JUST PASSING
When the conditions are right where I live we experience the wonderful phenomena of sea fog. The first one I experienced was when I was “in between” cameras. I was devastated! I have been hoping ever since that we would get another one… I peered out the window today while I was on the phone and saw that today was the day! I had to make my apologies to my friend on the phone – a girl has to get her priorities right – and happily spent the next two hours snapping, with my young boys as my photography assistants. The title of this piece is inspired by one of my favourite scenes in Lord of the Rings. Gandalf the mighty wizard gives his life to ensure the freedom of his friends… and so my friend today gave to me the same gift of freedom as I hastily hung up the phone to explore my sea fog.
This is a stupid phrase, / I know I use it all the time to confuse and annoy children. / It was originally a throw away comment off a George Carlin record from the early 70’s referring to phrases you don’t hear much. / This got me thinking along the lines of Lucan’s “Television, The Drug Of The Nation” Challenge. / Back before Reality TV became so popular back in the dark and damp 1970’s there were television shows that were so truly pathetic and painful that they make today’s television delightful. / These shows, predominantly from the US were called Situation Comedies or SitCom’s. / These awful monstrosities often had an annoying character that had a catch phrase. The more popular the show became, the more that show depended on the Character’s catch phrase to hold the show together or even finish the episode off. / Examples include: / Welcome Back Kotter: “ Wha?”, / “Mister Kot-tieyer” “Ooh Ooh!” (Wave hand like a school child) / / Happy Days “Heyyyy!” / “Coooool!” Different Strokes “What choo talking about Willis?” The Good Times “Dyn-O-Mite” The Poms were just as guilty with / Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em. “ Oh Betty” / or / On the Buses “I’ll get you Butler” These catch phrases would be repeated all over the school yard and work place by unoriginal wags looking for a cheap laugh. / So I made this Tee Shirt in the hope if this kind of television has a resurgence- and mark my words it will again one day. I’m at least on the front foot for some quick sales. / . / . / Or maybe I’m just going surreal / The artwork is a rework of clipart that came with my version of Windows XP
A black version because people who know about these things suggested it. / Of course they were right. / I put an emphasis on the piano. “It’s THAT one” he wants. / A big thank you to the deformed burnt & crispy thing that has become the lucansjem / (to be continued) :)

Taken at Black Rock near Barwon Heads. The storm had just passed out to sea and let the late evening light illuminate the water.
While out on the lake last Saturday I noticed several leaves floating in the water from the surrounding Cottonwood trees. The ones that were the most emotionally compelling for me were these simple skeletal remains. So much beauty in such frailty. A symbol of life. This image also reminds me of my latest favorite song, Shattered by O.A.R. “How many times can I break till I shatter? / Over the line can’t define what I’m after / I always turn the car around / Give me a break let me make my own pattern / All that it takes is some time but I’m shattered / I always turn the car around…” /
Prayer flags and tombstones of Thokla Pass 4830m with Himalayan mountain scenery in the Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. Ama Dablam 6856m dominates the skyline in the centre of the photo with Taboche Peak 6367m to the right and Pokalde 5806m to the left. It was a five hour climb from Dingboche to Thokla pass and the culmination of happiness at reaching so high up amongst the world’s highest peaks was also filled with the emotion of seeing the rock cairn memorials of the climbers who had died in those mountains. Every step of the two hour walk to Lobuche that afternoon was an effort, walking across a rocky moonscape at the foot of the Khumbu Glacier. The prayer flags represent the elements of the five pure lights with blue being sky, white air, red fire, green water and yellow earth. The ancient Buddhist prayers, mantras and powerful symbols displayed on them produce a spiritual vibration that is activated and carried by the wind across the land. The Wind Horse (Lung-ta) carrying the “Wish Fulfilling Jewel of Enlightenment” is the most prevalent symbol used on prayer flags and represents good luck. Featured in Flags in Motion and Himalaya. /

My first real attempt at pastels. / I did this for a friend’s birthday because she loves elephants and butterflies, and she always says to me,”you dont like drawing in colour do you?” / I have always responded, “It’s not that I don’t like it, I’m just crap at it!” / So here’s another challenge I set myself, and I think I would like to practice and master the art of pastels. Completed March 21st, 2009 / Soft pastels and charcoal pencil on pale green rough canson paper, 840mm x 594mm

The Russel Burn tumbles down from the mountains of Applecross, seen as you take the spectacular drive over the Bealach na Ba ( the Pass of the Cattle ) single track road. It is an old drover’s route, and rises to 2,053 feet, from where, on a clear day, you can see outstanding views of the Western Isles in all their glory. Mostly though, it will be so cold and windy that you will will not want to stay too long !! It is a very wild and remote area, so incredibly beautiful. Polariser fitted, ( to slow the shutter for more blur) / f23, three shot hdr (-2EV , +2EV and 0EV …..from a minus 1 stop underexposure reading 0f f23, 1/15 sec. on Aperture priority ) iso 100, Auto wb, RAW files converted in Photomatix and Adobe CS3. / Finished with a little Orton.
