Acrylic and pastel on illustration paper. (1995) This is truly the first tree I ever painted, the need to paint and create was something brewing so strongly inside I had to do something about it. Yet my resources were very limited, I grabbed the only paint I had any access to, a can of my father’s black spray paint, I sprayed it into the lid of the can and used the only paintbrush I owned a cheep nylon brush from a water color kit and created. I then finished my work with the only two pastels I owned brown and black. / Necessity is the mother of invention, or maybe it’s that there is more than one way to skin a cat. (Sorry cat lovers) At any rate I grew up in a home with very few luxuries but I did have a passion to create, always, I had to feed the creativity. So this is a very special piece to me and I hope to you as well. First Tree is officially published in Artists of West First Tree was Featured in Lifestyles Magazine as part of an article about the Artists of the West coffee table book. Through A Glass Darkly. By Paul D Robertson Pastels 140 cms x 97 I like this piece very much. Sometimes in my work I can witness myself taking leaps of quality, and I believe that this is one of those times. It is an indescribable sensation to see my own hands make something such as this. I begin the with a person, a woman, before me, some materials – paper, chalk, paint. At the end of the slow still hours quickening my fingers, I surface from the fugue and wake from the trance of working. And sometimes I have something before me that is beautiful that did not exist, that what the world did not hold before I began. And it will last for centuries. I love the idea of obscured reflections and scattered and refracted light – my desire to work is pushed further every time I stumble upon something I know I must pursue. In many of my works, whenever it is practical, I will place a left-hand print on a wall or smudging a piece of glass. I have done this for years, and I will never stop. Recently the idea occurred to me that since this has become one of the defining symbols within my work, I could execute a piece based entire on the idea. So I made it happen. I forced it into existence. And I am so left handed, you see, that I almost walk with a limp.

I got sick of beakfaces and lizards momentarily and decided to paint some fishies – literally, goldfish…I’ve applied patches of gold leaf to their little heads. Despite being distracted by Eurovision I managed to finish it this weekend!! This one will probably be at Brunswick St Gallery in their small works show, June 6th. About 20×20cm, watercolour, chalk pastel etc on canvas. These enlargements are bigger than life size:

Baby Bull Production is something I created not that long ago. It’s a mixed media piece on canvas textured paper…...i did it in response to the chilled out cows at Mullumbimby, northern New South Wales, who seem to be very laid back, i suspect they are indulging in the ‘other’ kind of grass also….... they have this real chilled look about them, and I’ve never seen cows anywhere else that have this way about them. I put it in the Casino Art Exhibition and it was the only painting that sold, every year a male school teacher goes to that show, or so the legend goes…....and purchases a piece…...it was my lucky year. Tonight I was asked if I’d ever sold a painting in a gallery…well, yes, and at exhibitions and privately. To date I believe I have sold between 30 and 40 original paintings, which I am very proud of…..in the early days 2002 I was very prolific, things have slowed down a bit with my painting now, because i am much more deliberate and take a lot of time to imbue my paintings with layers and love and depth…..it is just how i have grown as an artist, it is nice to report that there is growth along the journey…(and sales lol)!!! Somebody also has a print of these cows and loves them very much from what I understand lol

18×24 pastel on pastelboard. The original is sold. / This was taken from a photograph by Rita Groszmann with her permission. The cat was a resident in California at the time. For some reason, the piece almost did itself.. it was almost like I was watching it come together from another vantage point. Really enjoyable.. time flew!! Scientific Name: Panthera tigris / Size: Male Bengal: Head to tail tip 8.8-10.2 feet (2.7-3.1m); Female 7.8-9.4 feet (2.4-2.8m) / Weight: Male: 396-573 pounds (180-260kg); Female: 287-353 pounds (130-160kg) / Distribution: India, Manchuria, China, Indonesia / Habitat: Varied, including tropical forest, snow-covered evergreen forest, deciduous forests, mangrove swamps and drier forest types. / Diet: Deer, wild pigs, buffalo, antelope, and gaurs (wild oxen) / Reproduction: After a gestation period of 13-16 weeks, female gives birth to 2-4 cubs / Longevity: About 15 years (to 20 in captivity) / Population: Estimated at below 2,500 / Status: Endangered (information from The Big Cats ) Completed 1998 I FINALLY found the original scan of this piece.. and here you have it..

I originally intended this shot to be a picture of my son holding onto these balloons and taking off, floating into up into the sky … a fantasy, sotybook sort of image. However, my daughter immediately grabbed these balloons from him and started running off. So, as it turned out this eded up having a more realistic look than the one I originally intended, but I thought it turned out pretty cute with the desaturated colors throughout, except for the colorful balloons.

Jack and Jill by Karin Taylor / you are viewing the original creation created from a roll of brown kraft paper / i will subsequently load another couple of versions to RED Bubble soon… and they will also be available as prints, cards and a specially crafted one for tshirts will be here soon too Jack and Jill – The Creative Process a) tear large ‘rips’ of brown kraft paper from the roll / in a frenzy..helps also rid one of general frustrations of life / b) grab a huge paint brush / c) discover lid of gesso is sealed shut, requires a hammer to / remove lid / d) bash gesso lid repeatedly on desk / e) discover gesso has been flung all over the studio floor due to small holes / caused from bashing the gesso / f) clean studio floor prior to doing anything else, as gesso dries fast / g) relax …. dip paintbrush in gesso and slather it all over the brown paper / strips in long horizontal strokes… most therapeutic time of / process…mindless brushwork / h) let the paper dry….and start thinking…hmmm what will i draw? / i) come up with a brilliant idea…. / j) try to draw brilliant idea many times, resulting in lots of screwed up brown / paper and wasted gesso / k) finally come up with brilliant design, oh yes.!! “Jack n Jill” Brilliant idea…but / they’ve all but grown up whilst ‘in situ’ . Jack now sporting a divinely / devilish goatee and Jill always the dreamer, now sporting a resemblance / to the flower children of the sixties, a favourite era of mine…..This also / works rather well becoz aswe all know, after Jack fell down and broke his / crown, he fixed it up with vinegar and brown paper…since Jack is drawn on / brown paper, he won’t have to go too far for a plaster / l) trace over the briliant design with a black texta / m) colour in the brilliant design with whatever’s handy and stick stuff on when / drawing fails completely and you don’t know what else to do..also…when / all else seems to fail resort to those old gum rubbers with star and flower / stampings i made an aeon ago…yep…stamp, stamp, stamp.. works well! / n) to make the bucket…i had stuffed it up completely….so with nothing to lose / i poured ink on paper towel, then cut towel into bucket shape and / stamped it… / o) i used pastels and coloured faber castell pencils plus a heap of charcoal / and some acrylic paint in the mix…. a messy and fun process / p) play with it in photoshop!! a lot!!! / / Mounted Print / Jack and Jill at Twilight Prints and Cards
