I got asked the other day to give people a peek at some of the new paintings i have been working on over the holidays. I finished off the ‘Roadmap to peace’ image that i showed a little while back…pushing back the elephant that stood out too much that people kindly gave me feedback on, so thanks for that. I have been working on two but one didn’t photograph well so here is a peek at the second painting in the series. Anyway, i think i am happy with this image, so enjoy…show and tell! / G The ’ Wegner’s Pet ’ computer based image t-shirt design: and the painting: Mixed Media on board, 60×60 cm.

  • John Scott's writing on my painting

I would like to share the writing by John Scott on my work with RB members. / I asked a big favor to John whether he could write something about my work. / John galdly accepted to write it for my coming exhibition. I feel very honored to have John’s fantastic writing. Thanks John Scott! Exhibition-The whisper of Trees Artist-Min Woo Bang Anyone familiar with Min’s work will instantly recognize his pieces from the onset. Those who are new to his work will familiarize with them quite quickly. By contrast they will not forget them easily. / Min’s limited palette of moody, sombre tones, textural groundwork and a healthy mix of intuitive application, draws the viewer to another space instantly. This space, like an old meditation cushion, transports the viewer to remote feelings, akin to deep meditative states, some feelings only available to seasoned practitioners. East or west, the results are the same. Space, mood, power, sanctity, serenity and danger, all of these aspects are evocative of a deeper primordial urge that lies within each soul, prompting hermetically sealed questions of themselves. These urges are profound, sometimes subtle and vast, begging the bigger questions of “why are we here?” “where did we come from?” and “where are we going?”. On viewing Min’s work, definable culture is immediately transcended, amalgamating our common ground of human emotion. Mountain vistas unfolding then enfolding within themselves, reflecting the powerful elements of mother earth in all her majestic power. Cloud formations enact out primordial tantric dances around coruscating peaks that emerge like enlightened flashes of inspiration. Mists that obfuscate hidden nooks and crannies, again, reflect our inner subtle mind, enticing us to take a risk and search for hidden pearls. Little caves are discovered, veiled like allegorical secrets hidden deep within our innermost complicated worlds. / Mountains have always been mysterious places of power, and yes, completely sacred. Pilgrims from all races may spend months, even years slowly prostrating toward, circumnavigating or climbing mountains, for just one inner pearl. Many have died trying, again reflecting our weaknesses as well as our strengths. Sprinkled throughout history, literal and mythological mountains have been at the center of many universes. Like a psychic transference of this sacred symbol, Min’s art literally recreates the mystery from within his inner being, from feelings and memories. These imaginative memories remind us of what we need so much in a difficult world. Like a visual prophet, in the face of such overwhelming odds, Min’s work reminds us that we have to pay obeisance to the earth not the other way around. If we choose to “listen” to the immensity of the space in-between the sound, the rewards may be few, but well worth it. Min’s work does that for me. / In a world confronted by daily turmoil, unrest, swift change and uncertainty, Min’s latest works are changing and adapting to new challenges, and yet, like primal anchors, I feel safe and nurtured in these emotive, visual works. This Gnostic-like knowing that I’m connected to the earth through Min’s interpretations is comforting for me, as they talk directly to my hidden space. / New inner winds are guiding Min’s latest paintings; these new works now incorporate foreboding trees and forests, replete with an organic language of their own. There is still the familiar subjective colour palette giving an over-all poetic rhythm within and throughout Min’s entire visual history. The Bauhaus school of colour philosophy comes to mind here, as a well-trained visual artist eventually finds their own limited subjective colours to expand on complex theorems. The trademark colouring mentioned above, gives Min’s work immediate recognition of his current work, forming a bridge from his earlier works. / Mists appearing through small gaps entice the viewer to probe the unknown aspect of their own respective inner search. In a few works, powerful heat emanates in the distance, a coming state of human affairs? The element of fire begins to slowly creep into Min’s new works and our collective unconscious; Jung would have a field day with symbolism such as this. In some cases the viewer is enticed into the unknown, but not in a threatening way. Gaps appear like the abyss of the unknown, an unknown that one needs to cross to gain new insights and new tools for change, before again feeling safe in comfortable territory. These works invoke a non-threatening voyage of discovery in myself. These works are of a highly spiritual nature, in a world of new age remedies and age-old philosophies. / Mists veil outcomes, like allegorical texts, this visual sage scries into our future only to find unknown outcomes, urging each of us, just to be here, right now, not to push but just contemplate exactly where we are at. / The Hermit card in the major arcana of the Tarot comes to mind here as he emerges with his lamp to guide us through new inner terrain, contemplation, perhaps enlightenment itself? This mystery is held comfortably within Min’s philosophical grasp of his environment. Whether one resides in a complex city structure or a wilderness landscape, Min’s work creates a viable alternative to outer confusion and chaos, a meditative inner space. Min’s work creates a path for me, through time, space and temporal realities, a path that is elusive but ever present for the genuine searcher. • Problems with Clones...

