I have just got back from Paris after my trip to the louvre museum. Big photography event over there with loads of work from galleries and photographers. really enjoyed viewing the exibited works was really worth the trip. had a lot of time to some new photos myself which shud be up soon! Missed out on seeing Martin Parr at the exibition… but fortunatley for me he was on the same plane back to england as us!! which was pretty cool!

  • Introducing Mr & Mrs Parr. / I’m quite proud of this shot, I think it’s the best one out of over 400 shots of their wedding I took that day.

  • The view from the danby beacon hill, over looking duck bridge, which you can see above the train. the road leads to danby castle, and fryup dale, which is one of my most loved places. / the hill from which the vista is taken is above danby, and leads over to lealholme.it also has commanding views over the whole area, leading down to the coast. / during ww2, it housed a radar station which led to the shooting down of the first german plane by the then Lt. Peter Townsend, escort of Princess Margaret, sister of our Queen. / North Yorks Moors National Park

  • 4×6 inches, watercolour, gouache and gold ink, 2008. The sixth wife of Henry VIII.

When I am asked which photographers I am influenced by I often have to think very hard. It’s not that my photography is not influenced by other photographers, but more that these influences change on a regular basis as I try out new ideas and approaches to my image making. If someone asked who my favourite all time photographer was I would probably say Bill Brandt. I have a general love of dark gritty monochrome images and have tried in the past to use this approach to produce my own mono landscapes with varying degrees of success probably held back by my use of digital rather than film. But as much as I admire his style of reportage work and portraits it’s not something I’ve ever tried myself. When it comes to a general approach to photography I do like minimalist compositions, especially when it comes to landscape photography, and there I would probably have to cite someone like Hiroshi Sugimoto and his seascapes (currently used on the latest U2 album cover I note). However I don’t think I would ever say I was influenced directly by this photographer – more that his style is closest to what I would strive to achieve in landscape images. Currently I have been reading about Martin Parr and looking at a lot of his images. It is so completely different to anything I have previously produced but his images are still very appealing to me. So during this year’s annual vacation to Turkey I used Martin Parr as my main influence to produce a small project documenting the less pretty side of Turkish holiday resorts. I didn’t manage to obtain quite as many images as I was looking for but generally I’m pleased with the results. Have a look HERE and let me know what you think. Which photographer’s influence you?
