  • Gibson’s Beach, Port Campbell National Park in Victoria, Australia.

  • “It was a cold and rainy day. The sky was grey and gloomy, tickled by bare tree branches. Driving past a park, a murder (group) of crows caught my eye. They were turning maple leaves looking for a meal. Their sharp blackness stood in stark contrast against the golden leaves on the ground. / / Always interested in these intelligent yet elusive creatures, I stopped by to observe them. Keeping my distance not to disturb them, I started to capture frames. The crows took short flights cawing in their search for food. The dull sky colour became suddenly a pretty canvas by offering a light grey background to the flying crows. Their black silhouettes graced and otherwise dull sky. / / One individual flew closer to me and perched on a branch. Glancing downwards, she offered me her beautiful profile. She seemed to be still pondering about a prospective meal.” / / / / Image © Carmen Mandel-Cesáreo / / / —-—-—-—-— / Artist statement / My photographs are not enhanced; they represent the true nature and colours of the subjects as captured by the lens. I never lure my animated subjects to come close to me: spontaneity is the key. / / This is an original uncropped image. / / =============================================================== / Proceeds from the sales of all my Crow images will be donated to Crows.net / / Crows.net / The Language and Culture of Crows A site for cooperative research on the language and culture of the American crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos. / / Facts about the American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos): / ..Crows are the most social and intelligent species of birds / ..Crows mate for life / ..The young stay with the family unit for up to five years and help the parents raise siblings / ..Crows show tool-making and tool-using behaviour / ..Crows are not a health threat / ..They will not attack you as portrayed in the movie The Birds / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / / Carmen, creator of Art for Conservation

  • Taken on Saturday May 17 2008 at the 4000ft level of Mt Washington, New Hampshire USA. Mt Washington is the highest peak in the Presidential range of the White Mountain National Forest. We experienced the Mt.Washington Auto Road, which is America’s oldest manmade attraction. It first opened in 1861. / It was explained that the trees at this altitude are buffeted by the wind and assume strange twisted positions.

  • Taken on Highway 16 North in the White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire, USA on Saturday May 17, 2008. The view is looking towards Mt Washington, the highest peak on the Eastern seaboard. We took the Auto Drive Route up the mountain when we arrived there but it does not resemble this road in any way. It is treacherous, with shear drop offs on each side, just room enough for two cars, but they ask that people coming down the mountain yield to travellers going up. The top 4000 ft of the mountain was off limits due to weather conditions: snow and ice, but will open later in the season. /

  • The Mummy Range seen from Moraine Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park here in Colorado. I wanted a real dramatic image so I went ahead and converted to B&W using the Power Retouche’ Ansel Adams B&W Zone System plugin, a lil tweaking and this was the result. B&W is often so unseen and not noticed, shame, because it is such a gorgeous medium to work with —-John

  • Peasholm Park is an oriental themed municipal park located in the seaside town of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. / It opened in 1912 and became a favourite venue for galas, displays and exhibitions. The park was extended to include Peasholm Glen, a natural ravine, in 1924. Attractions include an artificial boating lake, where mock naval battles are staged, a putting green and a champion tree walk. / Peasholm Park is sited on the north side of the town of Scarborough in a mainly residential area. The site is about 14-hectares and takes in a narrow steep-sided valley running north-east towards North Bay. The valley gradually broadens until it opens out on to low-lying ground closer to the sea. History / The park is on the site of a medieval manor house of Northstead which was part of the Crown Estate from the 14th century. By the beginning of the 20th century the area was open land used for farming and as allotments. In 1911 Scarborough Corporation bought some land called Tuckers Field from the Duchy of Lancaster to create a public park. It was the borough engineer, Harry W Smith, who had the idea of setting out the gardens in Japanese style. Japanese style statues in the park were purchased from Killerby Hall and exotic shrubs and flowers were imported from the home of a local retired banker who was living in the French Riviera. In 1924 the park was extended south-westwards along Peasholm Glen following the purchase of more land from the Duchy of Lancaster 1921. Parts of the east side of the Glen were in private ownership and these were donated to the Corporation. The park was used for aquatic displays, musical performances and evening firework displays. It becoming immensely popular in the immediate pre- and post-Second World War period. After a period of decay a programme of restoration was initiated. Improvement works have been made possible by the granting of funding of over £300,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and additional funds from Scarborough Borough Council. Following the draining of the lake, work was undertaken to remove the large amount of silt in the lake bottom, with the aim of removing enough silt to free sufficient water capacity for the lake to operate successfully. The park remains open and in public ownership. Nikon D60 / Lens: Nikkor 18-200mm / 1/400 f/5.6 ISO100

  • This beautiful example of Victorian architecture and design was built between 1886 and 1889 for the Duke and Duchess of Newcastle on this their estate. The 180 foot spire stands out as a landmark that can be seen from far away, and is one of the most picturesque I have seen. Inside, it is wonderfully crafted and whether you want a place for quiet contemplation or to marvel at magnificent Victorian craftsmanship, this chapel provides a perfect place for reflection. Unfortunately, they no longer allow photos of the inside, but when last I was there I managed to capture this image which displays it’s character so well. There is a definite dickensian atmosphere to the place, especially during the christmas season. Clumber Park is looked after and cared for by the National Trust of England This is a HDR image combining 6 bracketed shots using Photomatix Pro for Macs. Slight adjustments in lighting and contrast were done using the enhanced details tool. Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll / 28-300mm IS zoom lens / f/16 / 1/15, 1/25, 1/40, 1/100, 1/200, 1/500 / ISO 100
