Pendle, old Pendle, thou standest alone. / Twixt Burnley and Clitheroe, Whalley and Colne, / Where Hodder and Ribble’s fair waters do meet / With Barley and Downham content at thy feet. Pendle, old Pendle, majestic, sublime / Thy praises shall ring till the end of all time / Thy beauty eternal, thy banner unfurled, / Th’art dearest and grandest old hill in the world When witches fly out on a dark rainy night, / We’ll not tell a soul, and we’ll bar the door tight, / We’ll sit near to t’ fire, and keep ourselves warm / Until once again we can walk on thy arm. Pendle, old Pendle, by moorland and fell / In glory and loveliness, ever to dwell / On life’s faithful journey, where e’er I may be, / I’ll pause in my labours, and oft think of thee. Milton Allen

Taken with a Canon 50D, Sigma 17-70 lens at 17mm, F11, shutter speed 1/30 second, ISO100, tweaked in Photoshop I went for a drive in the countryside near where I use to live, this shot was taken half way up Pendle Hill in the wonderful Ribble Valley. Pendle Hill is located in the north-east of Lancashire, England, near the towns of Burnley, Nelson, Colne, Clitheroe and Padiham. Its summit is 557 metres (1,827 ft) above mean sea level. It gives its name to the Borough of Pendle. It is an isolated hill, separated from the Pennines to the east and the Forest of Bowland to the northwest. It lies to the southwest of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is a detached part of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Please view large!

  • Sallys Bridge – Wycoller Village – Pendle – Lancashire As one approaches the village of wycoller there is nothing to suggest the mystery and beauty that awaits the visitor. One almost seems to step back in time the moment the village comes into view. The word Wycoller originates from the Anglo Saxon Wic-Alr, meaning dairy farm among the alder trees.Passing through the village an old pack horse bridge spans Wycoller Beck from beyond which the first site of wycoller hall comes into view.Interestingly the twin arched bridge is also known as Sally’s Bridge named after Sally Owen, mother of the last squire Henry Owen Cunliffe. / In her walks across the moors from Haworth,Charlotte Bronte was a regular visitor to the area and it is considered by many that Wycoller Hall was the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in the famous novel Jane Eyre.Once an imposing structure wycoller hall is now a ruin said to be haunted by two ghosts, one a headless horse man said to ascend the now missing stairs on full moon lit nights and the other a lady dressed in black seen at a window. In Chapter XXXVII of the novel Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë wrote / “The manor-house of Ferndean was a building of considerable antiquity, moderate size, and no architectural pretensions, deep buried in a wood. Even when within a very short distance of the manor-house, you could see nothing of it, so thick and dark grew the timber of the gloomy wood about it. Iron gates between granite pillars showed me where to enter, and passing through them, I found myself at once in the twilight of close-ranked trees. There was a grass-grown track descending the forest aisle between hoar and knotty shafts and under branched arches.” / When viewing the hall on an downcast autumn day it is easy to relate to Charlottes description.

  • The hill stands at 1827 ft and varies in width from one to three miles. The top offers breathtaking views across the Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales and on clear days, the Lake District. / The historical relevance of Pendle Hill gives it a bleak and eerie quality. It was used as a burial ground in the Bronze age and a 7,000 year old burial mound can be found on the top. More recently in the 17th century the events which led to the hanging of the Pendle Witches took place. The evidence against them was hardly conclusive, but nonetheless a considerable mythology has grown up around the witches, whose memory is perpetuated by a hilltop gathering each Halloween. Downham is a village and civil parish in Lancashire, England. It is in the Ribble Valley district and as of the United Kingdom 2001 census has a population of 156. The village is on the north side of Pendle Hill. / The village is part of the Assheton Estate owned by the Lord and Lady Clitheroe, and the owners do not allow overhead electricity lines, aerials or satellite dishes, making the village a popular location for filming period dramas. Downham was one of the locations used in the 1961 film Whistle Down the Wind, and the series Born and Bred, set in the fictional village of Ormston, was also filmed in the village. When I decided to start delving into my ancestry I had no idea that it would take me back to my great, great, grandfather who was born in 1817 and lived in a tiny thatched cottage halfway up the side of bare and bleak Pendle Hill. On a cold March day, I could only imagine the hardships that the family must have endured and I wondered how they were affected by stories handed down of the famous Pendle Witch Trials of 1612.

  • Pendle’s Panopticon, ‘Atom’, rests on the hillside above Wycoller village in Wycoller Country Park. Constructed in ferro-cement with a surface coating of metal-based paint, it is both a striking contemporary viewing point and shelter from which to enjoy Pendle’s glorious scenery, and an intriguing and beautiful object which can be viewed from afar. From inside, its circular viewing spaces frame spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, and an initially hidden, polished steel ball reflects back those views to the visitor.
