  • This is an oil painting I did the day of my wedding. It was a class I was taking and the instructor knew I was getting married that afternoon. So he had the class paint as fast as they could, he said it will come out better then spending a lot of time on it. Well, he was right! All the paintings in the class turned out so beautiful and it took us 2 hours and I was off at noon to get ready for my wedding. This was the happiest day of my life! We were married in the little church in the Garden of the Gods. The most beautiful place on the earth. When I brought my painting home my husband was amazed and loved the picture. To this day we cherish this picture the most. It was in July and the flowers were blooming and there in the back drop was Pikes Peak covered with snow. A day of beauty, with love in our hearts, no wonder this painting turned out so good. This original picture is not available for sale. You can also visit my website: www.RedfishArtwork.com

  • The main stencil image is one layer of the four layer stencil I created in early 2008 inspired by my interest in fashion photography. ‘Snow and Umbrella’ is 1 of 3, utilising the same same stencil and composition of works I’ve posted on Red Bubble at the moment. The other is ‘Rain Birds’ and ‘Umbrella and Rain’.

  • / “After the Storm” is part of the Winter Collection....It is from my Archives, and it’s the first watercolour I ever painted....it was painted in 1993…I found the image in a long out of print instruction book on watercolours…it is a picture of snow fall in Northern Ontario, with which I am very familiar, since I lived in the area for many years..although I have had many offers, I never wanted to sell it due to it’s associations. / See others from the current winter Collection below... Watercolour on Arches Paper… 334 Views First snow, that cold, white, winding sheet, lies stretched o’er all the ground, / It shrouds the world, and all that’s in it, while winter doth abound. / Death mask adorned, winter’s partial span will grow to join together, / Both autumn’s death and springs rebirth, thus life rolls on as ever...Matsuo Basho / / /

Sadness is but a part of it all, / Coming so relentlessly in the morning, / The offscouring of dreams. / Why do you run? / The Birch tree does not run. / Stripped of his leaves by the cold winds, / Waiting silently all winter, / Without complaint. / Standing deep in the snow, / Without motion. / He knows the cold will go away, / That the sun will warm the grass green, / And give back his leaves, / And lure back his birds. / He knows that only fools are not sad. • The weather for this years Winter Magic Festival was a bit of everything. But even though there was rain and fog and it was cold… it didn’t stop the crowds from enjoying themselves! Late in the afternoon the mist started to roll in and it was getting dark.. a few storeholders were starting to pack up but the street was still full of people. I took a photo at the time because I really liked the atmosphere and then when I had my week away recently, I let myself start to play with it! This is the result so far… I think I would like to try a few other ideas too… : )) Mixed Media on canvas paper. / 40.5×60

  • This is the 3rd installment of my seasons series, it took me some time to get down the mood for this one.

  • In my yard late winter 09’ playing in the puddles, enjoying life~ / / Canada Goose Facts / • Life expectancy about 20 years / • Weight: 20-25 pounds / • Migration is a learned process / • Migratory geese flight range 2 – 3 thousand miles / • Resident geese flight range: 100 –200 miles to find food, water, and safety. / • Resident geese can fly long distances as their migratory cousins, but generally have learned that it is not necessary. / • Migratory geese do not become resident geese unless they are injured. / • Mating season: February to March / • Geese mate for life and will stay together during all seasons. / • Geese will find a new mate if mate dies or is killed. / • Migratory geese nest in Canada. / • Geese nesting in the U.S. are “resident” geese who were born here. / • Resident geese were imported to the area for rebuilding dwindling numbers for conservation or hunting. The urban nuisance was not anticipated. / • Nesting Season: Mid March to mid May / • Age of geese when they begin to nest: 3 years / • Geese return to the general area of their birth each year to mate and nest. Sometimes the exact site, sometimes a nearby pond or other body of water. / • The instinct to return to their general area or birth is very strong. / • Migratory geese fly 2,000–3,000 miles to return to these sites. / • Resident geese do not know how to migrate. / • When geese are chased from their traditional nesting area or the nesting area has too many nesting pairs, they find alternative sites to nest … sometimes farther from water, sometimes in nearby ponds, sometimes on rooftops or balconies. They will hide their nests. / • Geese prefer isolated sites near water to nest. Islands are their favorite location. / • Nests are usually on the ground, in the open. / • Sometimes geese nest in brushy or swampy areas not subject to flooding. / • When egg laying begins the “Father” goose will stand sentinel watch nearby, but not so close as to give away location of nest to a predator. When a solitary goose is seen during nesting season a nest is somewhere in the vicinity. / • The eggs in a nest are called a “clutch” / • Average number of eggs in a nest: 5 / • Mother goose lays 1 egg approximately 1_ days apart until full clutch is obtained. / • Eggs not being incubated are cool to the touch. / • Mother goose waits until all eggs are laid before she begins to sit on nest to incubate eggs / • Incubation time: 28 – 30 days / • Undeveloped eggs (still fluid) will sink or float vertically with the wider portion of the egg pointing down. / • Developed eggs will float horizontally or at a slight angle and break the surface of the water. At that point they are one to two weeks away from hatching. / • All geese eggs in a single clutch hatch on approximately the same day / • Baby geese are called “goslings”. / • Natural predators of geese are foxes, raccoons, owls and snapping turtles / • Goslings can fly approximately 2-3 months after hatching. / • During June adult geese lose wing feathers and are unable to fly. This is called molting. / • Molting season runs from early June to late July. / • Geese can fly again approximately 6 weeks after molting. / • Generally by early August all geese (except injured geese) are able to fly. / • During the molt geese need to be near water (any water) for easy escape from predators. The molting area needs an easily accessible food supply. /

