  • oil on cardboard

  • The last of what had been a pod of about 100 dolphins to race the boat bow on a recent trip to Papua New Guinea. Nearly fell in getting the shot!

  • I took this photo at the mother in laws house yesterday. These are some of her wood carvings from Papua New Gunea (she calls him George). I thought it looked good taken looking through 1 of her pot plants.

  • A girl from the Dani tribe, Baliem valley (near Wamena), Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua).

  • Mummification was a very important element of the Papuan culture, the preserved body of a village’s big man, an elder, chief or a great warrior was regarded as a link with ancestors. The process involved hanging the corpse in a specially build house over a fire, and smoking it continuously for up to a year. Indonesians regarded the tradition as barbaric, prohibited the procedure, confiscated and destroyed most of the mummies in the area. This is one of three survivors in the Baliem valley. The smoking process doesn’t protect from rodents though – you can see the teeth-marks all over the hands of the mummy. Baliem valley, 15 km from Wamena, Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua).

  • a giant rhino beetle (Xylotrupes sp.) in threatening position. Baliem valley (near Wamena), Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua).

  • The descend from the mount Elit was quite an experience. Only later our guide told us how many accidents happened on this track. We made 1000 meters down in 2 hours, while not moving more than perhaps 100 meters forward. The kind of a pile of sticks on the bottom of the picture is a prototype Papuan ladder. It was semi-helical, extremely slippery and missed lots of steps. I took the photo while waiting for my friends to get completely down, didn’t want to fall on their heads with the whole wobbly contraption. Irian Jaya (Indonesian Papua), Jayawijaya mountains – still some 3500 m.o.s.l.

  • Imagine a leisurely trip down a serene river in a canoe carved from native timber without a care in the world….. This place was a photographer’s dream and another highlight of my recent trip to the island of Biak, West Papua. Well off the beaten track!

  • One of my most enduring memories of my recent trip to West Papua. Great scenery, friendly locals, warm water…..and cold beer!

  • Coastal village in the middle of nowhere on an island off the coast of West Papua. The locals who live here are caretakers of an ancient (and eerie) burial site – Badwa, The Place of Heroes. Famous warriors and chieftains have their bones packed into hollowed out logs and have their remains interred in various limestone cliffs and caverns in the surrounding area and islands. I felt very privileged to be given a tour…..

  • View from my outrigger boat off the coast of West Papua. This was one of the many uninhabited islands in the area. The area was an absolute paradise with stunning wildlife, sandy white beaches, and an amazing history. Well off the beaten track and no tourists to be seen anywhere….except me and my mate, Nikon!

  • I wasn’t sure about whether to post this one or not but my Sister recently told me that I should do so! These cute kids lived in a West Papuan village I stayed in while on a dive holiday last year. Despite growing up in total poverty and surrounded by government corruption these people were among the friendliest and happiest people I’ve ever met. It really brings home to you just how lucky some of us are to lead the lifestyles we do and just how much we take that for granted…..

  • This boy was a local living in the village next to where we lived

  • Picture of a man from the Kombai tribe. Taken in the lowland rainforest of West Papua in Indonesia. He wears tradditional body decorations except the safety pin earing.

  • On a deep wall dive in Raja Ampat in Indonesia I came across the most beautiful white sea fan (gorgonian coral). It was one of the biggest I had ever seen. Im so happy that I was able to get a decent shot of it.

  • Madang Papua New Guinea © Vicki Ferrari This was taken at Madang Papua New Guinea, back about 1988 or 1989. This is a scan of the 8X12 print that is in my original portfolios. There is only basic editing done here (dust and scratch removal, etc) in photoshop and it is as it was shot all those years ago! Vicki Purchase Framed Print /

  • Two schools of fish swam by each other in the warm tropical waters off West Papua, Irian Jaya A touch abstract – Its all a bit chaotic

  • Rhinopias aphanes (Lacy Scorpionfish) – Loloata – Papua New Guinea

  • Early 1988. The villagers of this remote community scraped the top of their mountain for nearly 8 years, wearing out over 70 wheelbarrows and many more shovels, finally creating their own airstrip. I was checked out on the airstrip by a senior company pilot, who then told me that after I dropped him off at Madang (our base), I was to fly some politicians back for the official opening of the strip. The procession of colourfully dressed people was just incredible, the celebrations and feast were fascinating! Some men covered their skin with charcoal as well as crushed dragonfly wings … This was one of my first works in Photoshop 4, not CS4. The proceeds of all sales go to World Vision, an organisation dedicated to looking after children in Third World countries. .... EXCEPT, while it still runs through Phoenix Appeal, these proceeds will go to the RED CROSS VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE APPEAL. Check out my web site www.twistedirony.com.

  • This skull is from the South Australian Museum Papua New Guinea collection. I have created this image to reflect the colours of the earth and aimed to make it look more ethereal than sinister.

  • We found this beautiful creature in one of the remotest jungles in the world while on an expedition for the BBC. The ancient volcano, Mt Bosavi is home to some of the rarest and most amazing wildlife I’ve ever seen.
