I can still remember my very first camera that my parents had given to me when I was about 8 years old. I took that camera everywhere and snapped shots of anything and everything, however it wasn’t until much later in life that I was really bitten by the photography bug. I was planning a big move to the Canadian Rockies and thought now is the perfect time to buy my new camera gear for shooting wildlife. I bought all the equipment I needed that would put me up close with all the wildlife that the mountains had to offer. So off I went chasing Bears, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Elk and Wolves… pretty much any critter I could capture with my lens. It was a fascinating and thrilling experience. Then fate brought to me a girl and she would change my life forever… Newfoundland is where I now call home, with my beautiful wife and baby son. This province is a photographer’s paradise. The scenes change from day to day and the opportunities for capturing them are endless. With my camera in tow I now begin my journey through Newfoundland, photographing and capturing her raw and rugged beauty to share with the world. I hope you enjoy the photographs presented here. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. Here is the image following ‘Red Ribbon’. My little girl worked out how to open the heavy back gate and thought she could escape into the big park at the back of our new house. I decided to add this image to satisfy the curiosity of everyone who wanted to know what she saw through the hole in the gate!

Constant down pours for more than a week have produced some amazing sights around Uluru. Usually bone dry sand and dust is transformed into a tropical garden if only for a short time. Background Information: / Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6183 feet (1884 m). The lake has a surface area of 0.5 km². The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. However, when it is full, it is a beautiful shade of blue. The lake gets its color from the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis. The symbolism of this image is deep. Man against nature, his arrogance even when dwarfed by the age and strength of nature. / This was taken in Arches National Park at Delicate Arch in the Fall of 2005. There are many photographs of Delicate Arch and I didn’t want to duplicate what had already been done. With a man dressed in a black suit, he appears in a unique vision of the famed Delicate Arch stepping out from another time and place.

This beautiful stormy scene presented itself as I was overlooking the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. (If you look closely, you can see the Kissing Camels near the lower right-hand corner.) Hard to imagine it’s in the middle of a huge city. Update 20-June: Exciting news! This photo was chosen to be published in Gaia – The Living Planet, a book compiled of imagery and poetry from within the RB community. I’m so excited to receive my copy in the mail soon!

On the wide open plains of the Kruger National Park, South Africa, we happened upon this large, lone bull. He seemed to be going somewhere, as he detoured around us slightly, wary of our clicking and whispering. When the brief encounter was over, we both went on our way, perhaps, I’d like to think, better for the meeting…

After 13 days of non stop rain, it was great to see the sun come up this morning. This jetty is about 30 metres from my back fence, so it didn’t require too much effort – just rolled out of bed and stumbled down in my pyjamas : ) / / Blackalls Park / Lake Macquarie NSW Australia

The day was horrible, persistant rain and heavy showers ( I’ve been told there is a difference ) and blowing a gale. I noticed a break in the clouds on the horizon and took a gamble that it would clear around sunset. I high-tailed it up to the forest and was blessed, for once, with the most amazing lighting I’d ever seen. The New Forest pony was the icing on the cake as far as I was concerned. I used a Canon 20D and a Sigma 10-20mm lens. This was shot in Raw and processed using PS CS2. The processing was: change colour balance / levels / curves / slightly lighten the pony and land with an adjustment layer / sharpen / save This was taken in the New Forest National Park in Southern England.

Autumn Travels Shot in Alluvial Fan area of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado What a scene that just glowed…and I mean GLOWED. It made your jaw just drop open. I am fortunate in that no one else was there, and was lucky to be able to take about 100 shots of this scene alone, playing with composition and such, and custom white balance settings, and in this one, something similar to a sunset setting was used. Well, I’m back from my trip to the farm …. back to civilization ..ie..the internet. I took lots of photos – way too many.. Here is one I took at a stop over in Sydney. Taken from the parking lot at Clingmans Dome,GSMNP. The mountain was named for Brigadier General Thomas Lanier Clingman, by Arnold Guyot a geographer. Clingman in the 1850’s was the first to accurately measure the height of the mountain. The mountain was called Kuwa’hi (the mulberry place) by the Cherokee. This is where the legendary great bear chief and doctor dwelled.In whose magic bath the wounded bears are restored to health…Settlers first called it Smoky Dome then later was called Mount Buckley before Guyot named it offically

The Aspen Stand This shot got some really good feedback over on FredMiranda.com so I thought that I would go ahead and share it with you all here as well. Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park, this is the type of Fall Aspen shot I have wanted, but for some reason, whenever I have shot these kinds of shots in the past, they just never really have come out. Well, I think it did this time. It is almost to much of an iconic Colorado in Autumn photo, but I think one thing makes this one stand out from others. The lines. If you notice the black areas of the bark on the Aspen, that is actually where the Elk have eaten away at the bark. However, I like how it creates the line from left to right, going up higher as it goes to the right. I didn’t even notice this until I was processing the shot, and I suppose you can blame that on negative space. I suppose you can say that I am happy with the shot, I finally got the Autumn image I have always wanted. For those of you who don’t know how beautiful the Colorado Aspen’s are in Autumn, just ask Judy, she will be glad to tell ya! Let me know what ya think! / —-John