Dear Janis, / / These days artists are receiving emails like this: “We like to do business with you. We are skilled painters in Shenzhen, China. There are lots of talent painters working together in our studio. We can paint oil painting at every grade of different style, our price and service are very competitive, you can make more money than before if you buy oil paintings directly from us. The FOB prices can be $7 per copy for 20” x 24” and $12 for 24” x 36”, if you are interested in, we can send some photos of our works to you, we also can paint exactly according to your any email pictures, it is very easy to do the international business now, looking forward to your reply.” / Mutsu Carnival As well as cheap copies of famous paintings for the world’s supermarkets, what these chaps have in mind is that you go golfing while they make your stuff—at less cost than you might normally pay for a couple of golf balls. They’d like you to think it’s the new reality of free trade. / The Group of Five / / I’ve seen a few fairly good copies of my own work, done without my permission. At first glance they look okay. At second glance the painters haven’t figured out the order I do things, and they’ve not rendered well the deviations and mannerisms that make my work somewhat distinctive. As clever as these guys are, they’ve not lived my struggles, and they’ve put in unpleasant struggles of their own. Can others see this? People tell me they can recognize my work from across the room. Many other painters can say the same. How sophisticated does a collector have to be to spot a phony? How greedy does a dealer have to get to sell one? How stupid do artists have to be to let themselves be cloned? / / / Jazz As many know, I’ve worked long and hard to thwart the Chinese copyists. A couple of years ago we managed to have replicas of more than 1200 Western painters removed from Eastern clone-sites. The various levels of governments were of no help in this fight. Direct email appeals to the decency of the cloners worked, if only temporarily. These are talented, well-trained painters. Our efforts brought to mind some of the great principles: Put the devil to work in your work. Fill it with private magic. Use techniques and processes that are yours alone and tough to master. Do things that others can’t. / / Best regards, / / Robert / / PS: “We can do good job for you and save you time.” (Chinese cloning website) / / In China, the word “copyright” currently means the right to copy. We need to help the Chinese understand that world citizenship means more than a fast buck-it means respect, honour and integrity. There are more than 10,000 clone-painters in Shenzhen-all of them poorly paid. Artists need to reply to these Chinese emails and let it be known that they do not want their work cloned under any circumstances. Chinese artists need to be encouraged to be their own artists. Many have seen this light and have achieved international acclaim at prices that do not perpetuate poverty in either art or ethics. The above is a copy of one my letters from Robert Genn, a well known and very successful Canadian painter, who provides an art listing site called The Painters Keys…he has given me permission to reprint his letters for you whenever I feel you’d be interested in the topic under discussion. / / I too have had a number of these emails, which means my work has now been cloned and is being sold as I write this, with not a penny sent to me..I tried to find them on the web, but the sites are so big [there are thousands and thousand of paintings] that I gave up. Janis Are you worried about your art being cloned, and have any of you received emails like the ones I’ve received? / Picture of a cloning factory at work...There are regular competitions held, with 100 or more painters all racing to see who can finish a copy of the same portrait or landscape the fastest. The quickest of the Dafen, Shenzhen artisans can complete up to 30 paintings a day. Over 10,000 Chinese painters occupy the city of Dafen, Shenzhen. Five million oil paintings a year are created here for foreign markets. P.S. According to Robert, one of the main sites is called Arch-World. / Andrew and I went to have a look right away. It turned out to be a big site that ‘represented’ more than 2800 artists, living and dead. These folks have been simply ‘lifting’ images from dealer and public gallery websites, and other online pages. They are offering them as giclees or photocopies in several sizes. You can fill up your shopping-cart for peanuts. Smaller sizes are 129 Yuan—379 for larger. That’s about US$16 and $46. They also frame and ship.

