I chose this painting to add the verse to for this challenge ( bible verses relating to Father) as it reminded me of the special times that I shared with my Father painting before he passed away. This is a watercolour painting from a photo that I took while we were traveling along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria Australia. / This Rock formation is called The London Bridge, which is found along the south coast of Australia. The 2 Rock formations use to be joined forming a bridge-like structure ( hence where the name came from). But one day after years of erosion the middle section collapsed stranding a group of tourists on the outer section.

I walked by this house and instantly grabbed my camera / Seeing this colorful composition made me think of a painting / / You know these abstract paintings that are made with just “rectangles” of similar colors? The ones you can see different things in? / Well I thought: why not the other way around? / / Padova, Italy
So typical of small Tuscan villages, the laundry drying on the line was something I just had to try to capture in watercolor when I returned home.
One of my earlier watercolor paintings done from a photo I took while visiting the beautiful Greek Isles several years ago.

Holiday… in Berlin Spandau (Germany)...
This is one of my favourites. It is actually my two eldest daughters playing together when they were much younger than they are now. We were enjoying a family holiday at the beach. The original hangs on the wall in our home, but so many have commented on it we thought we had better share it. The original has been done with a pallet knife for texture. / Sue. The Sculptures are located on a hill over looking Broken Hill in the Living Desert Reserve. They make an excellent subject and have been photographed and painted by many. I decided to get in on the act. If you are ever visiting Broken Hill it is worth the 8 km drive to the Sculptures – especially at Sunset, or if your really keen, sunrise. / yawn, Sue For Sue Hodge originals visit: www.suehodge.com.au / For more prints by Sue Hodge visit: http://ochresands.redbubble.com

I enjoyed many films during my childhood in this art deco building. Glad to see it enjoying a revival. / / SUN PICTURE THEATRE For Yvonne, Michelle and Margot / The world is revolving faster these days / How did it happen that twenty-four hours / Now seem like eighteen…or less? Back then / The Sun sign flickered day and night / Above the picture theatre, when we jumped / Off the Spotswood bus at Yarraville Station, / To ride the railway gates with the men / And boys, while the women stood back / They swung open like welcoming arms / Scooping us into the land of reel to reel Streamers propelled by light. In the Art Deco / Building with a half sun on top, glowing / Like an icon or cross on a church / Rising up over the sugar refinery, docks / And our real lives we never thought about / While we were in Hollywood, America / The good old U S of A in Australia singing God Save the Queen, while we stood head / To shoulder with women and men dressed in suits / And the other kids who knew all the words / To an anthem sung into our colonial heads / At school and on TV without needing a script / Or subtitles on the bottom of the screen / With a bouncing ball swooping over lyrics. At the matinee we sighed when the lights were dimmed / Slipping down into our seats and out of our bodies / Onto the screen where film goddesses always ended up / With impossible heroes we read about on Fantales wrappers / While we crunched through to chocolate inside vermillion / Jaffas and licked wafered vanilla icecreams. Chilled when the lights went out once upon a time / And the curtains opened to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho / Mother told me to cover my eyes while / She held my ears and screamed so loudly / A rush of shivers snap froze the audience / To their seats. Black and white or / Technicolor…she liked a good murder. While her daughters plagiarised musicals / To re-enact on the front verandah for kids / Who lived on the Avenue. Costumes, makeup, / Some lousy script of song and dance everyone / Sat through and wanted more of every Saturday / After Mum had said: ‘Let’s go to the flicks’ / And we came home from that dreaming place Where the Sun is now derelict and only lights / Up for vandals, who make fires in the dress / Circle, front and back stalls, turning the floors / And ceiling into charcoal as delicate as Violet Crumble. My Husband recently told the story below at a wedding. He was the speaker – what do you think he said after this to give the newly weds guidance? I must admit I was worried – but he did well making much of the story to illustrate the need for realistic expectations and hope. Want to know how he did this? You will have to ask him. My response was to paint this – and so its called “That’s Once!” Have you heard the one about the newly weds? / After the festivities they left for their honeymoon. / This was in the days when the common form of transport was horse and cart. / What is going on within their minds? The groom . . . we won’t focus on what was going on in his mind, but the bride was thinking how perfect it was. / She couldn’t help smiling at her husband with joyful expectations of what the years ahead of them would bring. / As the horse steadily plodded along the cart was creaking as the wheels rolled along the dusty track. / Suddenly the horse stopped, lowered its head and began to eat some lush grass growing on the track. The groom flicked the reins with a “giddy-up!” The horse did not respond. / He climbed down from the cart, and went and addressed the horse. He raises his finger and Firmly says: “that’s once.” / As he climbed backup into the cart his bride was smiling admiringly at him, thinking: “I love a man who knows his mind and is firm and yet patient. He will be so good with children.” The groom takes the reins and with a flick they are on the move again. / Ten minutes later the horse stops for another snack. The groom repeats the ritual, getting down from the cart and addressing the horse, he raises his finger and firmly says: “That’s twice!” / A warm sensation floods the bride’s whole being as she is drawn to this man who exhibits such steadiness, consistency, stability and self control. Again, with a flick of the reins they are off. She slides closer to her man and places her head affectionately upon his shoulder. Just as her mind wonders into daydreams of a little house, with a veranda, a garden, children playing and her man coming through the gate after a hard days work, the horse stops for yet another snack. / Without hesitation, the groom jumps from the cart, but this time goes to the rear of the cart and appears to be getting something, perhaps a whip? / But when he approaches the horse to address it he has a shot gun in his hands. Firmly he says: “That’s three times!”, points the gun and Bang! Shoots the horse dead. / The Bride sits there stunned and can hardly believe what has just happened. As her husband climbs back onto the cart, she exclaims in a tense panicked voice: / “What did you do that for?! / You didn’t have to shoot it!!! / What are we going to do now?” / The groom turns to her, raises his finger and says firmly: / “That’s Once.”

