  • Miss Rodeo Okotoks, Aaron Courchesne, looks so very regal on her gorgeous palomino as she helps to steer the stock out of the arena. / April 12/08 High River Senior Pro Rodeo. / SC work. NOVEMBER 2008 UPDATE Courtesy Okotoks Western Wheel! / Miss Rodeo Okotoks captures Canadian crown in Edmonton / She’s living her dream. / For Aaron Courchesne, Miss Rodeo Okotoks 2008, her dream was realized on Nov. 4 when she was crowned Miss Rodeo Canada 2009. / “I’ve been striving for this for about seven years, when I entered my first rodeo queen pageant,” she said. “Even if I wasn’t going to be queen I knew I was going to rodeo. I knew that it was something that is never going to change about me.” / Courchesne, 24, loves rodeo. She loves the spirit and camaraderie of the sport. / “It’s the only sport where, if your horse is hurt, you can jump on your competitor’s horse — they help each other so much.” / Her goal this year, as Miss Rodeo Canada, is to inspire young people. / “I want all kids to know that even if rodeo isn’t their passion, to find their passion and run with it. Never let anyone tell you to quit. If you want to do it, just go for it.” / As an ambassador for rodeo, and for Canada, Courchesne will put in her fair share of appearances across the country, in the United States and overseas. / She’ll attend more than 300 events over the year. / She’ll be educating the public, inspiring young minds and signing autographs, trying to motivate rodeoers and ensure the tradition of rodeo stays strong. / “You are judged on your speaking abilities, your horsemanship, their appearance and you take a written exam on rodeo knowledge.” / Courchesne had some help from her favorite equine. / “Everyone from Okotoks will remember my Palamino mare, Hope,” she said. “(Hope) was one of my queen horses, and I gave riding lessons on her and I barrel raced on her. She’s definitely one of my best horses.” / ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ /

  • For everyone who likes my “Quarter Horse Broodmare” shot, here is the resulting wee bundle of joy – a quarter horse colt named Nevada Pale Moon. When he was born, the owners & I all thought he was a cremello (a double cream gene resulting in a cream rather than golden coat colour), and this opinion was further enhanced by those wonderful blue eyes (another genetic factor for cremellos). However, as he grew older & lost his baby fuzz, the underlying coat was revealed to be golden after all. Some research on horse colour genetics followed & it was discovered Pale Moon is one of a very small percentage of blue-eyed palominos! I fell in love with him when he was just a few hours old, it was tempting to add horse number eight to the herd (right up until I thought about the winter feed costs!) • Thank you so much Louise for letting me paint Skipa Gold San. He’s such a gorgeous boy that I just couldn’t resist. I gave him the same treatment as my Bluebell Meadow horse painting. This portrait is not cloned but digitally painted with brushes, picking up the colours of the horse. To finalise the painting, in PhotoImpact X3 I used the warp tool here and there to bring out little touches to correct, fixed his eye (the hardest part) using the paint brush to add the light and shades, plus a small amount of blur here and there on him to blend. I added the whiskers with the pencil and then blurred them. And finally brushed a multicoloured textured chalk brush in places to give a sense of his hide. I really hope I have done him justice. Thank you for looking and thanks again to Louise and for her permission to put him up for sale xxxxxx

  • Taken in Amherst, Virginia on a back road near where I live with my Canon Powershot SX110 IS. I saw some cows on the side of the road near some woods, so I had to pull over and get a few shots. Well while I was taking shots of the cows, I saw something move off in the woods…. and there were two horses!!! :)) So I called them and they came over. This is uncropped. They both got up close and personal. Such a beautiful horse. I’m so lucky to live in a place with such gorgeous animals all around! :)) / /
