I love its simplicity, its beauty, the colors and softness of focus. It makes me realize anew the wonder of nature. Every spring when I look at my garden starting to grow I am reminded of how wonderful nature is. How can this be? How can something so delicate break through the hard ground and grow to something so beautiful? This photograph moved me to spring and its wonder. As much as I identify with the artists inspiration behind this piece, I also believe that his powerful imagery of intense anguish and torment stands up so well on its own, without title or explaination. For me, that makes it a truly exceptional artwork. / / TrEaSuReDiMaGeS / / / / Chose this piece as her all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Snake Hunter By bobbymcleod / / Debs said about this image / / This is my all time favorite piece on redbubble. This was a very difficult choice to make!!! I have such a passion and love for nature but most of all……the birds of prey. So I gravitated in that direction. The piece I chose is of a bird of prey. It’s titled “Snake Hunter” by bobbymcleod. I love this brilliant shot and have chosen this to be my favorite. One reason being, that you don’t see many shots of these eagles. And secondly, these eagles like so many birds of prey……. have such power/determination in their eyes and they are just so incredibly beautiful!! Bobby has captured all of those elements in his brilliant photo of this stunning Bateleur Eagle. / / Colin Tobin / / / / Chose this piece as his all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Carousel By Deborah Parkin / / Colin said about this image / / It looks like many people here had a difficult time selecting just one all time favorite image. I am glad to say that for me it was incredibly simple. Carousel, by Deborah Parkin was actually the first thing I favorited when I joined this site. Carousel is an extremely poignant image for me. As a child I had several irrational fears and this image reminds me of the way I viewed the world back then: with an extreme sense of wonder and curiosity, clouded by caution and anxiety. Carousel speaks to me in a way that no other photo on Redbubble does. / / Dave Warren / / / / Chose this piece as his all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Bedtime By Richard Shepherd / / Dave said about this image / / This is such a beautiful haunting image that I look at time and time again and every time I do, I expect to see an old person come on to the image to get his shoes, i just love it! / / funkyfacestudio / / / / Chose this piece as her all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Ibrahim of Arabia By AL Neaimi / / Lisa said about this image / / This was a wow ! photograph for me, It is perfect in so many ways that it almost seems like a fantasy……too many adjectives to describe it. / / randi1972 / / / / Chose this piece as his all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Secret Journey By Randy Monteith / / Randi1972 said about this image / / I think it is the most creative and moving pieces of art that I have ever seen. / franziska p / / / / Chose this piece as her all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Frecled Flower By Veronica Pisica / / franziska said about this image / / I simply love how surreal this photo is, and how veronica created this surrealism with only a few simple elements. the picture seems like a b&w portrait, but it’s a very special way of portraiture. / / Judith Winde / / / / Chose this piece as her all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / They Come And Go By Paul Tupman / / Judith said about this image / / would like to submit my selection of the photo that made the biggest impact on me, and that is “They Come and Go” by Paul Tupman.. Having been to Stonehenge and experiencing the mysticism of its existence, seeing the enormity of the stones, and marveling at the monumental spirit and drive it took for whoever it was that constructed this wonder, I couldn’t imagine being able to convey the essence of Stonehenge with a photograph, but Paul Tupman proved me wrong. To me, his photo is truly a masterpiece! / / Aloramyst / / / / Chose this piece as her all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Lotus By Jarko / / Aloramyst said about this image / / This is an amazing piece of artwork that stirs my soul. The textures, the depth of colors, and the raw beauty of being a woman. I relate to it in many ways. The model is a brunette who shows strength of character, and empowerment. It makes a bold strong statement, yet is subdued with the soft colors. Can’t say enough about it. I love it! Kim Roper / / / / Chose this piece as her all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Josh And His Bear By Annette Blattman / / Kim said about this image / / This piece evokes the wonder and innocence of childhood, the colours and tones are wonderful, and the silhouette of the boy and his bear create mood and atmosphere! / / Jan Piller / / / / Chose this piece as her all time favorite piece of art on Redbubble / / / Blue Tent In The Early Morning Mist By bertspix / / Jan said about this image / / The mood in this image is to die for!!!

