Part 2 … the part that comes after the first part in my ongoing review of the Canon 40D. What a big journey the last four days has been. I unpacked my Canon 40D on Friday and by Monday I had seen ducks mating … joined a protest rally … rescued starfish on a beach … met Santa on the side of a road … become a horse whisperer and joined a flock of Pelicans!. How wonderful my world is with the Canon 40D. Every day I feel a sense of excitement and wonder at all that is around me. It is as if my eyes have been opened and I am seeing everything for the first time. After initially taking 960+ photos of ducks, then finding another duck pond and taking a few hundred more, I have decided that I am over the duck phase in my life. It was fleeting .. it was frenzied …but its over and you can rest assured that I won’t be loading thousands of photos of ducks on to my RB account. (SFX: Collective sigh of relief) However my new obsession is the Pelican – nature’s own stand up comedian ! (SFX: Canned laughter) I am so in love with the Pelican that I have even joined a fan club and begun to sing a favourite rhyme … (Fade in theme music …) A wonderful bird is the pelican, / His bill can hold more than his belican. / He can take in his beak / Enough food for a week; / But I’m damned if I know how the helican. author unknown Here are just a few of my Pelican shots, unpolished, straight from the camera using a 17-85mm lens. If you don’t like these, don’t worry, I have hundreds more LOL. / I have now read past the first “tick the boxes” page in the 40D manual. The technical stuff is still all gobbledygook but the sample pictures are nice :-D Darren was right, it is a steep learning curve … but I’ll get there. / Cheers Sooz

My feet are cut from jumping on shell encrusted rocks … my legs scratched and bruised from sliding down a rocky embankment … pants soaking wet from looking through the camera and not where I was going … my hair matted from blowing in the damp salty wind. I am a mess ! Yet I am also content after spending another two days up the Coast where the Pelicans live. On the Coast we met salt of the earth fishermen who taught our children to fish and told us stories about the Pelicans. They are also locally known as sea turkeys because one Christmas a local guy got done for selling them off as turkey meat. One bite was all it took to know you had been had lol. So it didn’t take long for the coppers to catch up with him. There is a code among the local fishermen not to feed the “greedy bastards” because if you do, they’ll never leave you alone. They’ll swim between your legs and steal the fish right off your hook. While we were there I was captivated by their antics. They certainly are comedians and seemed to take pleasure in annoying the fishermen and posing proudly for visiting tourists (while at the same time, cleverly eyeing off their unattended lunch). I am addicted to Pelican watching. With well over two thousand images (probably closer to three as I have already begun sorting and deleting) I have no idea what I am going to do with them. Have I lost my mind? Is this a temporary condition associated with the joy of playing with a new camera? Will it be fleeting like my previous addiction to duck watching? Or is this a new life long obsession that will haunt me into old age? I am now having visions of myself as a haggard old lady with feathers in her tangled hair, skin weathered from the salty air, hunched back and smelling of rotting fish – the special treats for my feathered “friends”. School children will probably taunt me with rhymes … The Pelican lady is a funny old chook / Hair like seaweed and nose like a hook / She looks like a witch in her faded old clothes / And everyone can smell her, wherever she goes I will try hard to resist the urge to post thousands of pelican photos on to RB. It will be tough as this is a serious addiction. So please be kind to me as I load a few more for a second Pelican calendar. And pray that this is only a passing phase. Sooz / x / /

The gorgeous Ginger Barritt purchased Percy enjoyed his walk before breakfast / / And an anonymous pelican lover purchased a Pelican Parade Calendar. / / Both sales were a much appreciated surprise. Thank you so much. With two pelican sales, this can mean only one thing ….. I am going to upload more pelican shots as I have a couple of thousand to choose from. ROFL. So please forgive me if pelicans are not your thing. The pelican phase will be over soon – I promise LOL . Hopefully next year I will stop fooling around and get serious about creating some art. Till then, thank you for your friendship this year. Have a safe and happy holiday season. Love Sooz / x