My studio was in an uproar as I was redecorating…everything was in boxes packed away…I had to paint, I had to do something to take my mind of the horrors that were being shown day and night and yet I could not turn the television off. / Then I found my large journal with some blank pages in it…o.k. I thought I’ll do some flowers….I could find only some tubes of paint but no brushes…I was desperate…looking around I found something and started to paint with it…I could not really see what I was doing…the images just flowed out of my brain on to the paper…several weeks later I looked at them more closely and then I realized what they were…these are the images that I painted and I gave them titles that I thought expressed the emotion that was felt in the city at the time... / / September City.. still with no idea of what was in store…colours are bright, but on an even keel.. / / September City 2...the days before the horror..no one could imagine how things can change in a day…colours begin to darken… / / September City 3..Chaos...when the horrors started..no where to turn…no where to run…the city is covered in clouds of white dust…colours are dark and obscured…. / / September City..Disbelief...this could not be happening…we should be safe…why is this happening to us? shades of darkness hover over everything now… / / September City..Fear...where next..what is to happen to us…all around us are the shadows of fear…no place to go… / / September City..Lost...we’ll never recover from this…there is no going back…this is the end…. / / September City..Missing...where are they…our loved ones…have you seen this man? / / September City..Redemption...it will take time, but we will recover….we are proud to be Americans… I used acrylic paint and an old plastic membership card, to do these paintings…nothing else...they are dated the week of September 11 2001….

  • Pen and Wash, Sketches and Patterns In Photoshop

This tutorial can be used for several things, hence the terrible title :) Every tutorial I have here can be used in different ways to what is shown, I quite like this one though, because to get to the end result (pen and wash) the process naturally takes the path of a sketch or something you could use as a pattern to transfer one of your photographs to a canvas to paint. Warning – there’s always warning LOL This is a really, really image dependant tutorial. There is probably no part of this tutorial that is going to suit another image, but the good news is that you’ll get to fiddle around with settings, and that can’t be a bad thing :) So the start image comes to us from someone, but I can’t remember who. If anyone does find the owner, could you please leave the name and web address so I can credit them. Open the image and duplicate the it by pressing Ctrl + J or dragging it to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Working on the duplicate layer go to Filter>Blur>Smart Blur (If you haven’t got Smart Blur, try Surface Blur or Median) and you can punch in the settings I have if you are working on the start image. Click OK to accept the settings. Add a layer mask to this layer by clicking on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Using a black, soft edged brush and with the opacity of the brush at about 50% (top toolbar) in one swipe brush back in the face. Once you have that done, flatten the image Ctrl + E and then duplicate the layer. Got to Filter>Stylize>Glowing Edges and you can punch in the same settings I have – in the teeny weeny dialogue box LOL Click OK to accept the numbers and then invert the image by pressing Ctrl + i on the keyboard. Then press Ctrl + U and take the saturation slider all the way down to -100 change the blend mode to Multiply. Take the opacity of the layer down to about 80% (you can fiddle with that later as well. You should end up with something similar to the image below. Duplicate the original background layer and drag the duplicate to the top of the layer stack. Press Ctrl + i to invert the image and then change the blend mode to Colour Dodge. You’ll notice in the image below that the glowing edges might have been a bit strong in this instance because it has left a bit of colour in the image which shouldn’t really be there ….. thought to self – maybe I should have run through this to get the exact settings and make myself look good LOL This is where fiddling with the settings comes in useful. Go back to the middle layer of the sandwich and fiddle about with the opacity of the layer. I took the opacity of the layer down to 60 % to give it a bit more of a pencil effect, if you leave it higher you’ll get the pen effect. At this stage you could use it as a pattern for painting or if you do it correctly :) as a pencil sketch – but you can take it one step further, all with some brushes and the foreground colour set to black. Set the f/ground colour to black and go and pick a brush, I chose ‘Watercolour Loaded Wet Flat Tip – 63’ In the top toolbar and took the opacity and the flow of the brush down to 10%. Paint over the little troll thing but try not to go back over the same area more than once. You may end up with something like the image below. Go and grab a different brush, or you use the same one to go back over the image and build up an effect. If you make a mistake, switch the foreground colour to white and it will soak up some of the paint. Always make sure that you are working on the Colour Dodge layer, you’ll soon know if you’re not because you’ll end up painting with grey :) Adjust the opacity and flow of the brush to build up the image and zoom in and out to get an idea of how the process is going. After you do each paint layer in building up the image, it might be wise to take a snapshot so you can revert the image if you don’t like what you do next. You can go back to the middle layer (multiply blend mode) and take the opacity of the layer down to 0% to loose the pen/pencil lines and end up with a painted image. If you play around a little bit, you should end up with something a whole lot better than my image below :) Have fun!