  • Photographers - What are you paying for? (Part One)

Disclaimer: This is not legal advice or even professional advice. This is some stuff I’ve learned along this funny little thing called life and may not apply in any way to your current situation. At worst, it’s my opinion, at best it’s some ideas for you to think about. If you need real proper advice, go see your solicitor. I’m of the opinion that photography should make me money, not cost me money. So far, I have been successful is making more from a photograph than it took me to create. Here is my list of not so secret tips and advice on covering your arse and saving your cash. When To Pay There are times where spending your hard earned money is the right choice. For example to obtain goods or services you can not find for less (or free) elsewhere. Or when you have done all the maths yourself and you feel you are buying into a good deal. But there are also some pit falls to watch out for. Art Direction, Ideas and Intellectual Property My rule of thumb, if I am paying to shoot, I should have full rights to everything I take. No ifs buts or maybes about it. If you shoot a commercial, the art direction team put together a shoot and then hire a photographer to take photos of what they and the crew have created. They pay for lighting design, they pay the models, they pay the hair stylist, they pay the guy who makes the coffees- and they pay the photographer. Some businesses operate under a similar model but suck money out of photographers in the process. As part of a ‘workshop’ or ‘event’, several photographers rock up with their cameras and take photos of a scene. Often they have little or no control of the setup, can’t communicate properly with the models and will walk out of it with similar images to everyone else who attended! In the worst cases they have restricted rights regarding how they use their images. So is essence, they have paid for something that out in the real world, would be making them money. Sorry if it sounds confusing, the concept completely baffles me. When you are shooting someone else’s ideas and have restricted publishing rights or have little influence over the set up, posing, lighting or set design, (in my opinion) you should be getting paid by them. After all, you are doing them a favor by taking images of their creative work. Classes or Tuition Wanting to improve you skills and knowledge is a great thing. And there are numerous classes, mentors and workshops available for you to choose from. If you are going to pay to attend these, make sure you are getting what you pay for. Before you hand over any cash there are a few details that you should have to help make your decision. Class Size: The more people attending, the cheaper the class should be. If there is a practical component, I usually wont accept a class bigger than 10-12 / Location & Time: no point signing up for an ‘on location’ workshop only to find it is out of your way. Also as a safety issue, you should always be able to tell a trusted person exactly where and when you will be shooting. / The Teacher: You should be able to find and contact the person facilitating the class to verify their experience and ask questions. It not always convenient for a facilitator to take calls from a whole class, but you should be able to send them an email and get a reply without going through a middle man. / Contracts: Ask if you will need to sign any contracts and insist upon receiving them before paying. / What do you get: do you get class notes to take home? Exactly what does the course entail? What can you hope to know and have learned at the end of the course? Contracts These are a great way to waste your money. They also happen to be very important. First and foremost contracts exists to make people money or stop people from making money. So before signing anything, read it a few times and make sure you are aware of what your actions are costing you. If you need to get images approved before sale or publication, you could be agreeing to never publishing or selling any images taken if none are ‘approved.’ It is completely reasonable to request changes to a contract or write your own and offer it instead. Don’t sign away potential income! You should always be able to take a contract away and show it to other people for advice before signing it, and especially before paying for anything. If you are not given this opportunity, my advice is to avoid it with a ten foot pole. And then there are the bazillion poorly written contracts that mean very little or nothing at all. It’s actually quite funny to me sometimes, what people will put on paper. Useful Links Australian Competition & Consumer Commission / Scam Watch Photographers – What are you paying for (part 2).

We all have artists on our watchlist that we think are wonderful, but who may not get the recognition they deserve or their work just gets passed by in the influx of daily work here on Redbubble. I would like to form a journal entry here that serves the purpose of bringing awareness and traffic to these underappreciated artists, so my proposal is that anyone who wished to come into this journal and post 1 or 2 links to artists on their watchlists whom they absolutely adore. This idea was originally begun by JULIE LANGFORD so please be sure to visit her journal HERE too for more amazing work! Also feel free to link to their images as well, and try not to repeat the same artists as have already been mentioned and promoted. This way we can get the word out about so many of these tremendous hidden talents here at Redbubble. I have two artists I would now like to introduce to you that I have on my watchlist: David Linkenauger and Shelley Spillenaar David is one of my fellow home state photographers and takes really nice waterscape images, and Shelley in my mmind has a wonderful eye and a keen sense of capturing the right moment with animals. Please go take a look at the wonderful work of these two artists, and if you like what you see be sure to tell them so and maybe even add them to your watchlist! Also, be sure to scan your own watchlist for someone who you think deserves more attention than they are currently getting in the world of Redbubble! Let’s make this a huge success!

Be open minded about your camera gear You can make a tripod for only a few dollars...