  • Best viewed larger Featured in Snow Glorious Snow October 19, 2009. An adorable little Black Capped Chickadee perched on my deck railing, braving the snow and ice on a February afternoon in 2008. I named this image in honor of my friend, Renee Dawson who loves Black capped Chickadees dearly, and who also coined the phrase. Her chickadee images are beyond compare!!! I just thought this little guy looked a bit “kerflustered” on this cold winter’s day!! Image taken with the Nikon D40x and the 55-200mm vr Nikon lens at 190mm focal length. Shutter 1/320, aperture f/5.6, exp. 0.00, iso 800. I hand-painted the entire bird in Corel Paint 11 and created and added the snow layer in Photoshop. Texture layer from Skeletal Mess at Deviant Art added in Photoshop. The following information is from What Bird.com Overview / Black-capped Chickadee: Medium-sized, stocky chickadee with pale gray upperparts and breast and pale olive-brown underparts. The black cap and bib and white cheeks are conspicuous. Black bill is short and thin. Wings are dark with broad white edges on feathers. State bird of Maine and Massachusetts. / INTERESTING FACTS / The song of the Black-capped Chickadee is one of the most complex vocalizations of all animals, acting as a contact call, an alarm call, to identify an individual, or to indicate recognition of a particular flock. / They may cache food in hundreds of different sites, recalling those locations and retrieving food up to 28 days later. / It is the state bird of Maine and Massachusetts. / A group of chickadees are collectively known as a “banditry” and a “dissimulation” of chickadees.

  • “Beautyberry” is part of the Winter collection…”Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii, Beautyberry is a gorgeous shrub that can grow to 10 ft. tall…it’s has lovely flowers in late summer, but in the autumn incredible jewel like amethyst coloured berries appear, that stay on till winter finally sets in…I plant lots of dfferent shrubs with berries in my garden so there is always a show even when the all the leaves are gone.. / I added touches of frost to the leaves, which often happens in late fall Watercolour on Fabriano Not Paper See more of the Winter/Christmas Collection / HERE

