this series of work is a preliminary set of charactor studies. / respect to the gifted few that so effortlessly say so much with the slightest of strokes. this is no.1 of 3.

  • Oil on linen paper from life

  • The pump engine house, at Friar’s Goose, on the river Tyne, in Gateshead, in the style of Thomas Hair, the industrial watercolourist of the 1830’s. The engine house, is now a ruin, on the reclaimed riverside park land, Felling, Gateshead. Bockingford watercolour paper, 22” x 14” 140lb.

  • This is the old Beamish wheel in County Durham, England. Painted in watercolour and pencil, in the style of Thomas Hair (1810 – 1875). / My hero from the 1830’s. He is unknown in his own town (Newcastle upon Tyne) and was buried in an unmarked grave, but his work was stunning. Finding artistic beauty, amongst the hellish conditions of industry, in the 1830’s! This is my latest (and my personal favourite) from my Thomas Hair series.

  • For the past week or so I have been in a real deep funk. Won’t go as far as saying depressed but overwhelmed by the feeling of unhappiness. I sketched this out last night about midnight and felt that it was worth throwing up here. I wanted to capture how I’ve been feeling and this happened to pop out. No preconceived idea of what I was aiming for and was at the will of my subconscious. As you see in the image, I am gripping onto one of the only things that make me happy, and no matter how hard I squeeze, it still feels like it is slipping away. What IT is, is not important, because it can be anything that brings you any kind of joy. And as you see, without that happiness and that “constant”, I am nothing. Along with my happiness I myself begin to slip away into the darkness, hoping to meet my happiness at the bottom.

  • / Here are My Ears Tshirt a pen illustration on brown paper over streaks of white gesso / with the addition of wire mesh on her little white tee / and a bit of fun in Photoshop

  • This is a painting by my friend, Maria Hawthorne. / Maria has been painting occcaisionally since childhood, but has not painted for many years. It was painted at my suggestion, from the book of old sailing ship photos, which I am currently working from. A drifter and topsail schooner, lie in the mud in old Whitby. / The ruins of the priory are on the distant hill Watercolour 12”x8”.

  • The wreck of the collier brig, the Harriet Wandle. Built in 1860 at Sunderland. / The victim of the cruel North Sea. I took the shipwreck details from an actual Victorian photo of the time. This took longer to paint and finish off, than all my other ship paintings put together! Sketched in pencil, and watercolour painted on drawing paper 120gsm. / Size 17”x11”.

  • Dunstanburgh castle, is a remote, ruined castle standing on the beautiful and rugged coast of Northumberland. Watercolour and pencil, 17” x 11”.

  • The view from the station platform was blurred by stately trees and regal rows of Victorian style lamp posts. A figure clutched at a corner of the building and imagined being at Disneyland. Yet that was as far as fantasy was allowed. Reality beckoned from the caboose of the train. And somehow as long as one stares at a departing train and wishes for its return, the more distant the sound of the click clack of the wheels becomes as if the repetitive sound were ripping a part of your heart out and pulling it along on the tracks behind like the tail of a kite. This sketch was created in India ink with oil pastels and acrylic paints added, then microwaved on high and then soaked in water to put out the fire.

  • As a child, I used to watch people, the animals, the sky, and all things around me. I used to wonder when I saw people fighting and arguing, why, they had to fight. Why couldn’t they talk things out and come to an agreement. Pretty adult thinking for a four to seven year old child. Now, I understand that more comes into play than just talking things out. Pride, envy, jealousy and even hatred. While we all live on the same planet, we are still worlds apart. Its very sad in a lot of ways. I think the child in me still wishes that people could come to agreement. The adult in me has to hug that child and let them know, it doesn’t always work out that way, but its good to have hope. :o) Created from a sketch of crystal paperweights reflected in a mirror, then painted in Photoshop. I used about 5 layers in this image.

  • We have all had days where the weather is miserable and we still had to be out in it. No matter if it’s rain or snow, the feeling is miserable. I saw this as a way to express an inner desire for some place warmer and sunnier. I did two of these, but decided this one was the most interesting. I will upload the other version later. This was created from a sketch based on a photograph I had seen several years ago that stuck with me. As I worked on it, I wanted the legs on the person walking to be a bit more surreal, so I moved the original legs to the reflection and the reflection of the legs to the body. Then, I used the area of reflections to add the little suns, clouds and blue skies. All done in Photoshop. This used about 5 layers and took about 2 hours. I hope you enjoyed my little experiment. :o) Featured in: / Escher and Perspective Art Dec 2009

  • Original oil painting by American artist Michael Creese.
