A thousand Yellowstone wonders are calling, ‘Look up and down and round about you! John Muir – 1898 The temperatures were in the single digits on this cold, snowy January morning at West Thumb Geyser Basin, which is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone. A incredibly scenic area along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb only has a small amount of geyser activity. However, the basin more than makes up for it with its diversity. Despite its small size, it has paint/mud pots, hot springs, pools, lake shore geysers, and fumaroles. Fumaroles are small openings that release steam and other gasses. You can see in the foreground the muddy, soupy waters inundating the paint pots. The white area beyond the tree line in the right hand side of the photograph is Yellowstone Lake. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. • This little painting is the result of an oil sketch I did when I was in Katoomba recently. I love how when you drive or walk around Katoomba (or the other villages of the upper mountains) you often turn a corner or crest a hill and you find yourself confronted by the most spectacular view. There are a few spots which I really love. Whenever I was on my way to work (or whatever), these glimpses would energise me for the day ahead… reminding me of where we were… in a City within a World Heritage National Park. The way that civilisation exists along a narrow plateau which gives way to mountains and valleys also fascinates me. I often feel that Mother Nature is being incredibly generous in allowing our towns to flourish here… although she does remind us who’s boss occasionally…! This is the view across South Katoomba from the Mountain Heritage Carpark at the top of Lovel St Katoomba. Oil on Canvas / 40.5×30.5

  • I wanted to be out and as soon as I was I wanted to be in. The air was oppressive and still with silent heat and heavy glances and eyes that looked away to the hills, as mine did. There was a sinking white ball of light that is called the sun behind the gray hillside and the flour dusted buildings of the city. I turn and see tree bark glowing in the shadow and behind it a dozen people ducking and jolting along the path. Are the faces meant to be remembered or forgotten or are we all the same. Syrup of souls flowing into one another. / I reach the top and realize it isn’t a top at all. Looking down I feel the sharp shift of space grind to a halt for a second with my brain capturing one second of thick emotion to be cast off the hill yet remembered later. / Then gone and it is a day only a day only a night only a second only an eternity. Not lost, not forgotten, simply being here and now. Forgetting the future. / Late Afternoon is 15”x20” acrylic on paper
