PDF files are invaluable if you run your own business. Query letters, contracts and other important documentation look a lot more professional in PDF format, rather than bulky Word documents which can be accidentally changed with the slip of a key-press. Many professionals also promote their businesses via PDF e-Books that you can dowload from their websites, containing images and hyperlinks. However, Adobe products, although excellent, are prohibitively expensive. A commercial copy of Adobe Acrobat is around AUD$600. Ow. I’ve found an excellent substitute developed by Broadgun, an Australian company based in Victoria. pdfMachine is only USD$29. I purchased pdfMachine office, and have found it more than adequate for my needs. I use it fairly often and it’s a pretty solid product. Support is top-notch and any queries receive a prompt response from the developers, so you can be sure that they know the product inside out. I don’t get any kickbacks, but I thought you guys would be interested to hear about it – I don’t think there are many millionaires on RB and this is a great Australian product.

  • I’m gonna publish a pdf-based magazine that contains a couple of my works for a website, and I know I have to make a REALLY strong impression, so I kind of tried to make a traditional looking book cover that includes title, and name and an image (ps. that was after I had drawn a couple of drafts which would have taken me too much time to accomplish). The template is basically a rip-off of penguin twentieth-century classics (speaking of which, have anyone read Myra Breckenridge by Gore Vidal?? Crazy crazy stuff!!!); as for the title, well, obviously it refers to the members of all my Energetic Babes who are kind of like a big family to me. :P

  • Showing off your Calendars - Part II
    by John Barratt

I recently added a journal entry on how to show off your calendars by embedding the individual preview images for the cover & each month here . Last Friday we released some new functionality to allow you to preview your calendar via a downloadable pdf file. This gives another way of being able to publically show your calendar, and potentially via different means. If like before, you go into mybubble -> calendars -> edit calendar -> buy/preview then you should now see a link below your preview image saying “You can download a reduced-quality PDF preview here”. Here is a link to my snow calendar as a PDF, the same one as in the previous journal article. This is a file of only a few MB that can be downloaded and saved or opened up in acrobat reader. Note that this is low quality preview only, it does not have the full detail of the final printed version. The idea here is it gives you a little more detail than the standard web preview, and allows for your whole calendar to be conveniently ‘shared’ in one file. So, you can copy that link (right click in your browser and select the appropriate option) and then do things like embed it in your journal entries, add it to emails, or put it on other websites as you would like. You could also attach the saved pdf to an email, and send it directly to an friends or family that may be interested in seeing/buying your calendar.

So I have been plotting out a horror ezine for the last while and I finally put my foot down and want to do it. / The zine is going to be free and probably do a new issue every 2-3 months. PDF format, color. Is there anyone on RedBubble that would like to get in on it? / I’d be looking for poetry, short stories, editorials, game-movie-book reviews, art tutorials, art to post in it, maybe a bio focus on a horror artist or writer…just about anything. / Got a book or game you want to pimp up? that’s fine too, all so long as its horror. Drop me a msg here, or PM and let me know, I’d let to get the first issue material together as soon as possible so I can do the setup and get it out. Cheers forum post

  • Thinking of selling cards, well how good does your card look and while we're at it what about the other products

