Its all in the title. This isn’t just an ordinary Church Spire. I am told its a copy of the Spire at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. This is actually what I would consider the most prominant landmarks in Peebles. Peebles is a small Scottish Borders Town which lies about 20 miles south west of Edinburgh. Its possibly my most popular image to date out here in the real world. Made the Redbubble Home Page on the 29th of August 2008. Caught ‘up the sware’ (a local viewpoint) at dawn yesterday ( 23/9/08) as the sun rose over the tweed valley just outside Peebles, scottish borders. I travel on this road 5 days a week as I head to & from work. On this morning the lighting was so good I stopped several times to take snaps. This is one of the snaps taken that morning. Water – the most precious resource on the planet – is something we so take for granted in Scotland… what so many people all over the globe would give for even this supply….... I soaked my entire jeans leg taking this as i was kneeling in the swampy run-off from the fields on the hillside above but only noticed later when the freezing march cold began to bite! It’s amazing to me that the sky and clouds can be seen reflected in the flow! A lovely tranquil woodland setting for this rustic bench (at Kailzie gardens, near Peebles in the scottish borders) surrounded by wonderful spring flowers like blue himalayan poppies, pink and bluebells, daisies and yellow celandine… while the nearby stream trickles down through the glade of colourful azaleas…. For a closeup of the blue poppies see himalayan blue taken in my garden (not this one ..lol!))

Neidpath is a wonderful 13C castle on the banks of the Tweed near Peebles in the lovely scottish borders and a fascinating link here explains more of the history of this special place….) It was attacked in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell who demolished the early tower by cannon fire from the hillside across the river during a seige. / A watercolour depiction of the roundheads siege by the very talented local artist Jack Roney (1920 – 2005) is reproduced below with permission of his family (sorry about the flash on glass ) The castle has an ancient well and pit prison and is also said to be haunted by the ghost of Jean Douglas, referred to by Sir Walter Scott as the Maid of Neidpath in a heartrending poem. The story goes that Jean, youngest daughter of the Earl of March. was forbidden to marry her love who was considered below her station, and she pined while her lover was sent away. When he returned she was so wasted and changed that he didnt recognise her, causing her to die of a broken heart. :(( how sad is that…..:(( She’s said to appear in a full-length brown dress with a large white collar….