  • Reynaldo and Anthea's Passion Series Collaboration and Journey on RedBubble

Reynaldo and I have today just completed our 16 painting/16 Drawing Passion Series Collaboration. What a beautiful journey it has been. We would like to thank our friends on RedBubble for your ongoing support through this series and have truly appreciated and enjoyed your beautiful comments, compliments, favourites and views. Reynaldo approached me on the 27-7-09 after seeing my Passion Calendar asking me to collaborate with him on a Passion Series of Sixteen Paintings and Sixteen Drawings. In April this year I wrote a Passion Poem and created 8 Passion drawings and these were contained in my Passion Calendar. Loving Reynaldo’s paintings I accepted immediately Reynaldo’s offer to collaborate and from there we did not look back. We started with these drawings and have used a number as the inspiration for Reynaldo’s paintings but I also drew before the collaborations began and through out the entire collaboration and Reynaldo would interpret and create from my new drawings. I also wrote four Poems and one short story inspired by the magnificence and beauty of Reynaldo’s Paintings. This collaboration has had a life of its own as Reynaldo so eloquently wrote in his upload of our 16th painting this morning together we have been the yin and the yang. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Reynaldo who is a brilliant painter, admirable professional and beautiful man. Our collaboration has made both of us grow as people and artists and as a way of saying a big thank you to our friends on RedBubble for their support and for celebrating the excitement and success of our first collaboration. I have put together the flow of our collaboration over the last six weeks. Please enjoy. It all started with the Muse & Wild Woman I drew a line drawing of Muse & Wild Woman. Rey commented it would make a good painting I responded by saying would you like to paint this and he did. You took my hand and brought my fingers to your soft sensual lips. You kissed the skin of each finger delicately and they tingled with anticipation. I placed my hand on your arm and stroked your silky skin gently. Your beautiful brown eyes looked down at my bowed eyelids and you tilted my chin upwards to face you directly. I trembled inside as your eyes connected to mine. Again, you took me in your arms and hugged me to your chest with passion and strength. Through my satin jacket I could feel the fine contours of your chest rise up to meet my chest. You released me from your warm embrace and took off my burgundy jacket. Your eyes rested on my chest with pleasure as you took off my soft black top and released it over my head. Following your lead, I unbuttoned your ink blue shirt and slowly took your shirt off your chest. You stood before me, your beautiful chest bare and glowing in the subtle light of the moon. You pulled me passionately towards you and kissed me delicately and then with more fervour on my mouth. My mouth opened and responded to the sweetness of your touch and taste. You reached down and unbuttoned my bra so that the skin of our chests connected softly, delicately. I could feel the bliss of your touch as your soft skin merged with mine and we danced slowly to Pachelbel’s Cannon. It was a sweet, balmy night and soon the silver moon beckoned us to come greet her directly. Effortlessly you opened the grand white wooden door that led to the garden and we strolled topless and free into the sanctuary of natures beauty. The tall pine trees created a protective wall to create a delicate and intimate setting I walked to the bird bath and stood there gazing into the endless depths of the night water. You came up behind me and put your arms around my neck pulling me back into your body. Your hands reached down and cupped my breasts and I moaned under the sensuality of your touch as my nipples hardened responding to your touch Inside me the fire of passions rose up and I could feel the pull towards you. I let my head fall back into your chest and shoulders. I closed my eyes and fell into a state of bliss as the passion rose up inside