A view into Kalalau Valley in Na Pali, the famous north coast of the Hawaiian island Kauai.

Lush greenery on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Winter or summer, it rains here several times a day. In the background are perpetually misty cliffs of the legendary Na Pali coast.

an early morning glow remaining from sunrise brushes kauai’s na pali coast as we prepare for the 11 mile hike along the ancient hawaiians trail to kalalau valley.
This is a composite image. The Canyon is from the Na Pali Coast on Kauai taken from a helicopter and the floor is of the musee d’Orsay in Paris. I made the floor “glass” so you can see the rest of the canyon below. At the top of the canyon are clouds which normally cover this area of the island. I was looking for something “fun” to do one night while playing on the computer and about two days later this image was finished. I was hoping to create a magical place …on paper at least. I love in the Studio, when people look at this image, get that look on their face, and ask me me, “Where is that?” “In my head”, I answer. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to visit a real place like this?
OMG- I love these fellows…I wanted to jump in and hug her. But, I took over 100 photos instead..lol /
The colorful and rugged Na Pali Coast Cliffs on the west side of the Island of Kauai, Hawaii, taken from a Helicopter at an altitude of about 3000ft. Kauai is the northern most Island in the Hawaiian Island chain. Its famous “Red Dirt” is due to the concentrated red iron oxide in the soil and rocks. A topless seacave can be seen in the lower left side. It is possible to go into this cave with a small boat from a natural entrance tunnel in the cliffs.

Hiking the NaPali Coast-Kauai, Hawaii 01
When driving down the Pali Highway into Hololulu from the Windward side there is no way to know that right below the four lane divided road is a world of tropical, jungle-like beauty. I am sure that hundreds, maybe thousands of drivers pass by this world and are totally unaware that it exists.

Canon EOS 30D 24 – 105 zoom / Shooting Date: 08 August 2008 / Tv (Shutter Speed) 1/320 / Av (Aperture Value) 7,1 / ISO Speed 250 The Nuuanu Pali Lookout is a perennial favorite stop among visitors to Oahu. The panoramic views of the Windward side of the island from this expansive cliff will blow you away. Just make sure the winds don’t blow you away, either. Located at Nuuanu Pali State Park, the lookout overlooks the 985-foot cliffs of the Koolau Mountain Range. (Translated, “pali” means “cliffs.”) And yes, it is extremely windy. The trade winds blow through the valley between the high mountains on either side, forming a strong wind tunnel of sorts. On extra windy days, you can even lean into the wind and let the gusts hold you up. The Nuuanu Pali was the setting for one of the most significant battles in Hawaiian history. In 1795, Kamehameha I and his army invaded Oahu, arriving in an imposing fleet of war canoes at Waikiki Beach. The Oahu warriors were led by Kalanikupule, the alii nui (chief) of Maui and Oahu. Kamehameha’s army marched to Nuuanu Valley to face Kalanikupule’s troops. The ensuing battle was fierce, bloody and unrelenting. Gradually, Kamehameha’s men gained an advantage, forcing Kalanikupule’s forces to retreat further up the valley. The Oahuans attempted to make a final stand, but Kamehameha’s army was too strong. Thousands of Kalanikupule’s men were pursued and driven over the steep cliffs to their deaths. It’s said that the victory was so complete that not a single Oahu warrior that got into the upper part of the valley escaped alive. An engineering firm was hired in 1897 to build what is now the Old Pali Road, a winding road used to carry traffic across the mountains. During construction, workers found an estimated 800 human skulls and other human bones at the foot of the cliffs—the century-old remains of Kalanikupule’s slain warriors. Today, Nuuanu Pali State Park is open daily (weather permitting) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and there is ample free parking. A light jacket is recommended. Remove hats, caps or anything else that may be blown away by the winds. Take the H1 freeway (eastbound) from Waikiki, then take the Pali Highway, Route 61 via Nuuanu Pali Drive. Follow the signs to the lookout.
Historians believe this rugged yet beautiful coastline was the first area of Kauai to be settled by the ancient Hawaiians. As inhospitable as these cliffs appear, they provided the settlers with all the basics of life: freshwater from the mountain streams, native vegetation and fertile ground in the valleys, and unparalleled fishing in the vast ocean.
This was the moment I was hoping for after eleven very strenuous miles on a muddy, narrow trail. We photographers go fishing every day, mostly we get nibbles, but sometimes we land a whopper. I am so proud of this image because I went out to shoot this scene very intentionally. It was very hard work, and this will pay off. The Na Pali Trail winds along the steep and rugged coastline of Kauai’s North shore, and ends in the legendary Kalalau Valley—the place is nearly mythical in its beauty.
Kaua’i, Hawaii. I’ve been to this under-rated island the first time for our honeymoon in 2004. When we took on the difficult 11-mile Kalalau Trail, I knew that wasn’t the last time I’ll be walking its deliciously muddy path. In 2008, I found myself tromping the same slick trail. It was as beautiful and rewarding as I remembered it to be. The best part of that hike? The chance to share it with our son (then 7 months old) who was such a trooper in his backpack carrier. I took this shot with him squirming behind me, eager to see what the fuss was all about ;)
