Winter Sky

The original artwork is done in acrylic on stretched canvas. This was painted on a cold windy winter night a few years ago, and I wanted to paint something that will warm me up. What better way than a nice cosy blanket with swirls and colours! Enjoy!

There has been one sale of this image. In November 2008 this image was featured in the group, Buyers R Us. In February 2009, this image placed third in the U.S. Parks Wildlife Shots challenge hosted by the AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat group. A thousand Yellowstone wonders are calling, ‘Look up and down and round about you! John Muir – 1898 The temperatures were in the single digits on this cold, snowy January morning at West Thumb Geyser Basin, which is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone. A incredibly scenic area along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb only has a small amount of geyser activity. However, the basin more than makes up for it with its diversity. Despite its small size, it has paint/mud pots, hot springs, pools, lake shore geysers, and fumaroles. Fumaroles are small openings that release steam and other gasses. You can see in the foreground the muddy, soupy waters inundating the paint pots. The white area beyond the tree line in the right hand side of the photograph is Yellowstone Lake. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. / The Nothing That Is” is part of the Winter collection…this is a complicated thought…Winter is indeed something, as we know here in the North…most people would say that Winter is white, but in the city we have the reflections of all the colour in the buildings and lights that the snow reflects…but most of all the joys of winter, I think, should be portrayed in brilliant colour…the stark white of the birches pop against the blues and purples, and there is a little green and gold to remind us that the earth is still alive underneath. / In the face of all that winter is, Man himself becomes “Nothing” and “Beholds Nothing that is not there, and sees the Nothing that is”... Best viewed larger An adorable little Black Capped Chickadee perched on my deck railing, braving the snow and ice on a February afternoon in 2008. I named this image in honor of my friend, Renee Dawson who loves Black capped Chickadees dearly, and who also coined the phrase. Her chickadee images are beyond compare!!! I just thought this little guy looked a bit “kerflustered” on this cold winter’s day!! Image taken with the Nikon D40x and the 55-200mm vr Nikon lens at 190mm focal length. Shutter 1/320, aperture f/5.6, exp. 0.00, iso 800. I hand-painted the entire bird in Corel Paint 11 and created and added the snow layer in Photoshop. Texture layer from Skeletal Mess at Deviant Art added in Photoshop. The following information is from What Bird.com Overview / Black-capped Chickadee: Medium-sized, stocky chickadee with pale gray upperparts and breast and pale olive-brown underparts. The black cap and bib and white cheeks are conspicuous. Black bill is short and thin. Wings are dark with broad white edges on feathers. State bird of Maine and Massachusetts. / INTERESTING FACTS / The song of the Black-capped Chickadee is one of the most complex vocalizations of all animals, acting as a contact call, an alarm call, to identify an individual, or to indicate recognition of a particular flock. / They may cache food in hundreds of different sites, recalling those locations and retrieving food up to 28 days later. / It is the state bird of Maine and Massachusetts. / A group of chickadees are collectively known as a “banditry” and a “dissimulation” of chickadees.
