  • Nikon D40, 18-55mm Nikkor lens Thankfully we had dressed warm enough for a short excursion, even though we were headed for the theatre later in the day, but I forgot and put on an old pair of leather gloves that are really not winter appropriate. At one point, my fingers were freezing, mainly due to my taking my hands out of the gloves in order to work the camera, and Wanda, my friend, made me swap with her so that I could wear her warm woolen mittens in between shots. / Friendship is sharing mittens, that’s for sure! / The beauty of this walk left a big impression on me. We barely covered any distance because of the cold and our husbands waiting back at her home, but she wanted me to see what a wonderful area was here in her neighborhood for exploring, and we vowed to come back, dressed appropriately and armed with snowshoes to make the passage easier. • Ive been waiting and waiting to get this particular shot. I wanted the fog so thick the light’s beams would be the only thing coming down over the bike trail located here in Townsend. Many nights I have gone to check out the fog. We finally had some good fog night before last, so off I go, only to realize the light wont exactly shine as I have it pictured in my mind due to the way the light shade is built. So I am settling for this shot. Who knows maybe with thicker fog I can eventually get that shot I have been waiting for. Shot this in Manual Mode set on the Bulb setting. / Fstop set at F 6.3 / Focal Length at 80mm / Exposure time was at 1 sec / ISO was set at 200 / Exposure comp set at 0

  • My first star trail attempt. / While at the Grampians for a few days with family, Neil and I headed out to Lake Fyans after our sunset shoot to do some star trail shots. It was really peaceful and relaxing out there, very surreal. / Even though we were on hardly any sleep, finishing off at 1:30am, and having to be up at 5am the next morning, I think this was worth it. I’ll definitely be trying this again. Canon 40D / Lens: EF-S 10-22mm / Focal Length: 10mm / Shutter Speed: 30 seconds x 114 shots / Aperture: f4.0 / ISO: 800 / Auto White Balance / Format: RAW / Tripod & remote shutter / Drive mode set to Continual Burst / Post Exposure +0.9, sharpening & noise reduction / Converted to JPEG and layered together Full details can be found here in my blog tips

  • First Light reaching the snow covered peak of Mt. Rainier with a meadow of Lupine and Aster unfolding below

  • I wonder where this path leads? During a motorcycle trip to Georgia, I passed by this scene and just had to turn around. The ground fog was just wicked, it was shrouding this path which I presume belongs to a rural farm. Taken with the Nikon D300 and Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens. HDR processing and Orton effect applied, as well as some dodge & burn.

  • 3200 ISO is a brave new world for me. As a self confessed low ISO junkie, one who used Ektar 25 film whenever and wherever he could for many years because I wanted tight grain, the tighter the better, I would pull out all the stops I could to use that amazing ISO 25 film! For sure I’d never gone above ISO 1000 and then only to shoot indoor sporting events. Low ISO was(?) a hang-up for me! But I wanted to try astral photography and high ISO can get you there! However as we all know high ISO leads to increased noise which is something fairly new to me. You can use software and Photoshop plugins but I’ve been considering, one way to control noise would be to minimize or eliminate it by keeping the ISO as low as possible and that’s one way I‘m leaning. So in that regard it looks like a fast 50 prime is in order! It’s fun to be experimenting and learning, eh! Camera Model Canon EOS 50D / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 30 / Av( Aperture Value ) 3.5 / ISO Speed 3200 / Focal Length 18.0mm / Flash at 1/16 power and about 12 or 13 paper towels for diffusion. “One Night Under the Milky Way” was shot at Flamber Head on Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail For more information please visit Brian’s Homepage or on Flickr

  • Photo taken straight out of my camera “As Is”. This was a victory for me hiking this trail. It’s the first time I could actually hike a trail (about 1 mile) without having to stop or turn back. I’ve not been able to hike that long in about 20 years!!! McDowell Creek County Park in Linn County, Oregon.
