Nature’s Bliss, Storm Shattering Smiles And A Checked Picnic Blanket With The View
/ . / The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia’s most well known and photographed landmarks. It is the world’s largest (but not the longest) steel arch bridge with the top of the bridge standing 134 metres above the harbour. Fondly known by the locals as the ‘Coathanger’, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was officially open on 19th March 1932. I shot this on an overcast night, hence the purplish sky. Assuming 100 photos were taken each day since the bridge was opened, I calculate that this would be image number 2,781,943 Some interesting facts about the Bridge Length of arch span 503 metres / Height of top of arch 134 metres above mean sea level / Height to top of aircraft beacon 141 metres above mean sea level / Width of deck 49 metres / Clearance for shipping 49 metres / Height of pylons 89 metres above mean sea level / Base of each abutment tower 68 metres across and 48 metres long (two pylons rest on each abutment tower) / Total length of bridge 1149 metres including approach spans / Bearing pins Each of the four pins measures 4.2 metres long and 368 millimetres in diameter / Thrust on bearings Under maximum load approximately 20,000 tonnes on each bearing / Number of rivets Approximately 6,000,000 / Largest rivet Weighed 3.5 kilograms and was 395 millimetres long / Longest hanger 58.8 metres / Shortest hanger 7.3 metres / Total weight of steelwork 52,800 tonnes including arch and mild steel approach spans / Weight of arch 39,000 tonnes / Rock excavated for foundations 122,000 cubic metres / Concrete used for bridge 95,000 cubic metres / Granite facing used on pylons and piers 17,000 cubic metres / Allowance for deck expansion 420 millimetres / Allowance for arch expansion The arch may rise or fall 18 centimetres due to heating or cooling / Number of panels in arch 28, each 18.28 metres wide / Record tonnage erected 589 tonnes of steelwork was erected on the arch in one day on 26 November 1929 / Paint required 272,000 litres of paint were required to give the Bridge its initial three coats Facts and figures from: Mackaness, C. Beauty is unbearable, drives us to despair, offering us for a minute the glimpse of an eternity that we should like to stretch out over the whole of time. Albert Camus (1913 – 1960)

Canon PowerShot SD1000 / 3 shot horizontal panorama After posting “The Neighborhood Ablaze” I received a comment, noting that the image would have been even better if a wider angle shot had been taken. Honestly, I couldn’t agree more with the comment (after all, I’ve always wanted a wide angle lens). So, I took his advice into account the next time I was out shooting. Yet again, it was a sunset reflected in a puddle, but this time I created a panorama to capture the full extent of the scene. I’ve gotta say, I couldn’t be happier with the results. Just yet another example of how feedback can truly improve one’s skills. / This was taken from a low-level perspective at the edge of a puddle on the park’s biking path (it was chilly outside, so I didn’t need to worry about oncoming bikers/joggers). The clusters of trees at the park provided the greatest silhouettes! The three horizontal images were stitched together in Paint Shop Pro 9 (boy, I really need some proper panorama software). Thanks for viewing!
This small grove of trees stood out against the slanting sun that stopped me in my tracks. The scene was there. The light was right. This is the result. / Enjoy a large mounted print of this photograph to enjoy the almost 15,000,000 pixels used to create it.
A PERSPECTIVE ABOUT OLD BARNS / He said,” you couldn’t get paint that beautiful”, for a new country home he’s building down the road. Only years of standing in the weather, bearing the storms and scorching sun, only that can produce beautiful barn wood. / It came to me then. We’re a lot like that, you and I. / Only it’s on the inside that the beauty grows with us. / Sure we turn silver gray too… and lean a bit more than we did when we were young and full of sap. / But the Good Lord knows what He’s doing. / And as the years pass He’s busy using the hard weather of our lives, / The dry spells and the stormy seasons do a job of beautifying our souls that nothing else can produce. / And to think how often folks holler because they want life easy!

This wonderful little icy creek, gently flowing through this gaping canyon, spoke volumes about it’s older cousin that had raged through here to cut this canyon eons ago. The scene was there. The light was right. I composed the photograph and took it. I hope you enjoy it, as it’s one of my favorites. / Enjoy a large mounted print of this photograph to enjoy the almost 15,000,000 pixels used to create it.
The translucent ice, and blue light reflected off the water of the creek, make this one of my favorite photographs. / Enjoy a large mounted print of this photograph to enjoy the almost 15,000,000 pixels used to create it.