Be open minded about your camera gear You can make a tripod for only a few dollars, tracing paper makes a great diffuser and a trip to a hardware store will give you very bright lights. Yes, there are downsides, and for the technically perfect photographer, these suggestions will be a very funny joke. The point here is keep and open mind and try new things before forking out $100 for a piece of shiny material that resembles a $5 dash board cover. Unless you use a biscuit tin to take photos, eventually you will want to buy a new camera. Shop around, get advice, try out a friend’s and when you walk into the shop, don’t spend hundreds of dollars on accessories that you wont’ use. It doesn’t hurt to haggle a bit either. When the salesman tries to close the deal, my typical response is “what else are you throwing in?” Studio Hire So the first question you ask yourself is “Do I know anyone who already has a studio set up?” If the answer is yes. Skip the rest of this section, suck up your pride and ask them if you can visit and have a play. The rest of you, ask yourself what you are paying for. Is it the chance to get a professionally lit shot? Maybe you could try a lighting course that will not only give you many opportunities to work with professional lights, but will teach you the theory and science of lighting. Often these courses are much cheaper than a similar amount of time in a rented studio. Do you want to try shooting in more controlled conditions? Try clearing out a room of your house and setting up a few scenes. The results may not be brilliant but it will give you a sense of how much time you can spend setting a shot up before you get to click the button. If you are certain that a proper studio is for you, consider hiring it out through a camera club for a discounted rate, or hiring it out with a couple of other photographers to minimise your expense. Models and TFP Models and photographers have one thing in common – they both need a portfolio of photos to proceed in their career. This is why Time For Photo shoots have become so popular. But before you jump up and down about using a free model take a second think about what is fair and ethical. At the end of the day, both you and the model should be happy with your arrangement. If someone feels short changed, you should consider modifying your approach. This is my rule of thumb. If a model approaches me to take shots for her portfolio, and I am working to her brief, she should pay me. If we have put our heads together to come up with a project and proceed on equal footing where we both use the images, then neither should pay. And if I conceive and art direct the shoot and have priority over the image rights, I should pay the model. Basically whoever comes out on top should be paying the person who is doing them a favor. Then there are test shoots, these are almost always done on a time for photos basis. These shoots are a bit like ‘warm up’ shoots for the model and photographer to see if they want to work together properly. They are also a chance to test new ideas or equipment. Often the images taken in test shoots are less than great, and if they do turn out, they are most commonly shared equally between all parties. If you are requesting a model release form because you intend to profit from the images, in my opinion, the model should be paid or you should have an arrangement to split any profits. My plan of attack is to put out a call for models. Then I will do a test shoot with the model who has contacted me and we either have equal rights to the shots or split them down the middle. If the test shoot goes well we may arrange to work together again. This might mean doing an even split of “her ideas” and “my ideas” for no payment, or it may be paid work if I am contracted to produce shots for a commercial job. “The finest gift you can give anyone is encouragement. Yet, almost no one gets the encouragement they need to grow to their full potential. If everyone received the encouragement they need to grow, the genius in most everyone would blossom and the world would produce abundance beyond the wildest dreams. Sometimes it’s kids, women, prisoners of war in slave labour camps often policed by child solders (kidnapped and indoctrinated into killing): Coltan in the Congo The Congo is a politically unstable area. The Rwandan occupation in the east of the Congo has meant the DRC has been unable to exploit the resource for its own benefit. A 2003 UN Security Council report8 charged that a great deal of the ore is mined illegally and smuggled over the country’s eastern borders by militias from neighbouring Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda.[9] Coltan smuggling has also been implicated as a major source of income for the military occupation of Congo. An activist website, Toward Freedom, states that the search for coltan has fueled a brutal conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo; they state that demand for coltan has caused Rwandan military groups and western mining companies to seek hundreds of millions of dollars worth of the rare metal, often by forcing prisoners-of-war and even children to work in the country’s coltan mines. [10] To many, this raises ethical questions akin to those of conflict diamonds. Owing to the difficulty of distinguishing legitimate from illegitimate mining operations, several electronics manufacturers have decided to forgo central African coltan altogether, relying on other sources.[citation needed] The high-tech industry’s demand for tantalum clearly has fueled an increase in coltan mining worldwide – including in the Congo region. Toward Freedom states that the 2000 launch of the Sony PS2 required a large increase in production of electric capacitors, which are primarily made with tantalum, which greatly increased the world price of the powder from $49/pound to a $275/pound, resulting in accelerated mining of the Congolese hills containing coltan. Sales in computers, mobile phones, and DVD players spiked around this same time. Sony claims it has discontinued its use of tantalum acquired from the Congo, and sourced it from a variety of mines in several different countries. Researcher David Barouski states “The coltan ore trades hands so many times from when it is mined to when SONY gets a processed product, that a company often has no idea where the original coltan ore came from, and frankly don’t care to know. But statistical analysis shows it to be nearly inconceivable that SONY made all its PlayStations without using Congolese coltan.” [10] All three countries named by the United Nations as smugglers of coltan have denied being involved. Austrian journalist Klaus Werner has documented links between multi-national companies like Bayer and the illegal coltan traffic.[11] Likewise has Johann Hari written on the connections between coltan resources and the genocide in Congo.12 A United Nations committee investigating the plunder of gems and minerals in the Congo listed in its final report8 approximately 125 companies and individuals involved in business activities breaching international norms. Companies accused of irresponsible corporate behavior are for example Cabot Corporation, Eagle Wings Resources International,[14] George Forrest Group15 and OM Group.[16] Also

