helped RedBubble artists get their stuff into galleries (and sold some!), been interviewed for ‘the chair’ and am in the middle of working out how to open a RedBubble Gallery or similar somewhere in Melbourne. I’ve also learned that I can only sell photos of my bottom! It’s amazing what you can get done when you really believe in something and focus on making it happen. The people on RedBubble have made it so special for me. The standard of work is always improving making logging on the best feeling. I am inspired to be creative and try new things. I am drawn to the amazing relationships and interactions shared on here. I am so thankful to be part of such a wonderful creative community. Thank you all for making me feel so welcome.

By Darren Stones Our friend Joe Mortelliti is scheduled to be admitted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on Monday 22 October 2007 for two rounds of chemotherapy treatment in readiness for a bone marrow transplant. On Tuesday 30 October 2007, Joe is scheduled for a bone marrow transplant at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Joe’s bone marrow donor is his brother. Joe Mortelliti – August 2007 Many of you are aware of Joe’s battle with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia during 2007, and it’s reached a point where his doctors have strongly recommended he undergo further treatment to help secure his long-term health. Early this week, Joe had two days of tests on his vital organs, blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy. Joe will be in hospital for approximately five weeks and isolated due to a risk of infection. He will then be moved into units located near the hospital provided by the Leukaemia Foundation where Marion and he can stay together. Approximately every two days, Joe will undergo further tests, monitoring and be given support for a few hours. This will continue until February 2008, when he is due to return home to Geelong. Bone marrow transplants are generally not offered to people over 55 due to the severity of the treatment on ageing bodies. Joe has recently turned 57, so he acknowledges he’s been given a special opportunity. Joe informs that a bone marrow transplant has risks, but provides a cure from leukaemia. Joe has remained positive throughout and retained his sense of humour in such trying times. He has proudly continued to support and encourage his peers. He was recently invited by fellow RedBubble and PassionForPixels member Mark Ingram to supply photographs to his specialist stock library. Joe has more outback roads to travel and numerous photographs to take. He and his wife Marion are determined to live their lives together to the full. Joe and Marion would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has expressed wonderful support via e-mail throughout their first journey. As Joe and Marion prepare for their second journey, it’s their precious children, family and friends, and friends they have not yet met who help them to go ahead one small step at a time, one day at a time. Joe’s extensive portfolio of images can be viewed and purchased at RedBubble.com http://www.redbubble.com/people/mortelliti I’d like you to join me in expressing best wishes to Joe and Marion, and the Mortelliti family. Thank you.

This is my homework for the course I am currently doing at Brunswick Street Gallery. We have to take a self portrait which does not show our face but which does show something of ourselves. This may not be the one I submit, but it has been an interesting exercize and I thought I would share. I often post work here without much of an explanation into the choices I make. I thought it might be nice to make it available so you can see that I do actually put a bit of thought into my work, even if it is not obvious at first glance. The Easels: / Faded and old. They represent myself as an artist. How of late I am taking fewer and fewer photos and am out of practice. They are scattered at random, which is a lot like my very hectic and chaotic life. Yet they all match, which shows my underlying need to have organisation, even if it is organised chaos. You may notice the empty frame. For me this represents not only my occupation, but it’s emptiness means it acts as a window. A way to see into me. It is a comment on the whole image as well as an element within it. The Doll: / This is a childhood doll and has my old name written on it (from before I became Jo O’Brien). So it connects to my past and reminds me of a time passed. She is naked, which reflects how I feel as an artist, always confessing through my art. She is torn at both arms from being pulled in a tug-of-war game. Much like how I feel when I have more things requiring my time than I have time for. On a more human level. She represents my desire to one day have children, my “femaleness”, my nurturing side. The Costume: / It was scavenged from an op shop. Something I absolutely adore doing. And it fits like a second skin, showing my comfort in front of the camera. It’s close colour match to my skin implies nudity which highlights a more general level of comfort with my body, and ability to play a role within my own skin. It’s second hand nature reminds me that a ‘creative artist life’ was never my first choice. In fact, I studied Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths Methods in VCE and always had an aptitude for the sciences. Art was an accident. The Location: / At home in the back yard. Here I feel most relaxed and comfortable. It has been the location of numerous photo shoots and self portraits, so much so that I would feel like I was abondoning this space to take self portraits elsewhere. It also represents for me, my ability to live off my creativity, as my best selling shot was taken here. More generally I enjoy the idea of fences, of what they hold in and out. And of how to break them down. This is a theme I like to play with in a lot of my work- the emotional and psychological barriers we put up around ourselves, often needlessly. Setting up the shot: / I wanted to appear within the forest of easels and yet comfortable which dictated my pose, leaning gently against the fence. This shows my acceptance of the situation and environment and willingness to participate within it. However I am still holding my doll and not interacting with any other part of the environment. This suggests I still cling to something from my childhood, and have insecurites about the art world and my credibility as an artist. Your thoughts?

Us Melbourne bubblers love the chance to get together, so every time someone comes from interstate we try to take them out for some fun. This time it was Leia Homer come to stay. Who thought we’d make such great friends through an online community? Yay for friends just felt like sharing the love… / Leia Homer being my hands (She is visiting us from Adelaide- how cool!) / Jess getting her hair done by me while Wen and Chris take photos… yes, we’re that easily entertained / Wen didn’t want a kiss / Michael and Kristy being all cute and couply… have we had a redbubble wedding yet? / Chris sitting on me… I’m trying to remember if there was a reason for that? / Kristy being a secretay… or was that sexytary?

