Ever had that feeling of absence?
A self-portrait with another self-portrait and my last painting as a background. Foreground: Nude, pastel drawing on watercolor paper, private collection Europe / Background: YouMe, oil on canvas, private collection Australia I reluctantly did this self-portrait, it was one of the compulsory themes for my final exam in Portraiture Photography. My teacher told us to come with something creative and interesting, and gave us some amazing examples from previous years. I left this till the last moment because nothing interesting crossed my mind. In the end I took my last drawing for Chris Orchard’s class and my last painting and did this. I used the natural light which was coming from the balcony from my right side. The image wasn’t “photoshoped”. / Finally when I got up there in front to talk about my work, I was surprised to see that this work was everyone’s favorite. It was the least prepared of all my works. The commission selected it to put it on the school website, and not long after, The Advertiser news paper, called me to publish it. My agent printed it on a large canvas which was sold during South Australian Living Artists Festival.

For my beautiful daughter Terez ,she died when she was 15…. / Draga Terezkem emlekere. This is one of my new oil paintings series , 90cmx90cmx3cm on canvas . Thank you my friends your comments and support mean a lot to me. I had this pain bottled up in me so so long… but I knew and hoped with time passing things will change and turn out good… I was right, things started to unfold last week and I could just see and feel it. Working with this wonderful model just inspired me and brought all those feelings up from my heart, bones and my most inner part. I loved every minutes of it and it gave me a wonderful peace of mind. /
Pastel on terracotta Colourfix sanded paper – 50cm x 70cm The subject with the painting! / During a painting trip to the Tarcombe area of Victoria I met this chap working sheep in his stockyards. It was a very hot day and the intense Australian light was reflecting the red dirt of the yards onto the khaki shirt. The colours in the shirt and battered terry towelling hat intrigued me, particularly the shadow colours. I was very happy with the resulting painting, and so was he – he bought it when he saw it displayed in a local art show. And Mary said: / “ My soul magnifies the Lord, / And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. / For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; / For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. / For He who is mighty has done great things for me, / And holy is His name. / And His mercy is on those who fear Him / From generation to generation. / He has shown strength with His arm; / He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. / He has put down the mighty from their thrones, / And exalted the lowly. / He has filled the hungry with good things, / And the rich He has sent away empty. / He has helped His servant Israel, / In remembrance of His mercy, / As He spoke to our fathers, / To Abraham and to his seed forever.” / ~Luke 1:46-55 Photomanipulation created in Photoshop CS2. Pastel on a scrappy piece of brown Canson paper! This painting was a total fluke from a few years ago! I had bought four new Schminke pastels and I wanted to try them out – there was a pale blue, a pale yellow, a creamy colour and a dark brown. I used a scrappy piece of paper left over from another painting and started doodling! The face just emerged, and I thought she looked sort of ‘aloof’ and ‘Art Deco-ish’ I looked through an old book about fashion, and found some drawings of 1920’s headgear. I just added a bit of light here and a bit of dark there, smudged around a bit and there she was! I thought she needed a dangly earring, so I hung what is actually a pendant on the edge of my easel and used that. Amazing how a bit of scribble can turn into something! I won’t part with it, and my son has claimed this painting when I die! ‘Featured’ in1 on 1: The Fine Art of Portraiture and Works On Paper – January 2009 / Finished in the Top 10 of the Melbourne & Victoria Group ‘Art Deco Delights’ challenge – May 2009 / Featured in the Painted Ladies group – June 2009 / Placed 2nd in the Retro Painted Lady challenge in the Painted Ladies group – July 2009 / Featured in Impressionist Art – Sept 2009
A portrait of my daughter, Jessica, painted in Pastel. We dressed her in a gown that had been my Mother’s and tried to replicate the era with her hairstyle, makeup and jewelry. This was painted with soft pastels on Canson paper which was a brown color. Hard pastel and pastel pencils were used sparingly where fine lines and details werre needed. 24”x18”
9×12 pastel on Tiziano paper I can’t seem to get “Tangerine” by Led Zeppelin out of my head right now. “The Living reflection of a dream”. What kind of woman inspired those words? Some songs just get lodged in your head and stay there for days and days. Tangerine video link

19×25 pastel on Sennelier La Carte paper FEATURED IN C.O.R.E., FRIENDS OF RED BUBBLE, FIRST THINGS, THE PATCHWORK, AND THE SISTERHOOD / She has been sitting on my easel for the longest time. I finally got inspired to finish her. I made her a lot bigger than the others in the series, so that should appease her for me taking so long on her. / She is the Spirit of the North Wind. It is the wind of Winter and of death, but also of rebirth. She gives us the wisdom to overcome death and to know it is not the end. We must walk through the Northern gate at the end of this life and she will be the one to usher us through. Listen to cold Winter wind, and let her help you release your fears into the darkness of the night. Also from the Series
9×12 pastel on Sennelier la carte paper FEATURED IN PAINTED LADIES, PETS AND PEOPLE, FIRST THINGS, FEMININE INTENT, AND THE DIVINE FEMININE I had so much fun drawing Barbara, but it is a lot of work trying to do portraits. I needed to do something completely from my imagination. And of course I can’t call it Blackbird without linking to the song!
Pastel on Colourfix sanded paper (burgundy) – 50cm x 35cm / (Painted entirely with soft pastel and blended with fingers) / (For the benefit of the 500 to 5000 viewings Group – This work has been viewed 1,039 times as at 5/12/09) Straight from my easel to RedBubble!!!! I have been slogging away at this portrait for the past 3 days and had definite intentions of ripping it up and starting all over again! When I left my studio on Saturday and strolled through the gloom of the bush to get home I was feeling quite despondent, but when I looked at it again with fresh eyes on Sunday it wasn’t too bad after all! So I soldiered on with the ‘assistance’ of Mervyn (my pet cockatoo) for company in my studio. He turned a piece of Colourfix into papier mache behind my back, crept up the leg of my easel and snaffled a pastel, and added some more details to his ‘work in progress’ beak carving (he is using one of my floorboards as his ‘medium’ for this masterpiece)! / Anyhow – this is the chap that does the statistics during my son’s footy matches, and I promised his wife I would do his portrait one day, and the day has come! The leather hat and the Drizabone coat had to be included. I hope he likes the final result. I’m happy with it.
