  • Ethereal Light
    by Kenneth Pang

    US$21.38–US$114.00

Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France Jun 2006. Paris is atop or in the top three of many “city lists”, and having been myself, I can vouch that it is for good reason. Many people probably share my desire to see Paris with my eyes and to experience what she has to offer. With so much reputation and hype at stake, there was also a bit of trepidation because I didn’t want to be disappointed. As things unfolded, my four days there in the middle of Summer was definitely insufficient. There are many famous icons of Paris and the most famous is of course the Eiffel Tower. For me, there is much more to Paris than its visual beauty, which of course is stunning. There is also such a rich history to the French and Paris as the centre stage of many political, historical, social and religious events throughout history. While doing the not-unusual random wandering around the streets of central Paris, I unexpectedly came across the Cathedrale de Notre Dame on the two islands in the River Seine. I was speechless at not only finally seeing the famous front facade (and also the amazing gothic features including the gargoyles) for myself, but having come across it unintentionally. The cathedral definitely looked closed because it was dusk at the time and the doors were closed. While taking my pot shots of the famous circles on the front, as if by magic, or divine intervention, the huge front doors swung ajar as if to call me inside, right before I had finished the touristy shots and was about to continue on the rest of my walking adventure. I was thus lucky enough to visit the insides of the hallowed cathedral. I’ve been to a fair few cathedrals throughout Europe but Notre Dame definitely sticks out in my mind when I think back to what it’s like to be inside them. Perhaps because sunlight was rapidly shrinking, or perhaps for some other reason, there was a somewhat darker feel inside – not in a spooky sense – but a certain tranquility and peace. The kind you might feel when you are gently cocooned in bed in an old but comfortable house, perhaps like when you visited your grandparents when you were young. It might have been stormy and raining hard outside, with lots of lurking shadows, but somehow deep inside, you felt completely safe because of where you are. I took this photo during my earlier days of handling an SLR and though technically I feel I could’ve taken a better shot now, the fact that the image turned out the way that it did seemed to be purely by chance, like the way I stumbled inside the cathedral. I know that there is much more to Paris than what lies on the surface and I hope I am lucky enough to see more of her for myself in the future.

  • Breath
    by Nicholas Johnston

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Oil on canvas, 18” x 22” (457×559mm). This was the first painting I produced after a hiatus of 13 years. It was done very quickly and spontaneously, even crudely (I didn’t even own an easel). For all its faults it still remains a very important picture for me.

I stumbled across RedBubble without having any idea what it was. An online friend of mine had her RedBubble address on her MSN name, so I checked out the site. I was so impressed with the work that was featured on the front page, and further exploration led to more jewels to uncover! I’ve only been a member for a few days, and I’m already addicted. I’ve been going through the last few year’s worth of photos and picking my absolute favourites to display. I’m enjoying the process! I have my art on deviantART (I’m pange there as well) and original illustrations, paintings and some prints over at Etsy (I’m thoughtbubble ). Since I’ve discovered RedBubble and how amazingly easy it is to sell prints, I’m going to try to keep all my prints here and focus on original art at Thought Bubble. I am so excited to be here on RedBubble. Thanks to those of you who are watching me, commenting me, or even just looking! I’ve already been bubblemailed a few times which feels amazing because I’m such a newbie on the site. The community here seems really lovely. _ Hearts and sparkles! / ~Pange

I’ve graduated from handling a P&S to an SLR for almost a year now. Boys being boys, I was at first, focussing too much time and energy on the technical aspects of cameras and equipment. I’m not an arty person by nature so it was in some ways like learning a fundamental skill from scratch as a relatively ‘old dog’. My love of photography is not about getting right in an exposure the rules of the perfect composition of a photo or the correct exposure settings etc. I love it because a photograph reflects, in my own words, ‘a moment in time’ which deserves to be permanently captured and shared. I love life for all its ups and downs and I love travelling the world and seeing how others live and being able to experience it for myself. I am thankful for the opportunity to have travelled as widely as I have to date. I know that not everyone is as fortunate as me and I hope that I can share my life and a story or two through a lens and a camera. Hopefully from this point on I can really concentrate more on the experience and less on the technique.

  • Winter Escape
    by Kenneth Pang

    US$21.38–US$114.00

Iceland, Dec 2006 This is image is an exception to my policy of avoiding postcard images, and also one which I think is technically perfect. It contains a small lake which somehow escaped the reach of the freeze in the middle of winter in Iceland. What makes it more remarkable is that the body of water is not very large, despite the proportions in the photograph, hence decreasing the probability that it would have gone unfrozen in one of the coldest places on Earth. Iceland for me so far, is the second most beautiful place I’ve been to (after Santorini, Greece). It is a place like no other that I’ve been to with its constant smell of sulphur steaming from the seemingly infinite number of cracks and crevices leading directly to the centre of the Earth, and the unusual moon-like landscape. (But then, I’ve never been to the moon myself so what would I know..?) It was during the part of the year when there was roughly 4 hours of daylight and waking up at 10am in pitch darkness was definitely new to me. As was a sunset which seemed to last 3 hours, followed by night which seemed to last forever. Putting it altogether: strange smells, uninhabitable and unusual lanscapes, snow and cold, there was a surreal and dream-like feel to my whole time there. The laws of the universe and nature that I understand simply didn’t seem to apply in this beautiful place. Yet ironically, this is one of my best examples of textbook framing and composition.
