ceiling detail of the Basilica Minore de San Sebastian in Manila, Philippines. in the 1970’s, chinese-american architect i.m. pei heard of a story that a church in the philippines was built of steel and that gustave eiffel (of eiffel tower and statue of liberty fame) had designed it. architect i m pei then arranged a trip to the philippines and visited san sebastian church in manila. he later confirmed that the church structure was in fact designed by eiffel. it was a great honor for me to have actually stepped into san sebastian and stood in awe at the magnificence of the interior. pity that the philippine government does not completely comprehend the significance of this historical site. this is just the first image of the interior of the church. more to come soon.
