  • found in the pretty town of Vaux en Couhe in the Poitou Charente, this “wash house” is quite a large in comparision to the ones that we normally find around our way! • Two days of the year Lezay comes out to Thank and Remember family members and friends who lost their lives during the Great War – today the 11th November 2008 the orchestra marched and Les Anciens carried their flags and Flowers and the school children joined the parade with flowers and words of commemoration to say… May 8th is another day in the Calander…....Liberation Day… This is the soldier that stands in the middle of Lezay to commemorate the war to end all wars! Living here in France brings it just that little bit closer to home – how it must have been and how the countryfolk lived…..last night there was a documentary about Albert Kahn and his colour photos of the great war – seeing them made us realise just how awful life would have been for the people here in the middle of it all…. I would like to share this with you – My daughter Chloé came home from Lycée today and said that they had to write a prose as if they are talking to the object or person this is her translation into English from French she is worried it will not make sense so I have also posted in a Journal in both languages I think it fits this photo and is our first Collaboration of which I hope we have more :) Untitled / Oh War, you are the enemy of mothers, / you take our brothers, our sons and our loved ones, / you destroy the countryside, which echoes / with the cries of soldiers, and nobody understands / what you are doing here, / we have had enough already, / don’t you think so? / We lose our lives, our spirits, our reason for living / because who wants to live after seeing / the horror in the fields / the blood which runs / like a river who never stops, / brothers massacred, who will never again wake up. / You bring death upon us, with your malicious spirit, / to see a woman dissolve in tears, / that pleases your vicious mind / who is overjoyed to see / our men trembling, who know that soon / they will die. by Chloe May Smith 12 November 2008 / Chloe’s Work Featured on the Home Page 11 November ‘09 / featured in Images with Words Jan 09 / featured in Statues and Such Nov 08 taken on canon 400d using sigma lens on full zoom at 300mm on P program

  • taken in May around our friends village after our 2 hour long walk and many photo opps – this lovely cottage/barn is owned by a chap that has grown up in it, and farms still, he has just recently had electric, water and a phone installed – over the last 3 years – doucement, doucement!! Also until recently he still had earth flooring in the kitchen which as been remedied now – a very normal story around here! He also has many goats and shares some of the house with the chickens! This type of house is also known as a Charentaise Long House :) and sometimes the shutters are painted in the typical blue Charente colour! • Chloes Piccolo flute needed some attention – and before it gets to loved and finger marks ALL over I thought I would have a play – the sun was a winter sun coming in through the window but not other lighting except to change settings on the camera. Hand Held no tripod used Another Instrument Chloe is teaching herself – not that I am a proud parent – but the determination and love of music I can be nothing else – she has Talent with a capital T!! Not content with the Flute, teaching herself guitar, she also is determined to play Piccolo and my parents bought her Pan Pipes and a Peruvian Flute for Christmas – they are on her to do list also!! Hopefully both our passions will make a good pairing :) Featured in Still Life Fine Art and Food Photography 05/11/09 Canon eos 400d with canon 50mm f/1.8II lens / Focal lenght 50mm / Iso 400 / 1/125 seconds / no flash fired / as is from camera Sets of Two 186 views

  • Well it has to be official in the Nature Clock the fruit trees are just coming into blossom (march) – this particular blossom is that of the Prunier – yellow plum – a delicious fruit that the birds normally get to before us!! • Since living in France I have been trying every Spring – Summer to capture the Little Blue Butterfly that flits around our garden…we took a walk out on Monday and to my amazement not one but 3 of the little beauties were flitting around – they never seem to rest – then they found water! Not the best photo in the world as we were in the shade at this point – I would of course loved for it to have opened those wings – but I am just happy to have found 3 and captured them at rest for a minute! They are really quite small and I couldn’t get too near as they like all things move too quickly when under threat! Of course I shall carry on my quest to find one with wings open – never say never is my motto….I must admit to just clicking once focused as I didn’t want to lose the chance of capturing it! Canon eos 400d / Sigma lens 70-300mm / FL 300mm macro mode / 1/1250 seconds / F/13 / ISO 800 / P Programme / Hand Held / As Is

  • on the Lac Pouvreau, having spent a few hot hours taking a walk around this rather large (man made lake), we dined and then waited until just about 9pm for the sun to start setting…..the lake is wonderful and the whole area is made up of huge rocks in the water and around the water….. there is also the remains of a Don Jon. And one of my first freshewater Sunsets – have a few sunsrises but not had the opportunity for a sunset since visiting Florida way back on the old film P&S so a lovely finish to a long hot day! Placed 10th in Sunset on a Lake Challenge in Lakes and inland waterways group August ‘09 / Canon G10

  • Naomi took this image of Alice when they were here on their holidays with us. They decided to walk/bike the 2km into Lezay one fine morning to buy Pastries!! By 8am it was already hot and Alice realised that if you go down a hill you then have to go back up – so she reserved energy :)) Casio EX-Z80 / taken in Sepia Mode / 6mm / F/3.1 / 1/160 seconds by NAOMI aged 14 / I will try as much as possible to comment back and say thank to the lovely comments that are left, but what with school and sharing with MUM it can sometimes take a little longer :0 – please also feel free to leave any hints and tips it all helps me to learn :)) Nomi :)
