Completed 2004 age 18 I was inspired by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju, who tends to limit his colors in his paintings. Sometimes he paints an image where the background is the complimentary colors of the subject. His style is simple but at the same time intense, where the foreground stands out from the complimentary background. Medium: Watercolors This is a painting done in my sketchbook. The paper isn’t watercolor paper, but at least more durable than regular printing paper. This is an acrylic canvas painting 20” wide x 23” long of Australian Pelicans. Pelicans are beautiful large Black and White water birds. They have very long beaks that have a small hook on the end and a stretching pouch underneath. There are 7 species of Pelicans in the world. Pelicans fly just above the water’s surface in long lines and never dive. Growing up as a child I can remember my Grandfather singing to us…. “Oh a wonderous bird is the Pelican his beak holds more than his belican!” This was painted as a birthday present for a friend of mine who is turning 50 this weekend and her favourite bird is a Pelican. Seashells are wonders of the sea / Come let us look….take a walk with me / We will find the jewels, they are so grand / decorating the shores laying in the sand…. Impressionist, painterly / two boys doing what they do best in the rain. A loose, colourful, watercolour on Arches paper created from my imagination to brighten your day! Painted wet on wet and I let the colours do their own thing and then I shaped the painting. A magical place to visit when we dream. “Please come take my hand, / and walk beside me into my fantasy land”.... See the rainbow colours all around, / it is so peaceful here and the only sound / is water lapping gently, trees swaying in the breeze, / leave your worries behind for what you see will please. The very heart of your being / will not believe what you are seeing. / Your spirit will be lifted your soul will start singing, / it all makes sense now, life is for loving, sharing and giving. Linda Callaghan
A loose watercolour painting on Arches paper. Imagine an evening stroll along a hidden trail as the sun is setting throwing its warm glow across the shady trees… I did and this is what I created. Nothing like a glorious night to motivate one for a walk! The sky was alight to my delight / oh my look at those colours what a sight! / Let’s go for a stroll I said to my dog / the night is clear, no rain, no fog. The flowers were dancing their colours aglow / the tree branches swaying putting on a show / the night lit up we were bathed in light / Oh for sure this was a glorious night!
There are more than 6 billion human beings on Earth. According to the population estimates released by the United Nations, the 6 billion mark was reached on October 12 1999. Experimenting with watercolours today I created this loose one out of my imagination picturing a peaceful place full of colour and wonder. 10×12” watercolour on Arches paper. Twilight ‘Tis the light between day and night / the glow of the sky is such a sight. / The time in between hanging in the air / the rays of light proud in their glare. Loose wet in wet watercolour on Arches paper 8×10”. I dropped the colours where I wanted and shaped the painting. My main aim was to create a landscape out of my mind using brilliant colours. Sundown The day is over the air is still / the sun is setting over the hill. / Rainbow colours fill the land / Created by the sun’s hand. The light is slowly falling / and the night is softly calling. / The pallet of colours will surely fade / and soon all will be covered in shade. / A few leaves drifted down today, reminding me that fall is just around the corner…I was standing in the garden, looking up through the dappled leaves to the sky above, hardly able to see as the sun shone so brightly, thinking how fast summer goes and how long winter lasts…but leaves when they finally land, get trapped and become one with the soil that feeds my garden… / I am busy working on another portrait, but stopped to paint that vision of light that made a halo around the leaves as they fell…the view is as if you are underneath the leaves as they fall. Watercolour on Arches Not Paper FEATURED IN CREATIVE CARDS Leaves that fall are trapped in time / Beneath cold sheets of sand and lime. / Wandering there among the leaves, / In awe of variants Time conceived, / We ponder the shape of branching fates, / And elusive origins of their traits....excerpts David Maddison

This is my interpretation of the “Third Sorrow” of Ted Hughes “Seven Sorrows of Autumn”, which on the surface appears to be a sad poem but I think it’s really a paean to autumn....see the Fourth Sorrow below Watercolour on Watercolour on DrawMaster Paper The first sorrow of autumn / Is the slow goodbye / Of the garden who stands so long in the evening- / A brown poppy head, / The stalk of a lily, / And still cannot go. The second sorrow / Is the empty feet / Of a pheasant who hangs from a hook with his brothers. / The woodland of gold / Is folded in feathers / With its head in a bag. And the third sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the sun who has gathered the birds and who gathers / The minutes of evening, / The golden and holy / Ground of the picture. The fourth sorrow / Is the pond gone black / Ruined and sunken the city of water- / The beetle’s palace, / The catacombs / Of the dragonfly. And the fifth sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the woodland that quietly breaks up its camp. / One day it’s gone. / It has only left litter- / Firewood, tentpoles. And the sixth sorrow / Is the fox’s sorrow / The joy of the huntsman, the joy of the hounds, / The hooves that pound / Till earth closes her ear / To the fox’s prayer. And the seventh sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the face with its wrinkles that looks through the window / As the year packs up / Like a tatty fairground / That came for the children....Ted Hughes / The Fourth Sorrow
