“Winter in the North” is part of the Landscape Collection and it’s the north of Ontario on the Manitoba border... pulled from my portfolio and posted for this weeks Scavenger Hunt .. Watercolour on Arches Not Paper… PORTRAIT IN BLACK AND WHITE A grand clutter of magpies / in judges’ robes flutters to fill / the bone-bare branches / of winter trees. They stare / at me, then burst into mad / cackles of raucous laughter. / What, I ask them, is the joke? / The heavy load of winter snow / that slid sharply off the roof, / just missing me? The small cat / dashing by with piteous mews / to disappear into an open door? / The magpies do not answer. / Again in unison, they abruptly / cease their clatter to fly away, / bright plumage shining black / and white in icy winter light. The High Level Bridge in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada spanning across the North Saskatewan River in the winter of 2008. Originally shot in color then converted to black and white. I applied a slight Orton effect after pushing the raw settings to expose a little more of the dynamic range.

A cold winters day scenery through a frosted window at dusk, this artwork was done in PS.

This is a pencil drawing in which an artist paints upon a wooden plaque a winter scene visible through the window. The strange twist to this picture is that the plaque in the scene is one I have actually painted an while it exist in reality, the world outside the window is in fact entirely from my imagination. The title is an intentional play on words. “Winter scene through the glass” can be interpreted as “Winter seen through the looking glass”. This picture is as much a statement upon what is reality as it is a still life scene.

Mouthstick painting by Lori Konkle / watercolor on watercolor paper / the original is 17”x13” Lori was along time survivor of multiple sclerosis. She painted using a mouthstick to hold the brush in her mouth. She painted 570 mouthstick watercolors. Lori donated all the proceeds of the sale of her paintings to charity.