Got your attention? The problem is, I haven’t got one, but other people do. As I was growing up, my mum said “if you are gay, it doesn’t matter, I love you” so many times I asked her if she wanted me to be gay. (I’m not) I grew up hearing about the conflict other people had, in other countries, with a mother who would do what she could to help (via Amnesty International). The old ‘best friend’ story-one of my oldest friend, who’s known me since she was two, finally came out a few years ago. We asked her what took her, cos we all knew: even in the most accepting environments, it’s not easy. I knew from the first 5minutes of meeting the BF’s mate (on the goldcoast last year) he was fully homophobic. I promptly told him if he went on about it anymore, I’d assume he was gay. Protest, protest. He protests too much. Then, the BF’s mate was down on the weekend. For the week. And again, proceeded to go on about it. To make jokes. (amongst the swearing, shopping sprees to Armani, and clouds of deodorant. Then hours on xbox). I’d had it up to here. I told him in no uncertain terms that people I love are gay, friends and family. They may not be here now, but I can’t laugh at jokes like that, because if they were there, I’d be insulting them, and he was insulting me by talking like that about gay people. That here in Sydney, people are tolerant of gay people, and don’t make a big issue about it. And I won’t let him be around my friends, hearing him talk like that. Of course, he has no ability to reply here. He promises he’s joking and wouldn’t say those things around anyone else. He knows it’s not appropriate. (not around me either buddy) I’m doing the parent-child thing telling him off. But you know what? I just read in the paper a guy and his partner (who I went to school with) have been bashed. His partner needed surgery, and will never look the same. The police said there’s not much they can do. They had to fight to get the CCTV footage, before it’s written over. The thieves took their phones and have called his mum, telling him they’ve killed her son. That is sick. Did you know something like 90% of bashings are sexuality related? That figure may not be 100% accurate. All that matters is that it’s happened to two people too many. If the police’s attitude is like that, many more too many. We as artists have a voice, and t-shirts to raise awareness, to design images and slogans that promote goodness in the world. I’m saddened that violent images perpetuate. That violence has been cool. Call me a hippy, but though love is sometimes seems harder. but it’s worth the effort. It takes effort. but it actually makes our lives better. There is another person to love, rather than hate in our world. Ironically, (as I say ‘tolerate’) I couldn’t stay at home with a person speaking like that in the house. I do not tolerate that talk. I told him what I’d thought, and out of respect to the BF, didn’t kick him out-it was good timing for me to take a holiday somewhere else. I think that sent the message, despite the fact I didn’t change his opinion (I can’t make him). I’m not sure what else to say, but if you have a problem with gay people, get over it. If you can’t quite do that, go play football, hit a punching bag or rev your car that little bit louder. We know you’re macho enough. We’d probably like you anyways, if you weren’t. Seriously, that behaviour is better than hurting someone we love. Knowing that, maybe we can laugh about how silly those people were, to once behave like that, and enjoy a better reality. That includes you.

Last weekend I spent one day roaming the city doing some fashion shots. Straight fashion is not my usual style, so I appreciated the test shoot to try out some ideas. Anyway, here is some of what I came up with. As you can tell, I’m still playing with ideas and developing the right skills for this genre of photography but it lots of fun! Did you know that every day over 5000 people walk through the doors of The Rialto Towers? / The Rialto Towers by Paul Villani – who is also the mastermind behind this idea. GO PAUL! Wouldn’t it be really cool if you could put your art in front of those 5000+ people every day for 2 weeks? That’s 5000 business people, tourists, people redecorating their homes, people with a 30 minute lunch break and nothing but blank walls to look at. And wouldn’t it be even cooler if that work was for sale and you could make money out of it? Well if you are in Melbourne or Victoria now you can. make with the clicky clicky / Fog 2 by James Price – who is not the mastermind behind this idea but is still very nice This crazy cool idea wsa thunk up by Paul with the help of his side kicks and co-conspirators Mark and Jo

As artists, we are often thrown off course by the judgements of others…We may start to doubt ourselves and try to please them at the expense of our own beliefs about our work. / We should be free to create exactly as we choose. Other people’s opinions are just that….they belong to the speakers. We can listen, but we do not need to accept them as our truths. In accepting them we may do work that is not true to our own vision, acceding to the opinions of those who may have their own particular agenda. Some times as we listen, we may hear suggestions that we can use…Other times we may hear words that ring with envy or jealousy of our creative gifts. We can allow others to have their feelings but we don’t need to accept them…. We do not need to allow our lives to be controlled by other people’s judgements and convictions…. ...Simple Abundance…Still Life with Kale….Watercolour and Pen and Ink When we learn to stay detached, and start to feel secure about ourselves and our art, when we respect ourselves for own views, the opinions of others can be placed in true perspective...Janis…inspired by The Artist’s Soul

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side… / With a 5- kg potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10- kg potato bags. Then try 50- kg potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100- kg potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. / (I’m at this level.) After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. /