Julie Langford has curated a remarkable set of images. She asked a whole bunch of folks to select their all time favorite RB image and write a little description as to why … what a great idea Julie! You can read more about it here and this is one of the featured images (by Andrew Bosman):

The recent decision by Radiohead to release their new album with a user decided cost ( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/10/03/bmcolumn103.xml ) has made me wonder about art and its perceived value in general. The media has gone crazy on this story, musing on whether this will effect the future of the music industry in general. Will most people pay for this album and reward the artist, or will they happily consume it as a freebie? Would you pay for something you didn’t have to? Is it just plain stupidity to pay for something you can get for free or is it an ethical question? I think this issue ties in quite nicely with the issue of “security” that comes up on RB occasionally – the idea that consumers can simply right click and save a copy of your art. Early indications from the Radiohead camp say that “most” people are paying for the album. Most! That means that given the choice of freebie or payment, many are choosing to pay for art. I wonder how much this means for us, as artists. Does being fair and allowing the responsibility to rest on the consumer instead of controlling it by restrictions and watermarks, actually make people act ethically!? Why are most people paying? Is Radiohead’s attitude on this point the reason people are choosing to pay? By standing their ground ethically, does this roll over onto the consumer? A kind of contagious morality? I think this makes people think about the value of what they are paying for and receiving. There are always going to be some people who want everything for free and will right click and save your work or download the album for free. But were they ever going to be your buyer?

Hi folks. I am very excited this morning as a brand new group has just been launched. The group is called Pay it Forward and it is a group for people to nominate their favorite [just the one] work from Redbubble. There is a link on the group home page to make those nominations – just join up to do it Now, I know how hard it is to just choose one favorite , its tough, really tough, but it has been done before – lots of times. See this journal for previous Pay It Forwards, which will be appearing in this new group Pay It Forward is a simple, but very effective concept for inspiring people. One person nominates their favorite work, then that work will be invited to the group. We would request that the nominated artist add the details of the pay it forward nomination into the description of that work, so that the artist who nominated it can be recognised as having Paid it Forward. The idea and execution generates large circles of movement, which continuously move forward and around – will it come back to you – it sure will, one way or another. Consider what the artist will feel when you nominate them, how much you have inspired them. Think of the link to your name that people will see each time they view your nominated work – each time they see how much you love it – the concept is huge, and very inspiring for all. So, we have a little work to do – we have all those on the current journal to invite for starters, we have a group avatar to find [feel free to help with the design], and we have big ideas and would welcome your help and feedback. So for now – take a look at the group and the group journal, and be inspired beyond your dreams. Julie and Erin

For those of you not in the know, a wonderful new group has been set up here in Bubbleland called Pay It Forward ... a chance for everyone to nominate and highlight their favourite piece of work on Redbubble. This morning I woke to find a bubblemail stating that my work They Come And Go had been nominated for inclusion by the wonderful Judith Winde Here is what Judith had to say about it… I would like to nominate the photo that made the biggest impact on me, and that is “They Come and Go” by Paul Tupman.. Wow! A BIG Thank You Judith… and in the spirit of Pay It Forward this is what I decided to nominate for inclusion into the group… ...my absolute favourite painting here on Redbubble, Mia by Lee Wilde Quite simply this is a sensational piece of art that you can’t help but fall in love with! I was immediately taken by the simplicity of this image… the unorthodox pose and subtle sex appeal, the stunning range of white through to grey tones, but most of all, that shock of red hair… wow, what a fabulous contrast! The styling and execution of this painting are both masterful… the texturous backdrop and hints of red throughout to compliment the hair all add up to create a wonderful piece of art and leaves you wanting for more. I see the original has been sold… guess I missed out on that one! Enjoy…

