‘Inspired Series’ card by Karin Taylor Mixed media production on paper, ink, pastel, charcoal and acrylic. Pilgrimage is about our passage through life, the boat represents the vehicle by which she travels, the wise animal represents the voice of wisdom, the bare tree represents a brand new slate on which to write each day, the crown speaks of how special each individual is. Pearls represent the tears of the moon and remind us that life may not be easy and we all struggle. The lotus represents strength through love. The daisies are for simplicity. The bindi is for spiritual insight. This is a card to encourage.

It has been a long time since I took some self portraits. The act of self portraiture is a fascinating one. Your model is always available when you are, she is as keen about your ideas and as enthusiastic about creating them as you too. She waits patiently as you play with your camera and light and dress the set. She fits into all your costumes. I love the responsibility that comes with self portraiture- that I am the idea, the production, the product. I can’t blame anyone else for the finished work being ruined or imperfect. But I also love that recklessness and sense of abandon. That I can throw myself into an image however feels natural and right and good. It’s like singing on stage blind.

When Paul Vanzella told me he was shooting with Sarah, I bought, begged and stole my way into that shoot. And who could blame me! I was there as a second model and helping out with styling but I couldn’t resist firing off a couple of snaps while Paul and Sarah were doing their thing.
