This crafty cow threaded its long horns through the barbed wire fence, got down on its knees, and munched the grass just outside its normal reach. Aren’t we a lot like that? Going through all sorts of trouble to grab “something better” when everything we need is usually right under our feet! / P.S. In case you’re wondering, I did watch as the process reversed itself and the bovine wonder gingerly manuevered its head and massive horns back through the wires, straightened its knees, and returned to home base without a hitch.
When the wildlflowers are in bloom I’ll be out walking the fields and enjoying the aroma of a vibrant and new Spring.
Oil painting from a photograph taken in / late Summer in southern Vermont (USA). / A red-tailed hawk had been perched on / the fence post and was the reason for / my stopping to take the photo. The / hawk flew off before I could set the / camera. It still left me with a great basis / for a painting of one of the most / picturesque parts of New England.
At the urging of several fellow RB aficionados I have remade this photo with a relevant background sans the offending barbed wire. SC and PS work. / I hope everyone likes it. / Taken east of Okotoks, AB

The foggy fireweed shot from the late ‘90s is one of the first of my slides that I had scanned when I began my transition to being a digital person. I would sooooooo love to be able to go back in time to reshoot it with my currect camera, rather than having to deal with the grainy scan. However, it remains one of my personal top 5(?) favorite all-time shots. Having learned some of Photoshop’s mysteries in the past few months, I thought I’d take a stab at reworking my old favorite, and adding to it. I borrowed some deer that had shot, also on slide film, and placed them onto the foggy scene. Suddenly I was faced with the huge challenge of making them appear to be in the fog… the further ones needing to be foggier than the closer ones. I wanted the image to remain primarily a feature of the wild fireweed flowers in the foreground, with the deer providing some interest in the mid-ground.
