Looking through the bus window on the way home, I see this playful movement of light and dark shades, between leaves and branches. It is a moment to be captured. Real image with no additional painting… The light painted it on my camera’s ccd sensor! I have set the camera on manual zoom, manual speed and aperture, so that the motion can be capture on shutter release. Behind the glass window of a moving bus, I hunt for the right angle of sun and the right tree, and follow throught the target like taking an image of a sport player. All about timing and a bit of luck! Love to see critiques and comments. All welcome. This was my final glance from the rim on the South side. From this moment forward I spent 8 hard days backpacking through the Grand Canyon. It was a magical and mind-clearing event. Yes, I packpacked with camera and heavy tripod. NO FILM to carry this time!!!

This is my favorite image which I captured a year ago on an 8-day backpack into the incredible canyon. It was my first trip there, and I was with non-photographer/hard-core hiker types. So, I had to shoot on-the-go with very little time to think about my shots. This was the only day that we saw any clouds, and it really helped make the photo work. I didn’t realize this at the time, but the lines really draw the viewer in to the art. Lucky me. I leave tomorrow for another week-long backpack into the Grand Canyon!

I spent last week in the wilderness, backpacking through the inner depths of the Grand Canyon. A small side trail led to “Ribbon Falls” from Bright Angel stream on the North Rim. So I went. The place was a magical oasis in the hot and arid desert. I photographed for an hour and then left. I was not satisfied. I had to return. Several days later with sore feet and eager to begin my 4000 foot climb out to civilization, I passed this side trail again and went in for a second look at the falls. The sun was different, and so was the mood. I “felt” the place much better this time and “let the picture take me” this time. I like the result.

Mesa Arch, Canyonlands NP, Utah, USA. Utah has an amazing landscape, there is so much to see, very photogenic with all that red rock, especially viewed against a very blue sky ! (I like it best when there are a few clouds as well though !) This Arch is reached along a rocky trail, and is very impressive, as it perfectly frames the view beyond. / We did quite a few of the trails in Canyonlands and Arches, and found the very dry going underfoot an absolute dream, since we are more used to having to play ‘dodge the bog’ here in super-wet Scotland ! Shot on Fuji Velvia, around seven years ago. I scanned it on to my PC with my Nikon Coolscan VED, and tidied up a bit of ‘dust’ in Photoshop. I also beefed up the red colour for more impact.
