The giant karri trees of south west Western Australia dwarf Betty as we do this wonderful forest walk at Pemberton, some 350 kms south of Perth. The karri is the world’s third tallest growing tree and can attain heights of 90 metres plus. These in the photo are comparatively small, being around 75 metres! The karri, by the way, is a plant
You wouldn’t expect to find a dam in the middle of a karri forest, but there’s one here! We are at Pemberton, in the south west of Western Australia some 340 kms south of Perth. Pemberton is THE centre to visit when you want to explore the magnificent forests of giant Karri and Jarrah trees. This scene is Big Brook Dam and, if you look closely, you can just make out a beach, which makes it the perfect spot for locals wishing to cool off after a hot day. There is a very good, level walk all around the dam – a distance of some 4+ kms.
Taken in the beautiful Karri Forests in the South of Western Australia.
Pemberton is a small timber town in the south west of Western Australia about 350 kms from Perth and this scene is barely half a kilometre outside town. It was taken quite early one morning in late spring and there was still a little bit of mist rising from the damp grass and a nearby – out of shot – dam.
Actually this is not at the main part of the cascades but it’s a scene that I prefer. It is just out of Pemberton and in the heart of our state’s karri forests some 360kms south of Perth, Western Australia. The time to visit is during spring after the customary heavy winter rains _ and you also get the benefit of the area’s wonderful wildflowers as a bonus!

This old crane is sitting in the Pemberton railway yards and has been left to rust away.
This swing bridge is part of the loop walk at Beedelup Falls near Pemberton. The bridge did move a fair bit when I was crossing it, something my wife did not enjoy!
Big Brook Dam supplies the water needs of the small West Australian country town of Pemberton, some 330 kms south of Perth. Pemberton is in the heart of our state’s karri forests and, with the abolition of old growth logging, has become a mecca for tourists, with no less than three climbing trees in the area posing a challenge to the brave! / The dam is also popular with the locals as a swimming spot during hot summer days and the local shire council have constructed a wonderful, level walking/cycling trail around it’s entire perimeter – something like 3 or 4 kms. We were on the walk when I spotted this sheltered cove, where there were actually a couple of people sunbathing. / We have also done this same walk during spring when the acacias and hardenbergias provide a most wonderful array of colours. / Camera Sony Alpha 350 dslr / 18-70 lens with nd filter / f 5.6 @ 1/60 sec / hand held

Offers views across the park. * THE CASCADES—Easy 1.2 km, 30 minute loop crossing the Lefroy Brook and The Cascades. * GLOUCESTER TREE WALK—Moderate 3 km walk from Pemberton Townsite to the Gloucester Tree. * GLOUCESTER ROUTE—Moderate 10 km walk that leads over hills and down gullies to hidden creeks and waterfalls. * GLOUCESTER TREE TO CASCADES WALK—12 km, return featuring Eastbrook Valley, karri forest and views.” / Source: Dept Environment and Conservation I don’t know which walk we were on as we weren’t carrying a map, but it was probably the Gloucester Route as we were certainly travelling down hills and gullies which were taking us further and further downwards rather than back to our starting point, so, rather than get lost we turned back the way we came. At this time of year (October/November) the walks are an absolute delight with an array of native plants in flower. Click here to visit my Red Bubble Site gallery and view by category.
