  • I was out for coyotes, and again found better luck with birds. I did see one coyote – the big male. I was headed south, he was headed north, and there was a fence and about 10 meters separating us. We both stopped and checked the other out for about 30 seconds, and then both of us headed on our respective way. I didn’t have the camera even out of the bag, and even if I had, our meeting was before dawn and wouldn’t have been enough light for a photo anyway, so I just decided to enjoy the moment. I was hoping that I’d see some other coyotes, but he was the only one of the day. As I was searching for coyotes, I happened upon a little American Coot family at the edge of the marshy little pond in the wildlife refuge. Momma Coot had about half a dozen little cootlings (that probably isn’t the official name for them). There was no way to get a cleaner shot, either – they all stayed under the cover of twigs and leaves as they grazed along. Mom would occasionally stop to feed a hungry chick. Just about the time I found them, the clouds appeared and the light levels dropped dramatically. I had to take off the CPL that I use at altitude to get anywhere close to a decent shutter speed, and mom and the chicks were just constantly moving and active.
