The symbolism of this piece is quite rich, and in further researches I found out that I ended up making relations between all the representations without consciously being aware of it. The Chemistry is about inner alchemy and how the power of transformation manifests itself through Will. That’s basically my version of the ancient illustrations on alchemy in which we see a dragon-serpent “wrapping” a maiden. In my version, for artistical reasons, I decided not to draw the serpent involving the maiden’s body, but putting her closer to the background, and showing her body changing according to the colors of the environment – which are the colors of the four elements. The serpent is a representation of the unconscious forces of Will. The maiden raises from a pond (the beginning of all things, regeneration, new birth) that has been formerly muddy and still (the dark green color at the edges), and now is made clear by the power of fire (strength, courage, will, passion), or the dragon. A bunch of monarch butterflies come out the pond. The butterfly is one of the symbols of the Gemini sign (Mercury) and the classical representation of regeneration and rebirth. The maiden’s hair turns first into green grass from which 3 lotus flowers (another symbol of rebirth) arise, and then into fire. The dragon’s head show itself among the profusion of hair. The four elements are clearly present, in images and colors: Fire (dragon’s head, the top of the picture, the color red), Earth (grass and leaves, the color green), Air (butterflies, the color yellow) and Water (the pond, the color blue). It’s part of our journey as human beings to face muddy waters throughout our life. But to remain stagnant in them is our choice. We all have the inner strength to being born again, to rebuild ourselves – we just need to accept the changes and look toward the future. We are the alchemists. colored pencil on bristol board / 17×8.5

This beautiful lady is a pencil, ink and chalk pastel on a piece of watercolor/pastel paper. I have been working on her for a couple of months. I wanted to have her finished by my birthday this last Sunday, April 19th… so Saturday I called her FINISHED. I was experimenting on this piece with different layering techniques that I have used on a few of the other pieces that got uploaded here before her. This was so involved that I don’t know how many that I will do like this. But I am happy with her. She represents all of the women of the world who are now just ‘waking up’.
Vote for her in the lollypop challenge! ♥ created using a scanner, illustrator and photoshop. / inspired by tokyo street culture & fashion featured in the tee section of the featured gallery / in the group WOMANLY / and in beige is death see the original print version—-- which was created for a challenge over at the ♥ Lolita at Play ♥ group…

This pastel was to be a tribute to Mimi Yoon. I am always blown away by her women. The lips and eyes of her women grab you, draw you in and don’t let go… but for me it is the the hair. Always the perfect frame to showcase the creation. Sometimes the hair will look like that quick last minute addition… but it is always the perfect ‘crowning’ piece of the picture. Part of the perfect mix. I wanted to capture just a hint of the woman’s face with beautiful full lips and then just let go with the hair. Let the pastels fly: loose and wild… but damn-it… I had to slow down and get the lighting just right. Sorry Mimi I tried. Maybe someday I will feel the freedom that you enjoy. I’m workin’ on it. Thanks for the inspiration. This is an 8×10 in. art marker and chalk pastel on watercolor paper.
Capturing a passing emotion with chalk pastel and pencil on watercolor paper using a limited palette of blue, grey, black, and white. The strength and passion of the Divine Feminine.
This was fun. / I started with a photo that I found in an old reference file – did a marker sketch on white 80 lb. cover stock paper using warm and cool grey markers and then layered cool and warm colored chalk pastels on top. I dedicate this piece to Jack Kershner of Lance Lot Studios. He hired me right after graduating from college. He taught me so much about the advertising business and I will share some of the wonderful stories with you some day soon in my Journal. Here is one that pertains to this piece - One early spring afternoon Jack told me that I should bring my lunch with me the next day. He was going to take me somewhere special for a picnic. The next day we closed the shop early for lunch and we walked through the busy business district where the studio was located to an underpass beneath the county courthouse. It was a typical windy St. Louis spring day and we were having some difficulty spreading out our sack lunch on a metal bench that was directly under a flight of stairs that took you up to the landing in front of the courthouse. It was like being inside of a wind tunnel and I didn’t see any special reason for being here… until all of the secretaries that worked in the surrounding buildings (dressed in their business dresses and skirts) decided to also go to lunch and use the stairs that we were sitting under to get to all of the restaurants. It was quite a show as each one battled with the wind whirling up the stairs. Okay… I am not too proud of that now, but I was just 21 at the time, and this was my first job after school, and my first boss…