Ungwa/Fada Village, remote Nigeria. I knocked on the door of a precious Grandmother who I met while ministering t=in the village last December 2007, expecting her to be in, but instead it was little Alice who opened the door. When she saw me, she was so surprised and stood looking at me without any words. The rest of the Mission team burst out laughing and one elder rolled on the ground with uncontrollable giggles. Eventually Alice produced a smile, but would not move. I love this shot as it made us all laugh in what was a very difficult day emotionally as we did what we could to help the extreme poor and sick in this isolated village. / Alice is one of three orphans cared for by her Grandmother. Nobody in the village knew his name or where he came from. Abandoned and very sick, he came slowly to us and just sat down at my feet. My deep passion to help those who are very much less fortunate that we are burn every second of each day. I am deeply Inspired By the suffering and desperate struggle of these often abandoned children, to reach out even more to help them in their hour of need. Its not what we take with us when we die, as we shall take no wealth or materials with us. it is what we can leave behind that really matters to God. To leave clean water wells, the ability to grow good quality food, Medical care is what really motivates me. I am sorry that I seem to upload hard sometimes unpleasant images on my site, but I cannot hide the real truth about the suffering in extreme and isolated areas of remote Africa. You won’t see images of this type on Safari brochures or tourist holiday websites. Yet children like this little boy suffer so much. We can together help many children like this precious child. Philadelphia Mission [Reg No: 1049410] is a British charity working with extreme poor in isolated and rural villages in Africa. We are ALL unpaid volunteers and we with a few friends cover all charity overheads and expenses, which are small. ALL DONATIONS WE RECEIVE GOES TOWARD THESE PRECIOUS PEOPLE. / ‘Is there anybody there?’ said the Traveller, / Knocking on the moonlit door; / And his horse in the silence champed the grasses / Of the forest’s ferny floor: / And a bird flew up out of the turret, / Above the Traveller’s head / And he smote upon the door again a second time; / ‘Is there anybody there?’ he said. / But no one descended to the Traveller; / No head from the leaf-fringed sill / Leaned over and looked into his grey eyes, / Where he stood perplexed and still. / But only a host of phantom listeners / That dwelt in the lone house then / Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight / To that voice from the world of men: / Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair, / That goes down to the empty hall, / Hearkening in an air stirred and shaken / By the lonely Traveller’s call. / And he felt in his heart their strangeness, / Their stillness answering his cry, / While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf, / ‘Neath the starred and leafy sky; / For he suddenly smote on the door, even / Louder, and lifted his head:- / ‘Tell them I came, and no one answered, / That I kept my word,’ he said. / Never the least stir made the listeners, / Though every word he spake / Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house / From the one man left awake: / Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup, / And the sound of iron on stone, / And how the silence surged softly backward, / When the plunging hoofs were gone....Walter De La Mare The above poem is another of my favourites…I read it over and over again, picturing the dark night, the traveller knocking at the old door in the moonlight, and no answer but the echoes of spectral ghosts on the stairway inside… / There have been many different interpretations of this poem, (I have copied one below), but I think that if we chose a literal interpretation, it seems like it’s the middle of war and the traveller is bringing a message, but he is too late…they have all gone or are dead… / I chose to paint it as a semi abstract, painting a vignette of the door panels with three large iron rivets, (a triangle) to give a sense of massiveness, of a fortress or citadel, with just the glow of the moonlight in the centre, all the rest fading away into blurred ochres and siennas…to avoid being literal, I did not include a knocker…he would have used a staff or stick anyway... Watercolour and Acrylic on Saunders Waterford Rough Paper.. Below is one of the theories about the poem… The theme of the poem is the place of man in a universe which is far greater than he, and which he can neither connect with nor understand. It focuses on man’s state of isolation and disharmony with the natural world. Nature, as represented by the horse placidly munching on the grass and the bird frightened by the man’s disturbing clamor, is normally serene – it is only man who is anxious because of his separateness. The traveler tries to overcome his aloneness and establish meaning by fruitless seeking (knocking) and responsible living (keeping promises), but the natural world remains unyielding in keeping its distance, and the traveler continues on alone. PLEASE READ THIS. / Taken in Ungwa/fada village, in remote Nigeria. This was not staged for a photographs, I wasa walking around the remmote village early in the morning and saw this beautiful child praying. These villagers are extremely poor, and many are sick. Their well has caved in and Rickets is rampant here. No hospitals, or school within easy reach, and there is no main roads for 30 miles. We are helping as many as we can. My Passion and calling in life is to do more than just Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to these poor people, but to with your help and Gods increase meet their needs and help them live better lives. This is my attempt to add something different to the original. I am very new to Paintshop pro and copy and pasting images into other Photographs.