  • EDT…it’s the edge of winter…snow, wet, dark, light, night, day…a time when S.A.D is pre-eminent…it takes time to adjust, and some wait in limbo for EDT in March, but some embrace the changes…I don’t like the dark that sets in so early, so I have daylight bulbs in all my lamps…six weeks from now it’s the solstice and we start looking forward to lighter days Thomas Hood expresses it beautifully for us Watercolour on Sennelier Not Paper CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ENTIRE WINTER COLLECTION No sun-no moon! / No morn-no noon! / No dawn-no dusk-no proper time of day- / No sky-no earthly view— / No distance looking blue .. • “Spellbound” is part of the Winter and Portrait Collection…the painting captures the feeling of submitting ones own will to the tyrannical demands of the storm….my portrayal is one of a goddess of winter…with the red berries in her hair, she embodies its stillness, its sense of silence, darkness, and bitter cold..the falling snow is a “poem of the air,” wrote Longfellow, where the “troubled sky reveals the grief it feels.” / Winter is a time to concentrate on renewing and affirming human relationships. Watercolour on Arches Not Paper… Featured in Out of The Blue Views..134 VIEW THE ENTIRE WINTER COLLECTION HERE The night is darkening round me, / The wild winds coldly blow; / But a tyrant spell has bound me / And I cannot, cannot go. • As I was painting this abstract, I pondered the many meanings to the word “approach”...for example there is…. / The simple act of drawing near…. / A way, passage, or avenue by which a place or buildings can be approached; an access. / The temporal property of becoming nearer in time..e.g. “the approach of winter” / The final path followed by an aircraft as it is landing… / My painting is mainly concerned with the last two…I wanted to evoke both meanings of the word…it is the final curtain of autumn and winter is fast approaching..pockets of red and orange gleam here and there, as autumn stubbornly defies the chill, but at night the icy fingers of winter touches everything with frost..in the countryside snow drifts casually down, as if refusing to admit it’s here for good…another look at the painting evokes the final approach to land…stars twinkle in the night sky, the land shows the last vestiges of fall and the approach of winter….we are excited, relieved to have made it home safely once more... Watercolour on Aquaboard The half-stripped trees / struck by a wind together, / bending all, / the leaves flutter drily / and refuse to let go / or driven like hail / stream bitterly out to one side / and fall / where the salvias, hard carmine— / like no leaf that ever was— / edge the bare garden. • “Lost” continues the story of four friends who set out for a Christmas weekend in the country…in the first chapter, seen HERE the friends’ day starts out joyfully, but soon deteriorates along with the weather, and they quickly become lost... Watercolour on Saunders Not Paper A moment or two of stunned silence, as it slowly dawned on us that we had no idea where we were…it was the days before Mapquest and GPS and cell phones…we-were-lost…the day was getting rapidly darker as the last of the pallid sun sank behind the hills…Dahlia started to whimper and Mark, never at his best in a crisis told her to shut up, at which she burst into tears…there was no help for it…we would have to get out and walk until we found shelter somewhere…at this suggestion Dahlia’s whimpers turned into yells…she had no boots, only thin shoes suitable for city streets…hearing this Mark completely lost his temper….Dahlia always drove him mad…one wonders why he repeatedly sought her out…after calming them both down I said I felt sure (not really), that the area looked somewhat familiar and there would be a farm or something nearby…after some argument, and taking as much as we could carry, we set off, Dahlia wearing a pair of Tom’s boots which were too large for her, all the while sobbing that we should stay with the car… / The road stretched ahead, bleak and desolate, here and there patches of gleaming ice set to trap the unwary traveller, hill upon hill rising behind…a rocky terrain that did not bode well for anyone trying to negotiate it…not a creature stirred and no bird sang…the wind blew stinging ice pellets at our faces, and in no time our gloves and feet were soaked…but there were ancient dry stone walls edging the road..a sign that somewhere nearby would be shelter…..we turned a corner…”.LOOK” I cried..Janis Z..Fiction..A Weekend in the Country..Ch.2 Lost.. / A Weekend in the Country

  • “The Grove” continues the story of four friends who set out for a Christmas weekend in the country…in the first chapter, seen HERE the friends’ day starts out joyfully, but soon deteriorates along with the weather, and they quickly become lost…in the second chapter seen HERE they decide to walk to their destination, but without any idea how to get there... Watercolour on Saunders Not Paper Look” I cried, but my cry fell on deaf ears…Dahlia, who had still been sobbing that we should stay with the car, terrified that she would fall, stumbled and actually fell, and before we knew it slid rapidly into one of the ditches that hidden by snow, lined the roadway…how to get her out without their falling on the treacherous ice, elicited a heated argument between Tom and Mark, Dahlia screaming and thrashing about all the while…finally by Tom yelling that “the more she moved the deeper she sank”, Dahlia got the message and the two men by lying prone on the icy lane, managed to drag her out dripping wet, but… without the boots…it was quickly apparent we would never get them back…no one could possibly reach down to try and find them…we dried her off as best we could, wrapped her in one of the blankets we had luckily brought with us and the two men elected to carry her in turn on their backs…that meant our progress was slower than ever…worse yet, the only torch we had was now flickering badly…to save the battery I turned it off, hoping that we would be guided by the light of the waning moon…... / Suddenly I remembered what I had seen…I turned back excitedly…”Look there”...I pointed to a spot ahead of us…I had seen what looked like a small sheltered grove, but what had really astonished me was the light…blazing brilliant light pouring down through the trees as if from the skies…”Look where? asked Tom…”There” I replied…then stopped silent…my hand dropped to my side…the light had gone…there was nothing there….only impenetrable darkness stared back at us... / Lost / A Weekend in the Country

  • It’s the first day of winter in Canada, and though we have no snow here in Toronto, Ontario, just north of us it is very deep and very cold…it’s unusual that in the city there is none….I’m not complaining, I love that it’s still fairly warm and dry, so this painting is from remembered first days in the past...a few samples from the Winter series can be seen below Watermedia on Arches Paper “On the first day of winter, / the earth awakens to the cold touch of itself. / Snow knows no other recourse except / this falling, this sudden letting go / over the small gnomed bushes, all the emptying trees. / Snow puts beauty back into the withered and malnourished, / into the death-wish of nature and the deliberate way / winter insists on nothing less than deference. / waiting all its life, snow says, “Let me cover you” Laura Lush, The First Day of Winter / Grateful / The Sentinels / Winter’s Light / Birchwood / Effet de Neige
