A truelly amazing petroglyph made by the Paiute Indians native to the Owens Valley. These glyphs are carved into very hard volcanic rock. this is the 3rd in the series of Paiute Indian petroglyphs…....from 5,000 years ago…...unearthed in the mid 1970’s, Las Vegas Ranch, southern Nevada depicted here are the Black Canyon/Vegas Valley / Big Horn Sheep. a totally different species than the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep although to look at the animals side by side, one could never tell they aren’t the same…...which has always fascinated me to death!!
The Owens Valley has numerous petroglyph site. These petroglyph’s may have been made by the Paiute/Shoshone Indians but arrowheads that date to 10,000 years old have been found in this area, so it is difficult to say who really created them. In the background is White Mountain Peak, the third tallest in California at 14,252 ft. Owens Valley, Eastern Sierras, California. All images are © Nolan Nitschke. Pyramid Lake is situated in the high desert about 45 miles east of Reno Nevada on the Paiute Indian Reservation. The Truckee River flows from Lake Tahoe, down the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevadas, through Reno and eventually into Pyramid Lake where it eventually evaporates. I was not here for a photo shoot so had little time to explore this beautiful spot. Will go back.
Taken on the Paiute Indian Reservation at Pyramid Lake.
