Recently the opportunity presented itself to photograph it in the fog and mist, weather we rarely get here in Colorado…..I jumped at the chance! HDR used along with The Orton Technique. / Thoughts welcomed! / —John

  • I have been here and seen the coming of man to my rivers. In my shadows have walked wildlife that no longer walk here. From my lofty peaks you can see for many miles. Once I stood higher than the far western mountains. I may have shifted and changed but I remain. My rivers are cold and my forest cool. From my bowels man has both feed himself and built his shelters. He has raped my slopes for my wood. Fought wars within me. I still survive. Mist still shroud my valleys. Flowers still shine their beauty for all to see. Come walk my paths an fish my streams. Stand on my peaks and walk my valleys. Loose yourself within yourself as your cares fade away when your with me. I am the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Iron Mountains, Far Blue Mountains, the Sha-cona-ga. Most just call me the Smokies, and I remain. And a quote from John Muir “The mountains, are fountains, not only of rivers and fertile soil, but of men

Background Information: / Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Ebenezer William Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. • A Morning Stroll At the Lake Every now and then we almost miss a shot, and luckily this time I happened to turn around as I was walking back to my car from shooting the sunrise and had this scene greet me. Captured at Cherry Creek State Park outside of Denver, Colorado, the light seemed to almost dance among the trees. Processed in HDR

  • Glacier National Park, USA. It was one of those mornings when you could have heard a pin drop the air was so still. I heard a slight splash, and next thing a Beaver swam across the Lake right in front of me ! Absolutely the icing on the cake for me, though I know plenty who view the critter as a real nuisance ! Since I had the wide lens on the camera , I didn’t get a shot of it, but, what the heck , the light was playing my game on this day ! We also spotted a Black bear on the slopes of the mountain across the lake to my right. A day to cherish. Shot on a CANON EOS 40D, with polarising filter attached, and mounted on a tripod,. f22, 1/6sec, underexposed by one stop, iso 100, RAW file, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW, further adjustments in PS CS3, Levels, Curves, and finished with LAB colour. • Taken in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, USA. Bryce is so amazing, all those rock pinnacles thrusting upwards from the deep canyon, with such amazing colours, and some of them look like they are candy coated ! I got very lucky here, the past few days around Bryce had been real stormy, and the park was closed the day before ! Just a matter of setting up the tripod and waiting for the ‘right’ moment ! It snowed later on in the day ! This was taken on a Ricoh KR10 super, on Fuji Velvia slide film, asa 50. Probably f22, I can’t be sure. I scanned the slide with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and edited in PS CS3, a little tidying with the spot removal tool was necessary, and a little reduction of ‘noise’. • Tree Skeletons shot at Dawn, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, reflected in a pool. I shot this before the sun broke through the mist, as I liked the blueness emphasising the coldness – there was a few degrees of frost that morning. / The image I processed from a RAW file, I felt was a little plain, so I gave it a touch of Orton, which drew out the dead tree silhouettes. Still not happy, I added a texture, to enhance the fog, not too much, since I didn’t want to spoil the ‘soft’ feel of the image. / I can recall the quietness of the early morning as I stood in awe of Mother Nature’s magic ! Shot on my Canon Eos 40D, mounted on tripod, f23, 1/60 sec, / no exposure compensation, the meter read the scene correctly, auto wb, RAW file processed in Adobe RAW, then in CS3, Orton applied with reduced opacities, and a texture, downloaded for free off the internet someplace, applied with discretion, by again reducing opacities etc. SEE MORE OF MY USA SET ….

  • Saint Mary Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Where else would you want to be on a morning like this ? The Elk were bugling across the Lake, it was warm, the air was very still, reflections all around me, gorgeous mountains everywhere…......... / felt like I was in heaven !! / All I had to do was get down a very steep bank on the lakeside – then get back up, Help !! / Magic ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, polarising filter attached, f22, 1/15 sec, iso 100, auto wb, shot at 50mm on my 18-55mm lens, RAW file processed in Adobe Camera RAW, then CS3 with tweaks in levels/curves and selective colour. • Mesa Arch, Canyonlands NP, Utah, USA. Utah has an amazing landscape, there is so much to see, very photogenic with all that red rock, especially viewed against a very blue sky ! (I like it best when there are a few clouds as well though !) This Arch is reached along a rocky trail, and is very impressive, as it perfectly frames the view beyond. / We did quite a few of the trails in Canyonlands and Arches, and found the very dry going underfoot an absolute dream, since we are more used to having to play ‘dodge the bog’ here in super-wet Scotland ! Shot on Fuji Velvia, around seven years ago. I scanned it on to my PC with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and tidied up a bit of ‘dust’ in Photoshop. I also beefed up the red colour for more impact.
