  • The Utah Prairie Dog is the smallest species of prairie dog, a member of the squirrel family of rodents native to the south central steppes of the US state of Utah. Like all prairie dogs, the Utah Prairie Dog is an active forager, eating a wide array of vegetation including grasses, flowers, and seeds. They build extensive “towns” of underground tunnels and chambers, each town composed of a population of members of an extended prairie dog family. Many other species make use of their burrows, including owls, snakes, and other rodents. source: wikipedia

  • Yosemite Valley, California, taken in Northern California. / Canon Powershot SD200 Not just a great Valley… / but a shrine to human foresight, strength of granite, power of glaciers, the persistence of life, and the tranquility of the High Sierra. / Yosemite National Park, one of the first wilderness parks in the United States, is best known for its waterfalls, but within its nearly 1,200 square miles, you can find deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area, and much more. / / / /

  • Emerald Paradise As Is… / Canon PowerShot S3 IS Rainbow Springs Florida’s third largest spring, Rainbow Springs pump 600 million gallons of water daily and serves as the head water to the pristine Rainbow River. The property was acquired by the State Park Service in 1990 and is slowly being allowed to revert to its natural state. / Beautiful floral gardens surround the spring, and the area is immensely popular in the spring when the azaleas are in bloom. The state also acquired Rainbow Springs State Campground, located nearby, which was formerly privately owned. From the campground, you can tube or canoe the crystalline waters of Rainbow River, or fish for large mouth bass and other freshwater species. / A nature trail provides a lovely walk past two waterfalls and the azalea gardens, and meanders along the Rainbow River. / /

Not long ago, mankind nearly destroyed this land with warfare. But nature has found an ingenious way to rejuvenate this land, almost as if by miracle. This Eden is Plitvice Lakes National Park, the oldest national park in Europe, located in Croatia’s Dinaric Mountains. Plundered during the Balkan War in the early 1990’s, Plitvice owes its new existence to a type of limestone called travertine, which has the ability to grow quickly and continuously, creating new pools and barriers, water slides, and cascades. There are 16 falling lakes arranged in breathtaking terraces, connected by countless waterfalls and rapids. Underneath the Dinaric Mountains, rainwater gathers and rushes through subterranean caverns, drawing lime from the stone. Here, stalactites hang and species dwell that are so rare and strange they defy the imagination.

  • The Moulton Barn, Mormon Row, Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming, USA. I got up early for this one, I had travelled thousands of miles to see it, had only one morning to get my shot in the bag – and what did I find ? / A film crew shooting an advert ! Along with a battalion of other photographers, I was champing at the ‘bit’, since we weren’t allowed to shoot in case we captured the models – male and female – the whole darned thing was so artificial !! So, when there was a lull in shooting, I crept under a bush and hastily ‘snapped’ my shot. Maybe I should pursue a career in the ‘Paparazzi ??!!! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D with polarising filter attached, mounted very hastily on my tripod, Canon efs 18-55mm lens set at 45mm, underexposed by half a stop, f 27, 1/20 sec, auto wb, iso 100, RAW file developed as much as possible in Adobe Camera Raw, then in PS CS3, selective Levels/Curves, saturation of colours achieved with LAB colour, then the tiniest amount of Orton applied, to ‘pop’ the textures of the wood and grass. • Shot in the Lamar Valley, YELLOWSTONE National Park, USA. A lucky grab-shot. / I had spotted the Cottonwoods and wanted to capture the beautiful colours of Fall against the shadowy hill behind, then I saw the Male Bison emerge from the trees. He had a mission on his mind, a couple of females across the river, LOL !! (out of sight of this shot.) He was moving pretty quickly, and luckily I had my short telephoto lens already attached to the camera ! A magical moment and experience !! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, set on Landscape mode, Aperture Priority, with polarising filter, hand-held, iso 200, f 6.7, 1/180 sec , underexposed by one stop because of the dark shadowy hill , Auto WB ( I mostly use this), lens was my Canon EF 75-300mm set at 200mm (don’t have this lens anymore) RAW file, processed in Adobe Camera Raw, then tweaked in PS CS3, with selective Levels/Curves, and selective colour adjustments. • Saint Mary Lake, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Where else would you want to be on a morning like this ? The Elk were bugling across the Lake, it was warm, the air was very still, reflections all around me, gorgeous mountains everywhere…......... / felt like I was in heaven !! / All I had to do was get down a very steep bank on the lakeside – then get back up, Help !! / Magic ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, polarising filter attached, f22, 1/15 sec, iso 100, auto wb, shot at 50mm on my 18-55mm lens, RAW file processed in Adobe Camera RAW, then CS3 with tweaks in levels/curves and selective colour. • Yellowstone National Park, USA. / I think maybe that when you visit Yellowstone, it feels like you are on another planet, nothing seems for real ! / The colours and ‘scapes are outlandish, like Mother Nature flipped out ! Weird and wonderful ! / It can be difficult to photograph – the wind was blowing the hot steam towards me very often, fogging up the lens, making everything very wet, not good with those electronics ! / ( I was told that the moisture from the steam can actually etch the lens, so be warned !) / The other problem is folk passing by making the boardwalk bounce around, shaking the tripod…......LOL !! / Fall is a great time to visit, a bit crowded, but those colours really zing out, and the steam is intensified by the cold Autumn air. / Oh to be there in Winter….............. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, hand held, f13, 1/90 sec, at 49mm, iso 100, auto wb, polarising filter, RAW file, processed in PS CS3, levels/curves, selective colour adjustments, finished with LAB colour and Intellisharpen. • Mesa Arch, Canyonlands NP, Utah, USA. Utah has an amazing landscape, there is so much to see, very photogenic with all that red rock, especially viewed against a very blue sky ! (I like it best when there are a few clouds as well though !) This Arch is reached along a rocky trail, and is very impressive, as it perfectly frames the view beyond. / We did quite a few of the trails in Canyonlands and Arches, and found the very dry going underfoot an absolute dream, since we are more used to having to play ‘dodge the bog’ here in super-wet Scotland ! Shot on Fuji Velvia, around seven years ago. I scanned it on to my PC with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and tidied up a bit of ‘dust’ in Photoshop. I also beefed up the red colour for more impact.