MUST READ – eBay international scam warning Well I got home yesterday only to find out an item that was sold on eBay, turns out it was part of an international scam. The story goes like this. A friend of my daughter has an eBay account where he sells things regularly. So he has an established seller rating and a Pay-Pal account already set up. So he offered to put a couple of items up for bid for me for a percentage of the money made. I decided to make Him a better offer. I told him I only wanted $300 for the item so anything above that would be split 3 ways. One third to my daughter one third to my daughter’s boyfriend and the final 33% to my daughters friend for posting the item and getting all the online stuff taken care of. This is where the story goes south. Turns out the guy who posted the item, got a buyer from Nigeria who wanted to buy the item for $500. So greed and stupidity set in. He thought this was great so he got the address for my daughter so she could box and mail out the items. Well the deal between the three of them was that my daughter would pay for shipping and that amount would be subtracted from the $200 then split three ways. It was going to be a nice little payday for such a minimal amount of effort. Well it cost my daughter about $80 to ship it internationally to Nigeria. AFTER the item had already shipped we found out the email he got from Pay-Pal was where the scam started. He got a threatening email from what he thought was Pay-Pal. It said if the item didn’t ship that day they were going to freeze his Pay-Pal account. Without his Pay-Pal account it would be difficult for him to sell his other items. The Pay-Pal email was a fake email. How did he find this out? He wondered why the money wasn’t in is account yet so on Friday he decided to call Pay-Pal. This is when we learned about the scam, they said they never sent the threatening email. So my daughter did a search online and found a blog where other eBay sellers had shipped items to the exact same address in Nigeria. Those people got the exact same threatening email from Pay-Pal. Everything about the scam looked exactly the same. Another huge lesson here, if it seems too good to be real then it just might be. Why am I telling you this? It’s just a warning to other eBay sellers out there, there is a well documented international scam going on. So be careful. I still get a lump in my throat over this one. You see I was going to buy a Tamron 90mm macro lens with that money. I found it online for $399 with free shipping. So close and yet so far looks like the lens has passed through my fingers again. Last time I was so close to getting it I dropped my iPhone and shattered the screen and had to buy a new one. It wasn’t covered by a warranty so I was out the money for a new phone. Someday I will get my lens just not today.

As much as we all hope to get people viewing our work and getting feedback on what we put our blood, sweat and tears into, it dosn’t always happen. I have a great concept that would share the love around. If everytime someone logs onto Red Bubble and visits a minimum of three people and leaves some constructive and insightful comment, it would leave everyone feeling good about their work and having some frame of reference to improve or enhance the way we market ourselves. So if you guys want to start a sought of pay it forward concept I think it would be great. / So the concept is. - if you get a comment on your work, go and view 3 other artists work and leave a comment with each of them. - if you have the time so we get the ball rolling, start leaving three messages everytime you log onto Red Bubble with or without recieving any messages/comments. - When you leave a comment you could suggest to have that person also view one of your images also in that comment. I’d love to know what you guys think of this idea so please leave some feedback for me to go on? / Anyway I shall go and start the avalanche with a pebble or the ripple in the pond. / Thanks all you bubblers out there for taking the time to read this. / Good luck to all and keep spreading the love. / All for one and one for all !!! Its been four months since the Pay It Forward journal hit the Redbubble screens, and with the constant growth and devolpment of the site, I feel it’s time to update it. It currently has 1357 views – that’s a lot of people looking at art. / / So, come on folks, bubblemail me your number one favorite piece of art on Redbubble, and tell me why you love it, so I can bring this wonderful journal back to life for another run. / / I don’t usually add journals to groups, but I have added this one to many, to try and get as many people to come forward as possible with their favorite art. Group hosts, please reject or remove if this journal poses problems by being in your group. Jul

The brand new Pay It Foward Group has been keeping me extremely busy. What little time I have had to spend on the bubble the last week has been dedicated almost 100% to inviting all the Pay It Foward choices from the orginal journal from 7 months ago, and all the new ones that are coming in. Great thanks to Salsbells69 for helping to keep it all afloat in my absence this last week too – Brilliant work Sal! Our other co – hosts are tied up at present, but are eagerly awaiting to get stuck in as well. The sheer volume of nominations that have come in withing just a few days, leaves me speechless! It is so good to see so many people paying forward to their fellow artists here on Redbubble – it is encouraging and leaves one with a sense of completeness at how much good there is in this world. If you want to know how it all works, just go to here and join in the fun :) Jul
