  • Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Eye See You This Pelican at Monkey Mia, Western Australia, was very different from the ones I had seen before (Australian Pelican). Have included some information regarding the Australian Pelican: The Australian Pelican Australia’s largest flying bird, the pelican has a wingspan of 3.5m and the world’s longest bill at 47cm, with an expandable pouch to hold fish. They forage day and night, alone or in groups, driving fish into the shallows and catching them with their bills. They roost on mudbanks and islands, fluttering their pouch skin to keep cool. They sometimes migrate long distances, flying in loose V formation or in line, soaring up to 3,000m high. They nest in colonies on islands and the chicks gather in groups. Their diet consists of fish and crustaceans. They inhabit fresh and saline lakes, rivers and swamps.

  • Florida Brown Pelican and Cormorants hang out on the old pilings that once supported an old structure known as the Ice House at the entrance to Pirates Cove in Charlotte Harbour near Punta Gorda.

  • This is an acrylic canvas painting 20” wide x 23” long of Australian Pelicans. Pelicans are beautiful large Black and White water birds. They have very long beaks that have a small hook on the end and a stretching pouch underneath. There are 7 species of Pelicans in the world. Pelicans fly just above the water’s surface in long lines and never dive. Growing up as a child I can remember my Grandfather singing to us…. “Oh a wonderous bird is the Pelican his beak holds more than his belican!” This was painted as a birthday present for a friend of mine who is turning 50 this weekend and her favourite bird is a Pelican. This song is “A Chair in the Sky” from the inspired Mingus jazz album Joni Mitchell released in 1979. She was accompanied by a Genius roll-call of jazz talent including / Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Peter Erskine, Don Alias, and Emil Richards. Mingus was terminally ill, though partook in the recording, dying just two days prior to the final song coming together. It was a treat in so many ways to visit the zoo last week, but there is a sadness at the same time to such visits. Hence, I especially love the line in this song that I have used as the title.

  • Chuck Gardner asked if I happened to get any photos the pelicans while I was in Newport. I was in Newport, Oregon at the Yaquina Head LIghthouse (Newport Oregon) taking photos when this man came over to me and said I should take photos of this pelican since my lens could zoom in on it real well. So being the proud photographer that I am….I had to go take a few shots of this guy. I love his feathers. The pelican was just perched on a ledge way above the ocean.