me. A gentle breeze ruffled our hair and I shivered in delight of being loved by you. Nearby, the blood red rose bush created a seductive aroma and a couple of petals broke free from the bush and flirted around us as we continued our dance of sensuality and love into the darkness of the night under the guidance and light of the subtle but strong silver moon. / A short Short Story by Anthea Slade / Sixteen: Purple Passion Painting and Purple Passion Poem / / Purple Passion by Reynaldo Purple Passion / Her body tilts back into him / opening her breast to the universe / She reveals an open heart / in order to be close / She risks raw / to reveal what is true If she falls will she be caught? / She leans back exposing her heart, / her breast to the world. / Vulnerable echoes across her soul / as she risks real / in order to grow She dreams of true intimacy / but she knows that to be close / can be messy and not always polite. / Closeness urges her to be more, / to push the boundaries of fear / She imagines herself dance / through expectation / as she eradicates limitation. She hungers to tell her story / and still be seen and in / her dreams to be real. / What ever is written in her heart / finds a voice in time / and he will hear her. The emotion of longing / strokes her soul and she feels / his arms holding her arms, / his cheeks pressed to her cheek, / his hot breath on her neck, / his masculine scent mixing / with her feminine scent, / releasing the pulse of heart / and the reverie of fidelity. She can feel her body open / as the more she reveals / he remains. / And she delights that her / truth does not shred their closeness / Instead he loves her story / he holds her close to his heart / as her story unfolds / a tear scuds done his cheek. / She shares her life / of soul and her years. He whispers in her ear / telling her to reveal more and more, / as their heart beats in time / he does not want her to shut down / her soul to social propriety / And with each truth he urges her / to be more and more of what she is. He sees her, not just her sensuality and / beauty by her soul screaming to find voice / He knows her sensitivity that purrs, / her passion that integrates her reason, / and her heart that expands his universe. / He holds and contains her fragile courage / and she leans back, relaxes into his / strength and tenderness the true note of his love. She is no longer afraid to be as fragile as she is / and no longer fears the echoes of her inner strength / With his strong arms around her, / She can breathe and be, / because purple passion is just like that, / where to be is finally enough! / By Anthea Slade 13-9-09 Once again Reynaldo and I would love to thank all our beautiful friends for your support and comments and following us through this wonderful odyssey our Passion Series Collaboration. Reynaldo and I have already started working on our Second Collaboration that we will be releasing soon on RedBubble. Anthea & Reynaldo

A simple tutorial on how to remove a background from an image placed into Photoshop. There may be an easier way I don’t know. I nutted this out this afternoon. 1.Open Photoshop and set up your T-Shirt template to look like this. Make sure it’s set to transparent background. / 2. Select File>Place>choose the image you want to put into the template. / 3. A box will appear, like this one below, click okay. / 4. Your image will appear. Double click on the image to embed it. Select the magic wand tool and click on green background (your background-hopefully you have a one colour background). Marching ants should appear (doesn’t show here) around the image and canvas. / 5. Select the erase background tool in the tool bar. The marching ants are there to protect your image from accidently being erased. / 6. Start clicking around your image to remove background. You’ll have to zoom in and out to pick up any tiny bits that may be missed. To make your eraser brush smaller use the [ on your keyboard. To make it larger click the ] . / 7. Hopefully you’ll end up with something like this. If so save as a png file and it’s ready to upload to RB as a T-Shirt image!!! /
