  • Up from where Washington Street crosses Main in Lexington, cases are still held in the old courthouse. On the street nearby another court is held regularly by less noted judges. Their “bench” is a seat on a mildly raised wall between the oil stained street and a fiery nandina. Their docket is not posted and little note is taken by self-absorbed traffic of their deliberations. They are a part of the visibly latent people and their decisions remain among them. Watercolor 30×22” on handmade paper.

  • The scene is a small town in the mountains of Virginia, an area that has historically given a disproportionate sacrifice in the nation’s wars but suffers its share of the nation’s wealth. Bedford is nearby. It is the current time and there is a “Support Our Troops” sign taped in the window of a long closed business. December’s sun echos the contrasting theme in the strong lights and shadows thrown across flaking paint and rotting snow. An old man clearing the street speaks to youth’s absence from this scene. Yet it features endurance and hope also; life carries on. The building promises an occupant, as the sunlight and bare tree promise a spring and those at home do what they must and abide. 24×28” acrylic on linen covered wood.

  • How dynamic cultures survive amongst contemporary technology with it’s assimilating socio-economic values and religion.

  • Digital Montage / An original painting on canvas was photgraphed and worked in Photoshop with layers to place the figure on a construction site. / The Backlash in this case is about equal rights in the workplace. Some women in predominantly male vocations like the defence forces and on construction sites are having a rough time of it in Australia.

  • Movement of the Cobra / Digital Hybrid / This work was originally a mixed media paint and charcoal inspiration on paper. The image has been loaded into Photoshop and digitally enhanced and manipulated using the painting and blending tools and image adjustments. Work from my “Liberating the Angel” exhibition. / This image is about the co-dependent or dominant-submissive relationship where one person likes to control another. The power over partner has low self-esteem and is afraid to open the door on emotions, usually because huge pain has been locked away and submerged. The dominant partner therefore projects their emotions onto the submissive partner so they don’t have to deal with them. The submissive partner takes on these emotions so the power over partner can carry on. This weakens the submissive partner who then carries a double load of emotions. The power over partner convinces the submissive partner that their strengths are useless and their weaknesses are strengths, really screwing their mind and destroying in effect, the identity of the person. / In time, the submissive partner will need to move away and restore their stolen energies and begin to recover and heal. They will have been psychically battered from all the verbal games that did not and could not make sense, because it was never about love, it was only about rescue. They will also have to face the underlying reasons for choosing an abusive relationship. From pain and suffering comes growth and the test of that personal growth will be in not repeating the same choice of partner again. One thing LOVE is not…….is the power and control over another.

  • The original photograph from which this oil / painting was derived was taken along Main / Street in Nashua, New Hampshire (USA). / The photograph was unaltered and / captured a somewhat precarious glance / between the cafe patrons and a passer-by. / A Sunday afternoon in a small city in / New England. • Binge Drinking / Mixed media drawing on paper uploaded into Photoshop for formatting. I have used charcoal, conte and paint washes. To catch the raw dynamic and feel of intoxication I have used the basic stick figure. The faces have become masks to move the focus to the whole body experience of imbalance and loss of control. Binge drinking, a drink till you drop indulgence, is an unfortunate symptom of a very disturbed society. I was shocked to learn that two young people a week in Australia die from this social disease of excessive amounts of alcohol in a short period. The damage to the brain, liver and kidneys can only be imagined.

  • The Pack Charcoal, conte and paint washes on paper loaded into Photoshop and formatted. A work from an exhibition of works on paper entitled Behind the Mask. This is about the street scene and the companionship or ‘mateship’ of the pack. The male pack ignites the tough masculine bravado giving the individual a sense of power and control to the rebellious spirit of youth. An escape into chemical heaven relieves the pain of reality, of crushed ambitions and a feeling of uselessness. Our prisons are full of seemingly lost young males led along by the often dangerous pack mentality.

  • Original acrylic on stretched canvas (36 in. x 44 in.) Gary & I both collaborated on that incorporates both a micro- & macro- perspective on America’s eroding influence on the socio-political world scene. It’s an abstract based on Benjamin Franklin’s image on the U.S. $100 bill. The erosion suggests a post-American global economy reflecting the U.S.’s chaotic and crumbling financial state.