I keep coming across beautiful images and cards that I would love to buy but I am put off of some that have words or borders because when I check them in the preview the borders are uneven or the wording is cut off. It is due to the small crop that Red Bubble does when printing them out. I am also reluctant to buy cards of images that are not the right size and you end up with them looking lost in card format. I am guilty of this myself and have been going through my large gallery and amending them. I have therefore rounded up what I hope will help us get them right. Knowledge Base: cropping and borders / We want your images to look amazing for your customer, and how you intended. The products have been designed to make your images look their best without the needing to add borders on your image files. The production of some products will require a small crop of 1-2mm but this is mostly unnoticeable. When making a purchase, the previews that you see on RedBubble should accurately reflect how the image will be positioned and cropped so use these as a guide For cards aspect ratio matters which is about 3:2 Here are the resolution thresholds for each of our products: Greeting Cards: 1300×900 pixels (1 megapixel) Matted Prints: 1800×1260 pixels (2.5 megapixels) Laminated, Mounted and Framed Prints and Stretched Canvas: / o 2400×1600 pixels (4 megapixels) for the small print / o 3240×2160 pixels (7 megapixels) for the medium print / o 3840×2560 pixels (10 megapixels) for the large print Posters: / o 2500×3500 pixels for the smallest print / o 3500×5000 pixels for the medium print / o 5000×7100 pixels for the large print Calendar images: 2182×1906 pixels for the months and 2371×2875 pixels for the cover Clothing: exactly 2400×3200 pixels (and the file must be a PNG). Notes Please do not manually change the pixel dimensions of your image. We use the number of pixels in an image to determine which sizes are appropriate – if you change the pixel dimensions you will trick our quality control software – but the products will come out looking blocky and horribly pixelated. If your image size or format is not right, this might restrict you from selling some products. We automatically determine which products your file can be used to create, so that we only ship products that both you and we can be proud of. Images above 60Mb, or 10,000×10,000 pixels in size, cannot be accepted on the site due to the unreasonable load they place on our servers. If you’re uploading files larger than 20MB they should probably be compressed or scaled down a bit — we don’t print billboards yet! File Format / We accept JPEG or PNG files (we don’t accept TIFF or PDF files). Colour Profile / We prefer the sRGB colour space (our printers are calibrated to sRGB). All of the above tips were found around Red Bubble I hope this helps, I thought thast having the info in one place would be helpful as I had to search around for it all If you do need to amend an image, no need to delete and upload afresh, just amend your image with your software and upload new version under the original in my bubble…....... / art…....... / and / using the change this image function under edit PLEASE check out this link too

  • Critiques please...on 2 Magazine layouts in PDF

Dear Friends, Looking for comments and critiques on these first versions of Inside Solo in PDF format. MAGAZINE DOWNLOADS Inside Solo, Vol 10 – pdf (3.4 MB) ISSUE w/Amanda Rae / Alt: Inside Solo, vol 10, RB/HTML version Inside Solo, Vol 11 – pdf (2.9 MB) ISSUE w/Ruth Palmer / Alt: Inside Solo, vol 11, RB/HTML version I’m not sure if PDF embeds the fonts or substitutes your fonts for missing ones used in the original layout. If it substitutes, you might see some funkiness INSIDE THE ISSUE; and I’d like you to report that to me. Hints would be unfinished lines, type that’s too big, etc. Don’t worry about saying something that might appear negative in this journal. I opened up this thread just for that, and I would rather know now, so that future issues have the benefit of your insight. Please let me know, if there’s anything else that doesn’t seem quite right, or could be improved. Thank you in advance. On another note, I can’t tell you how happy I am that these issues are out. It’s a big deal for me to put something out that, for me, isn’t perfect. A big deal. Thanks for your support and thanks to the contributing writers and artists we celebrate. Forgive me for not responding to these comments immediately. I’m taking the weekend to do some web application programming, then will open Ruth Palmer’s Solo Exhibition, here, Monday. If you have not caught Amanda Rae’s show yet, it’s on through the weekend. You can see her 12 Featured works up close and catch Amanda Rae’s discussion of her work in conversation with Solo members, plus many more of her works, here, in her Reception Gallery.

Learn how to publish a great photographic magazine and how to sell it… Derek Powazek’s guide to compiling a printed magazine in a little over a day contains plenty of sage advice. For Strange Light he curated 54 photographs of last month’s dust storm in Sydney, and offers insight into the process of approaching photographers to seek permission to use their work. The resulting publication is for sale on MagCloud for just enough to cover printing costs… Really a great article and worth to read and learn how to publish and sell own magazines online… Read also: PROMOTE YOURSELF COOL…! or Use the impact of a new SHARE BUTTON to promote your work… or My wallart feature at the PUMA RUNNING website…

Its my great pleasure to announce that my first poetry compilation is now available as an Ebook. If you go to my RB Profile Page you can read a short blurb about The Black Kite, a no-frills collection of over 80 poems and short narratives. It is available for $10AUD and I will email it to you as a PDF doc (123 pages). It is very much a “just the facts” book, it contains no introduction or table of contents etc. It is just the written work. It is a stepping stone toward producing a more detailed and professional self-published book which I am researching how to do presently. It is a small but significant step on my path as a writer, as pooling one’s work, editing etc. is a process I procrastinate with but after a couple of months I now have something (kinda) tangible. Happy days :-) / Jim. PS… If you would really like a copy but can’t afford it right now, or don’t do online payments, please send me a bmail.
